Sacred Oath: Oath of The Law

Sometimes called enforcers, justiciars, or martinets, paladins that swear an Oath of The Law are of the most resolute beings in all of the planes. It is by their steely effort that order is maintained and anarchy quashed. Most paladins that swear this oath are also devout followers of Primus, a deity of war and protection said to be constructed of pure Law.

Restriction: Warforged Only

Only warforged can swear an Oath of The Law.

Your DM can lift this restriction to better suit the campaign. The restriction exists for thematic purposes. It might not apply to your DM's setting.

Tenets of The Law

The first time a paladin takes up this oath, they choose a particular transgression, a fundamental law of cosmic order that they care deeply enough about to dedicate themselves to; one which they will stop at nothing to put an end to. To accept this duty is to accept the Tenets of The Law.

Remain Vigilant. Criminals do not rest, so neither can I. I will remain wakeful even in my most tiring hours, ever ready to defend what is right.

Heed the Judgement. I will make no personal judgement upon another creature. Only when The Law deems it appropriate will I begin my pursuit of a sinner.

Find the Guilty. I will be relentless in my pursuit of the vile and corrupt. To swear this oath is to be unfaltering when confronted by any obstruction.

Enforce the Penalty. It is my responsibility to seek out those deserving divine punishment, and to deliver it as The Law sees fit.

Endure and Prevail. Faced with impending defeat, it is best to withdraw, hone my strengths, and seek a way to even the odds.

Examples of Fundamental Laws

    1. One must not cause great changes by meddling with time or dimensions.

2. Mortals must not tamper in the affairs of gods or pantheons, or attempt to become one themselves.

3. A mortal must not work to avoid ones own natural death.

4. One mortal must not be the cause of catastrophic disaster.

5. One must honor any oath or contract mutually agreed upon, whether it was spoken or written.

6. One must not elude justice.

Oath Spells

Paladin Level Spells
3rd ensnaring strike, hunter's mark
5th detect thoughts, hold person
11th dispel magic, haste
14th freedom of movement, locate creature
17th commune (ritual), scrying

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Unstoppable Force. You can use your Channel Divinity as a bonus action to break through any obstacle. You can move up to half your speed in a straight line without provoking opportunity attacks. If there is a creature in your path, you deal 1d4 bludgeoning damage to it and push it to the nearest unoccupied space out of your path. If there is an object or structure in your path, you deal 30 + your paladin level bludgeoning damage to it, and your movement ends unless the object or structure is destroyed.

No Escape. You can use your Channel Divinity as an action to conjure divine metal chains in your open hand, which go forth to bind your quarry. Choose up to 5 creatures you can see within 30 feet of you. A targeted creature must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be grappled and pulled to the nearest unoccupied space adjacent to you. A grappled creature can repeat the saving throw at the start of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. This effect ends early if you release the chain (no action required by you).

Aura of Efficiency

Starting at 7th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you ignore the effects of up to 5 levels of exhaustion.

Additionally, when you or any creature within 10 feet of you make an attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, you can forgo rolling the d20 to take 10 as the die roll result. You can
use this feature a number of times equal to your
proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses
when you finish a long rest.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases
to 30 feet.

War Machine

At 15th level, nothing can impede
on your pursuit of the unlawful.
You ignore all sources of difficult
terrain.

Additionally, whenever you deal
damage to an object or structure,
the damage dealt is doubled
and ignores any damage
threshold.

Inevitable

At 20th level, you can become an indomitable embodiment of cosmic law as an action. For one minute, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • Using Unstoppable Force doesn't expend a use of Channel Divinity.
  • When you miss with an attack, you still inflict half as much damage as you would've had you hit.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
