Rituals

Rituals are the lifeblood of Khorvaire, industrializing magic into standardized forms. For the players, rituals are "out of combat" magic that can be used to solve otherwise difficult problems.

How Rituals Work

Ritual Access

Casting rituals is governed by the Arcana skill. Some classes are automatically trained in Arcana, others have it on their skill list, while most don't have access to it. The Skill Training feat can give access to the Arcana skill to cast rituals, while the Training downtime activity can also unlock ritual casting.

Categories of Rituals

All rituals fall into one of the following categories

Abjuration: Abjuration rituals create wards and glyphs to discourage or prevent creatures from taking certain actions. Protection rituals use Khyber dragonshards for their component cost.

Accommodation: Accommodation rituals provide food, shelter, water, and various creature comforts to their users. Accommodation rituals use Eberron dragonshards for their component cost.

Communication: Communication rituals allow the communication over great distances and bridge the gap between sentient races. Communication rituals use Siberys dragonshards for their component cost.

Creation: Creation rituals build, repair, and summon permanent objects. Creation rituals use Eberron dragonshards for their component cost.

Deception: Deception rituals conceal or disguise people, objects, and areas. Deception rituals use Khyber dragonshards for their component cost.

Divination: Divination rituals discover information and pierce illusions. Divination rituals use Siberys dragonshards for their component cost.

Environment: Environment rituals interact with and control the natural world. Environment rituals use Eberron dragonshards for their component cost.

Restoration: Restoration rituals remove diseases and curses, raise the dead, and enhance the use of medicine. Restoration rituals use Siberys dragonshards for their component cost.

Travel: Travel rituals move people and things from one location to another. Travel rituals use Eberron dragonshards for their component cost.

Casting a Ritual

To cast a ritual, you first need dragonshards of a type appropriate to the category of ritual and of sufficient quantity or size to meet the component cost requirements. Half are consumed when you start the ritual, and half are consumed when the ritual is successfully completed.

While you cast a ritual you must remain mostly stationary for the entire casting duration. You can cast a ritual while riding on a mount or vehicle, however this will not work for certain rituals that affect an area. For those rituals you will need to stay in the area affected for the entire cast time.

If you are attacked and take damage while casting a ritual you must make an endurance check with DC equal to 10 + half the damage taken. If you fail, the ritual is disrupted. The ritual is also disrupted if you are dazed, stunned, subject to forced movement, or knocked prone.

At the completion of the ritual, make an Arcana check. This will be used in the results of the ritual as proscribed by the ritual text.

Ritual Books and Ritual Access

Casting a ritual also requires the ritual written out either in a ritual book or on a scroll. Scrolls let you cast rituals in half the time, but use up the magic imbued into the scroll with its creation. Characters trained in Arcana at character creation start with three rituals in their ritual book.

Adding a ritual to a ritual book from either another ritual book or a scroll requires a downtime. Most rituals can be bought for their market price, although finding where they can be bought depends on the level of the ritual. Any ritual of fifth level or lower can be found in Khorvaire, and a select few higher level rituals can be found in the most prestigious of academies and institutes, but generally for higher level rituals you will have to look beyond the five nations.

Dragonmarks and Arcana Training

Each dragonmark gives the ability to cast a ritual without paying its component cost. Dragonmarked characters are unique in their ability to make an Arcana check untrained for any rituals they have access to. Arcana training still works with their free ritual, representing how training can hone a mark.

Level 1

Amanuensis

With a little bit of magic you transfer the contents of a book or other piece of writing into a new book

You completely and perfectly copy the writing in a book or other text onto new paper. If the original book was magical, the magic on the book is not copied. If this ritual is interrupted, unlike other rituals you get a partial effect of transcribing a percentage of the text equal to how much time you had spent casting the ritual. However, you also expend all of the component cost at the start of casting this ritual rather than just half.

Animal Messenger

You whisper a quick message to a nearby friend

When beginning the ritual, choose a nearby animal that is not hostile to you. The animal approaches you, and you may give it a message up to 25 words in length.

