Ranger Archetype

Chaos Arrow

The Chaos Arrow archetype is for Rangers touched by Wild Magic. The chaotic nature of raw magic has altered them physically and through enough strain, it has begun to reveal itself. This results in occasional bursts of energy being expelled from them during times of stress. Chaos Arrows work towards harnessing and controlling this magic, and giving it more defined direction.

Chaotic Attacks

At 3rd level, you gain the ability to enhance your attacks with random bursts of energy. You gain 2 charges of Chaotic Magic, these charges are recovered on short or long rests. Before making an attack roll, you can release a burst of wild magic, expending one use of your Chaotic Magic. You gain advantage on the attack roll, and if you hit, roll 1d8 to determine a random damage type from the following list. Deal an additional 1d8 damage of the type that you rolled. The number of charges you have increases to 3 at 7th level, and increases to 4 at 15th level. The additional damage dice increase to 2d8 at 11th level.

Roll Damage Type
1 Acid
2 Fire
3 Cold
4 Lightning
5 Thunder
6 Necrotic
7 Radiant
8 Force

Reactive Surge

At 7th level, twice per short or long rest, you may choose to allow the wild magic to surge through you in moments of peril. As a reaction when you are attacked, roll 1d6 and take the result from the following table. Any movement from this effect is resolved after the incoming attack is resolved.

Roll Result
1 Blink to a space 5ft away from where you were
2 Blink next to the closest ally within 60ft of you
3 Blink to a location of your choice within 30ft of you
4 Immediately make a single attack against the attacking enemy
5 Gain resistance to whatever damage type you are being attacked by until the start of your next turn
6 Cast the spell spike growth at 2nd level, targeted beneath yourself

Controlled Chaos

At 11th level you've gained a modicum of control over your abilities. Twice per short or long rest you can roll two dice when determining the result of Chaotic Attacks and Reactive Surge, and choose whichever result you prefer.

Unbridled Chaos

At 15th level, you've learned how to unleash a storm of controlled wild magic. When you use your Chaotic Attacks or Reactive Surge feature, you may choose to activate Unbridled Chaos. When you activate Unbridled Chaos, roll 4 additional times on the table of whichever ability you apply it to, and resolve each result in whatever order you choose, for a total of 5 rolls.

When you use this with Chaotic Attacks, you deal an additional 2d8 damage of every type that you roll for a total of 10d8 additional damage split between the different types. If you roll a 5 twice when using Unbridled Chaos with Reactive Surge, gain immunity to the damage type until the start of you next turn, further rolls of a 5 have no additional effect. Additionally for every roll of a 6 past the first, increase the spell level you cast spike growth at by 1. Unbridled Chaos may be used once per long rest. This increases to twice per long rest at level 20.
