Oath of Protection
The Oath of Protection is a path followed by those who swear to protect all they can. Also called Guardians, they are some of the most ardent supporters of gods of protection such as Helm, Ilmater and Paladine. Their purpose is to protect those who need protection, and remove those that would attempt to prey on the weak.
Tenets of Protection
Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Devotion vary, paladins of this oath share these tenets.
The Strong should Protect the Weak. If someone is hurt, weak, or under privileged, it is your duty to raise them up.
Self Sacrifice. You can save many more lives if you are willing to sacrifice yourself in there defence.
Your Strength demands Action. Your might is great, and therefore requires you to act whenever you can, for the betterment of the world.
Oath spells
You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.
| Paladin Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3rd | absorb elements, sanctuary |
| 5th | prayer of healing, warding bond |
| 9th | protection from energy, spirit guardians |
| 13th | guardian of faith, stone skin |
| 17th | greater restoration, wall of force |
Channel Divinity
When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.
Divine Ward. As an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer of shielding, using your Channel Divinity. You grant one creature within 30ft of you temporary hit points equal to twice your paladin level + your Charisma modifier, which last for 1 minute.
Stand Aside. You can use your Channel Divinity to exude a forceful presence. As an action, you force each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, a creature can't willingly move closer to you for 1 minute. The affected creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Aura of the Protector
Starting at 7th level, you emanate an aura of protection, granting you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you advantage on Strength and Dexterity ability checks and saving throws against effects that would knock them prone, restrain them, or force their movement.
At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
Guardian's Blessing
Beginning at 15th level, when you cast a paladin spell that targets a single creature, you can grant that creature a number of temporary hit points equal to half your paladin level + your Charisma modifier, which last for 1 minute.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1), and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Avatar of Protection
At 20th level, your magic and skill as a defender is unmatched. As an action, you can magically become the mighty protector, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:
- You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage.
- Attacks against other friendly creatures within 30ft of you have disadvantage.
- You can use your Lay on Hands feature as a bonus action, rather than an action.
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
