Way of Enlightenment
While all monks seek to achieve a perfection in their bodies and mastery of their ki energy, there are those who look beyond the physical world into the different essences of life. Masters of this tradition were said to be enlightened, entering a state beyond what most mortals would experience, and were able to manipulate the energies that governed the mind, body, and soul of living creatures. Those who follow in these footsteps seek to find the same state of being by understanding the different energies of ki.
Ki Attunement
When choosing this monastic tradition at 3rd level, you have learned to attune your ki energy to the different energies of the creatures around you. At the end of a short or long rest, you may spend 1 minute in meditation to attune to one of the ki energies listed below. You may only be attuned to one of the three energies at a time, and you gain the following benefits.
Mind. Your mind is sharpened to the flow of battle and thought, allowing you to better prepare your defenses. As a reaction to being hit by a melee weapon attack, you can deflect a portion of the blow. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your monk level. If the damage is reduced to 0, you may spend a ki point to make an unarmed strike against the attacker.
While attuned to the flow of your mind, you are more capable of recalling information you would have read or heard about in the past. You gain proficiency in History.
Body. The physical manifestation of the material plane hums to your senses, causing your unarmed strikes to land more forcefully. Once per turn when you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you may add a bonus to the damage roll equal to half of your monk level (rounded up).
While attuned to the vibrations of the physical world, you are able to more easily move through it. You gain proficiency in Athletics.
Soul. You become keen the presence of the living energy of creatures around you, and can redirect it. Once per turn when you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you may grant a target friendly creature of your choice within 30 feet of you temporary hit points equal to your monk level.
While attuned to the essence of life, you better understand the divine power from the outer planes. You gain proficiency in Religion.
Breath of Life
At 6th level, you can expel a portion of your essence to aid your nearby allies. As an action, you can spend 2 ki points to restore 2d6 hit points to all friendly creatures within 15 feet of you. Creatures healed in this way gain an additional 10 feet of movement until the end of their next turn.
Shielding Essence
At 11th level, you have learned to manipulate the energy that would fatally wound a creature. When a creature that you can see would drop to 0 hit points, you can use your reaction to spend 2 ki points and instead have that creature drop to 1 hit point.
Balanced Pose
At 17th level, you are able to focus your energy in offensive strikes that also defend your position. When you take the Dodge action on your turn, you may spend a ki point to go into a meditative pose until the start of your next turn. While you are in this pose, you gain the following:
- You gain an additional number of reactions equal to your Wisdom modifier. These additional reactions can only be used to make opportunity attacks.
- In addition to all other situations that grant you the ability to make an opportunity attack, you are able to make opportunity attacks against creatures when they come within 30 feet of you for the first time on their turn, and if they end their turn within the 30 feet of you.
- Your melee attacks have a range of 30 feet.
