Vaprak the Rapacious

Vaprak is the demigod of trolls and ogres, and an exarch of Gruumsh. Trolls that worship Gruumsh consider Vaprak their patron and often build bloody shrines and hold cannibalistic feasts in his name. He is far more cunning than he appears, being more than a simpleminded predator as some of Gruumsh’s other exarchs are.

The King Eater. Vaprak is called the Rapacious because of his hunger for gore spiced by fear, but he is also known as the King Eater. When he appears in the world or on one of its echo planes, he often seeks out the rulers most responsible for sustaining the light amid the darkness of the world, devouring them in a display of destruction that sows terror among their followers.

Claws of Vaprak. Vaprak’s severed claw is rumored to be a powerful artifact, but as a troll he has always regenerated his missing hand. Many have claimed to own the claw, but the powers ascribed to the item change with the possessor. In truth, many such artifacts have existed, either as gifts of Vaprak’s favor or as trophies claimed by foes. Each claw functions for a while, but eventually withers away, often when it is needed most.

A creature that gains this boon can cast Bigby's hand once per day with the option of using Strength as their spellcasting ability. Doing so requires severing their own hand, which reduces their hit point maximum by 20 until the spell ends and the severed hand is reattached. If the magic hand is destroyed, this loss is permanent until the hand is restored by magic such as the regenerate spell.

Immutable Form. Vaprak is immune to any spell or effect that would alter his form. Even in death, his remains can't be disintegrated, transformed, or otherwise destroyed by any means short of a wish.

Keen Smell. Vaprak has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Regeneration. Vaprak regains 20 hit points at the start of his turn. If Vaprak takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of his next turn. Vaprak dies only if he starts his turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.

Vaprak's Vengeance. When Vaprak dies, his remains fill a 15-foot square on the ground, and are difficult terrain. When a creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, the creature is targeted by a claw attack.

Actions

Multiattack. Vaprak uses Rotting Roar if he can. He then makes three attacks: one with his bite and two with his claws (or one with his claw if Vaprak's Claw is active.)

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 21). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained. Vaprak has two claws, each of which can grapple one target.

Rotting Roar (Recharge 5-6). Each creature of Vaprak's choice that is within 120 feet of Vaprak and can hear him must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. While frightened in this way, a creature can't regain hit points. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Vaprak's Claw. Vaprak severs one of his hands, which drops to the ground in a space within 10 feet of him. While the hand is severed, Vaprak's current and maximum hit points are reduced by 20. Vaprak can use his action to reattach the severed hand if it is within his reach, otherwise it regrows after one minute.

The hand behaves as if Vaprak had cast Bigby's hand using Strength as his spellcasting ability (spell save DC 21, +13 to hit with spell attacks) without requiring concentration. The severed hand has 100 hit points and Vaprak's Regeneration trait, and deals slashing damage instead of force damage. The hand acts on its own if Vaprak is incapacitated, and dies after one minute.