The animal will travel a maximum distance based on your Arcana check to a target you specify. You must physically describe the target, so you can say "Give this message to one of the royal guards, whom wear heavy armor and have this specific emblem" or you can give an exact description of an ally. The animal will then travel as quickly as possible to deliver your message to the target. If the animal does not make it to the target you are notified when it is stopped.

Clean

A spell to make Cinderella jealous

This ritual completely cleans the contents of a room, dusting, polishing, and sweeping everything to "Grandma Standard". However, it won't rearrange furniture or make any other decisions related to arrangement that would actually make her happy.

Comprehend Languages

As you finish the ritual, the guttural language of the creatures before you clarifies into something you understand.

When beginning the ritual, choose a language you have heard or a piece of writing you have seen within the past 24 hours.

Using this ritual on a language you have heard allows you to understand it when spoken for the next 24 hours and, if your Arcana check result is 18 or higher, to speak the language fluently for the duration.

Using this ritual on a language you have seen as a piece of writing allows you to read the language for the next 24 hours and, if your Arcana check result is 18 or higher, to write the language in its native script or in any other script you know for the duration.

Using this ritual on a language you have both heard and seen as a piece of writing within the past 24 hours allows you to understand it in both forms for the next 24 hours, and an Arcana check result of 18 or higher allows you to speak and write the language.

Detect Plants and Animals

As you complete the ritual your awareness grows, and you can feel the life force of non-sapient creatures around you.

When you cast the ritual, specify a particular kind of animal or plant. Until the end of the duration, you can detect whether that particular kind of animal or plant is within a 5 times your Arcana check feet of you. Furthermore, you get a "getting warmer" or "getting colder" feeling for the nearest specimen of that plant or animal.

As a standard action you may change what kind of animal or plant the ritual detects.

Ethereal Mount

An ethereal steed gallops into view, called by your ritual

When you finish casting the ritual, you summon a Riding Horse that is absolutely loyal to you. This horse cannot attack, has hit points equal to 20 + 10 x your level, and has your defenses. The horse has a speed of 40'

Eyes of Alarm

You conjure forth a phantasmal sentry—a slender pillar 6 feet tall, topped with a floating, unblinking eye. The eye watches over your camp as you sleep and cries out an alert if danger approaches.

This ritual creates watchful eyes that you place in any space within 50 feet of where you perform the ritual. Each eye is located in a particular square; it is intangible and can’t be interacted with physically. The eyes are nearly invisible and have a Stealth check result of 20 + your level to avoid detection.

Your Arcana check determines how many eyes you can place and what type of vision or sensory ability they possess.

The eyes do not hear, but they see well. Each uses your Perception modifier, with a +5 bonus.

If an eye sees an intruder, it emits a loud warning sound defined by you during the ritual. This sound could be anything from a stentorian “Enemies approach!” to an owl’s screech to a fanfare of trumpets. The Perception DC to hear the eye’s sound is 0 (modified by distance as normal).

The eyes never consider you an intruder. In addition, you can designate any number of other ritual participants as nonintruders. When you perform the ritual, you can also designate one or more categories of creatures that the eyes will ignore. You can define these categories by obvious physical characteristics (such as height, weight, or body shape), creature type (such as humanoid), creature race (such as hill giant), or obvious equipment (such as a creature carrying a shield with a flame emblazoned upon it).

The ritual’s effects last for 24 hours or until you move more than 20 squares from all the eyes.

Optional Focus: You can extend the duration of this ritual indefinitely by using a focus of a small, jeweled eye made of silver and ruby, worth 100 gp. The ritual’s effects last as long as the focus remains within 100' of any of the eyes. You can hide or protect the ritual’s focus in any way you like, as long as it remains within 100' of the eyes

Gentle Repose

Your practiced hands preserve the body for a later casting of raise dead

This ritual is performed on an adjacent corpse. It quintuples the time the corpse can lie dead and still be affected by Raise Dead or a similar ritual. Gentle Repose also protects the corpse from being raised as an undead creature for 150 days.

Identify

Concentrating on the item in front of you, you're able to gain insight on its properties and history.

