Dragonborn

Subraces

You share your draconic ancestry with other dragonborn, but have a different set of traits due to your otherworldly heritage. You can choose either of these sets of traits instead of the normal Dragonborn traits.

Faerie Dragonborn

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age. Faerie dragonborn grow at the same rate as other dragonborn, but their scales change color as they age. Newborns are pale pink deepening to red at about age 5, shifting to yellow and green in middle age then shades of blue and violet by 50. Faerie dragonborn that live to 80 have scales that are nearly black.

Alignment. Faerie Dragonborn tend toward the chaotic and good alignments, and take life less seriously than their kin. They find much in common with halflings, though gnomes tend to be distrustful.

Size. Just as faerie dragons are smaller than true dragons, fey Dragonborn are shorter and lighter than their larger kin, averaging about 4 feet tall and 50 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Trickster. You know the minor illusion cantrip. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it.

Euphoria Breath. You can use your action to exhale a gas that causes creatures to fall into a blissful stupor. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Wisdom saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature that fails its save is overcome with happiness, and is incapacitated until it takes damage or until the start of your next turn. Creatures that cannot be charmed are immune to this effect.

After you use your euphoria breath, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and your choice of either Draconic or Sylvan. Faerie dragonborn brought up in Feywild communities tend to pick up Sylvan, while those raised elsewhere typically learn Draconic.

Shadow Dragonborn

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age. Shadow dragonborn age at the same rate as other dragonborn, reaching adulthood by 15. They age rapidly except in the Shadowfell, where they can live hundreds of years.

Alignment. Shadow dragonborn are rarely good-aligned, except for those who consciously turn away from the darkness and seek to kindle a light in their souls.

Size. Shadow dragonborn also stand well over 6 feet tall and average almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. Accustomed to the shadows, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Breath Weapon. You can use your action to exhale shadowy energy. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Constitution saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 necrotic damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level.

After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance. You have resistance to necrotic damage.

Natural Stealth. You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.

Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The Language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.

New Feat: Living Shadow

Prerequisite: Dragonborn

You are suffused with the energy of the Shadowfell and gain the following benefits:

  • While in dim light or darkness, you have resistance to damage that isn't force, psychic, or radiant.
  • While in dim light or darkness, you can take the Hide action as a bonus action.