You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the ritual. If it is a magic item or some other magic-imbued object, you learn its properties and how to use them. You learn whether any spells are affecting the item and what they are. If the item was created by a spell, you learn which spell created it.

As part of casting this ritual you may make an Arcana. This check counts as a History check to know the story of this item.

If you instead touch a creature throughout the casting, you learn what spells, if any, are currently affecting it.

Mage Armor

A shimmering barrier deflects the assassin's attack, taking him by surprise. You smirk with a grin a deliver a deadly counterattack.

When beginning the ritual, choose one creature that must remain within 30' of you for the duration of the ritual.

For the duration of the ritual, the creature gains a +2 armor bonus to AC. If you are 11th level or higher when you perform this ritual, the bonus increases to +3. If you are 21st level or higher, the bonus increases to +4.

Make Whole

As you finish the ritual, the oaken door stands whole and unblemished as if Orten the Rager hadn’t just burst through it with murder in his eyes. It’s the least you can do after using the inn to ambush the infamous barbarian.

A single object that can fit in a 10-foot cube is completely repaired. The component cost is 20 percent of the item’s cost. In cases where you attempt to repair an item not on any price list, the DM determines the cost

Mask Smells

Grinding and igniting the components, you cover up an unpleasent or revealing odor

You cover up any smells emanating from up to a 5' cube's worth of material for a duration based on your Arcana check. Depending on your result you may also be able to replace the smell with something more pleasing or otherwise desireable. You can always "downgrade" your new smell result.

You whisper a message into a distant target's ear

You can make an Arcana check in place of medicine check to help a creature recover from a disease or injury. If you are trained in medicine, you gain a +2 bonus to this roll or can instead make a medicine check with an additional +2 bonus.

Shenta's Floating Disk

You conjure a small disk of force to carry your luggage.

You create a circular, horizontal plane of force, 3 feet in diameter and 1 inch thick, that floats 3 feet above the ground in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within range. The disk can hold a number of pounds equal to fourty times your Arcana check result.

The disk is immobile while you are within 20 feet of it. If you move more than 20 feet away from it, the disk follows you so that it remains within 20 feet of you. It can move across uneven terrain, up or down stairs, slopes and the like, but it can’t cross an elevation change of 10 feet or more. For example, the disk can’t move across a 10-foot-deep pit, nor could it leave such a pit if it was created at the bottom. If you move more than 100 feet from the disk (typically because it can’t move around an obstacle to follow you), the ritual ends.

Speak with Animals

It's amazing what the animals see but do not tell. Such as which way that talking llama went.

Water Walk

You or an ally gain the ability to walk on water as if it were solid ground. If the water is rough or choppy treat it as difficult terrain. The target of this ritual can end its benefits as a free action. The target can immerse itself in water or swim underwater if desired without needing to end the ritual.

Unseen Servant

Why bother with real servants when magical ones are so much more obedient?

  • Duration: Until you fall unconscious or dismiss the servant

You conjure a Medium unseen servant of invisible force. It obeys your commands, moves at your speed, can lift up to 100 pounds, and performs basic functions and repetitive tasks, such as cleaning, making camp, and moving, holding, or carrying objects.

An unseen servant never tires. It cannot move more than 100' from your position. It does not occupy any space and cannot attack or be attacked. You may only have one unseen servant at a time from this ritual

Focus: A ceramic hand. The person who holds this focus is empowered to command any unseen servants summoned with it. If the focus is broken or not in anyone's possession for a minute or longer, all unseen servants bound to it disappear and any items they were holding are dropped.

Vylae's Silent Image

You conjure images of you and your companions sleeping, then wait in the next room over for the assassins to make the next move.

You create the image of an object, a creature, or some other visible phenomenon that is no larger than a 15-foot cube. The image appears at a spot within range and lasts for the duration. The image is purely visual, it isn't accompanied by sound, smell, or other sensory effects.

You can use a standard action to cause the image to move to any spot within range. As the image changes location, you can alter its appearance so that its movements appear natural for the image. For example, if you create an image of a creature and move it, you can alter the image so that it appears to be walking.

Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it. A creature that uses a standard action to examine the image can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Insight check against your Arcana check result. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the creature can see through the image.

Level 2

Absorb Weapon

The assassin's dagger merges with her forearm, neatly allowing her to enter the ball 'unarmed'

When you begin this ritual, choose a weapon (or other object), a creature, and an area of flesh on that creature roughly the size of the chosen object. When the ritual is completed, the object is harmlessly absorbed into the designated patch of flesh, leaving a faint marking with perception DC equal to your Arcana check to notice. Note that a creature can only make a perception check to notice this marking if the affected portion of flesh is visible. The marking is similarly hidden from magical detection, requiring an Arcana check with DC equal to your Arcana check to notice. The absorbed object cannot be felt under the skin and doesn't restrict your range of motion in any way.

When you touch the spot (usually requiring a minor action), or when the ritual duration expires, the object appears in your hand and the ritual ends.

Abundant Vegetation

The existing vegetation expands to impeding movement

You can sculpt and empower the vegetation in an area, with the size based on your Arcana check result

You can grow light vegetation into medium vegetation, which functions as difficult terrain. You can grow medium vegetation into heavy vegetation, which serves as blocking terrain. When you create blocking terrain you can choose whether it also obstructs vision.

Air Breathing

The Sahuagin sprinkles some ground dragonshards and says a few words before fully emerginf from the water, now able to breathe clearly while conducting business on the surface

Alice's Conceal Object

Some words and some dust make your shoddy wagon look like an expensive carriage

When you cast this ritual, select one object or portion of an object no bigger than a 5' cube. You can disguise the object however you please - turn it invisible, make it look like another object, or anything else imaginable.

This is an illusion with a perception DC equal to your Arcana check result.

Arcane Lock

A few words of binding seal the door shut

You touch a closed door, window, gate, chest, or other entryway, and it becomes locked for the duration. You and the creatures you designate when you cast this ritual can open the object normally. You can also set a password that, when spoken within 5 feet of the object, suppresses this ritual for 1 minute. Otherwise, it is impassable until it is broken or the spell is dispelled or suppressed. The Knock ritual can dispel or suppress an Arcane Lock.

While affected by this ritual, the object is more difficult to break or force open, increasing the Strength DC by 10.

Darkness

The chosen area becomes utterly impermeable to light

Competing Rituals

Many rituals cancel each other out, either directly or indirectly. Divinaton rituals can bypass deception rituals, or deception rituals can bypass divination rituals. This is resolved through comparing the arcana check results, sometimes with a modifier to advantage one ritual or the other.

Detect Anima

Your vision deepens in intensity as you see the energy that flows through everything, clearly identifying the dark energies holding the skeletons together

When you cast the ritual, specify a particular kind of animate creature, such as a zombie or iron golem. Until the end of the duration, you can detect whether that particular kind of animate creature is within a 5 times your Arcana check feet of you. Furthermore, you get a "getting warmer" or "getting colder" feeling for the nearest specimen of that animate creature.

As a standard action you may change what kind of animate creature the ritual detects.

Disguise Self

Your form blurs for a moment before you suddenly appear in your new, gruffer, shorter form

When that circumstance occurs, a magical mouth appears on the object and recites the message in your voice and at the same volume you spoke. If the object you chose has a mouth or something that looks like a mouth (for example, the mouth of a statue), the magical mouth appears there so that the words appear to come from the object's mouth. When you cast this ritual, you can have the ritual end after it delivers its message, or it can remain and repeat its message whenever the trigger occurs.

The triggering circumstance can be as general or as detailed as you like, though it must be based on visual or audible conditions that occur within 30 feet of the object. For example, you could instruct the mouth to speak when any creature moves within 30 feet of the object or when a silver bell rings within 30 feet of it.

You can use a standard action to cause the image to move to any spot within range. As the image changes location, you can alter its appearance so that its movements appear natural for the image. For example, if you create an image of a creature and move it, you can alter the image so that it appears to be walking.

Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it. A creature that uses a standard action to examine the image can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Insight check against your Arcana check result. Your Arcana check result determines how many rounds the ritual lasts. Each round the ritual can speak up to 25 words, make other sounds, or simply be the faint stirring of the air. Illuminated incorporeal and invisible creatures do not benefit from concealment, and so attacks against them suffer no attack penalty

A character “flying” in this fashion moves at 30 feet per round and can make one turn, in any direction, once per round, by redefining its personal gravity. When you perform the ritual, ask up to three questions about possible courses of action. A translucent blue hand appears and indicates with a gesture what the most rewarding course of action is. If you describe courses of action that refer to directions or specific objects, then the hand points toward the choice that bears the greatest reward. If you ask the hand, “Should we head down the stairs or through the doors?” then the hand responds by pointing either to the stairs or the doors. If you ask the hand, “Which of these three levers should we pull first?” then the hand responds by pointing to a lever.

If you describe only a single course of action, the ritual assumes that inaction is your other option. The hand either beckons you (to indicate that you should proceed) or gestures for you to halt. For example, the question “Should we explore the ruins of Solitronia?” results in the hand either beckoning you or gesturing for you to halt.

The hand can’t assess events in the far future; its judgment extends only to likely events in the next hour. If the hand can’t indicate a preference, the ritual has no effect and expends no components.

There are two drawbacks to using the ritual to aid your decisions. First, fate values rewards over risk, and this ritual provides guidance accordingly. It points you toward a high risk, high reward option before pointing you toward a low risk, low reward alternative. For example, if one tunnel leads to a dragon and great wealth and the other tunnel leads back to town, then the hand points toward the dragon. However, a high risk, low reward alternative is considered less rewarding than a low risk, low reward option.

Second, the hand can choose only the most rewarding course of action relative to the alternatives provided. That doesn’t mean that the indicated choice is necessarily a good idea, only that it’s a better idea than the other options you’ve indicated. In the example above, if all three levers activate traps, then the hand points toward the lever that triggers a trap less lethal than the others.

Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it. If the creature you choose has an Intelligence of 3 or lower or doesn't speak any language, the creature is unaffected.

You initially learn the surface thoughts of the creature--what is most on its mind in that moment. As an action, you can either shift your attention to another creature's thoughts or attempt to probe deeper into the same creature's mind. If you probe deeper, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw. If it fails, you gain insight into its reasoning (if any), its emotional state, and something that looms large in its mind (such as something it worries over, loves, or hates). If it succeeds, the ritual ends. Either way, the target knows that you are probing into its mind, and unless you shift your attention to another creature's thoughts, the creature can use its action on its turn to make an Intelligence check contested by your Intelligence check; if it succeeds, the ritual ends.

Questions verbally directed at the target creature naturally shape the course of its thoughts, so this ritual is particularly effective as part of an interrogation.

You can also use this ritual to detect the presence of thinking creatures you can't see. When you cast the ritual or as your action during the duration, you can search for thoughts within 30 feet of you. The ritual can penetrate barriers, but 2 feet of rock, 2 inches of any metal other than lead, or a thin sheet of lead blocks you. You touch a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long. One end of the rope then rises into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground. At the upper end of the rope, an invisible entrance opens to an extradimensional space that lasts until the ritual ends.

The extradimensional space can be reached by climbing to the top of the rope. The space can hold as many as eight Medium or smaller creatures. The rope can be pulled into the space, making the rope disappear from view outside the space.

Attacks and rituals can't cross through the entrance into or out of the extradimensional space, but those inside can see out of it as if through a 3-foot-by-5- foot window centered on the rope.

Anything inside the extradimensional space drops out when the ritual ends.

You create a circular, horizontal plane of force, 4 feet in diameter and 1 inch thick, that normally floats 3 feet above the ground in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within range. The disk can hold a number of pounds equal to eighty times your Arcana check result.

The disk is immobile while you are within 20 feet of it. If you move more than 20 feet away from it, the disk follows you so that it remains within 20 feet of you. The disk will float and fly in the air to follow you, crossing pits or other such obstacles. If you move more than 100 feet from the disk (typically because it can’t move around an obstacle to follow you), the ritual ends.
