Crafting (Intellect)

Use Crafting when…

  • …the character wants to craft a weapon, suit of armor, or another personal item.
  • …the character wants to repair a damaged piece of personal gear.

Do not use when…

  • …the character is attempting to mix a potion or elixir. This would be covered Alchemy.
  • …the character is attempting to create or repair a building, ship, wagon, or other large object. This would be covered by Engineering.
Cryptography (Intellect)

Use Cryptography when…

  • …the character attempts to either cipher or decipher a message in a written missive.
  • …the character wants to create a cipher or code for their own use.
  • …the character wants to solve puzzles or riddles that rely on written word.

Do not use when…

  • …the character is attempting to translate something written in another language. That would be covered by a Knowledge skill.
  • …the character is attempting to read an ancient language or dialect. That would be covered by Knowledge (Lore).
Engineering (Intellect)

Use Engineering when…

  • …the character is attempting to design, build or repair a building, ship, wagon, or other large piece of equipment.

Education (Intellect)

Use Knowledge (Education) when…

  • …the character is trying to research subjects such as mathematics or literature.
  • …the character is trying to research politics.
  • …the character is trying to research recent history.

Do not use when…

  • …the character is trying to research ancient history, legends and lore, theology, or magic. This is covered by Knowledge (Lore).
  • …the character is trying to research the Shadowlands, blood magic, or foreign magic. This is covered by Knowledge (Forbidden).
  • …the character is trying to research the location of a geographical location, the customs or history of a particular region, or chart a course on a map. This is covered by Knowledge (Geography).
Warfare (Intellect)

Use Knowledge (Warfare) when…

  • …the character is researching military history.
  • …the character is trying to find information on the enemy commander’s military successes and failures.
  • …the character is trying to identify the fighting style used by another character by watching them.
  • …the character is analyzing a plan of attack, studying a battlefield, or something similar.

GENESYS

New Magic Skills

Invocation (Intellect)

Invocation is the skill used to cast Rokugani magic, which invokes elemental kami to cast affect the world. Only characters with Invocation as a career skill can purchase ranks in the skill, and only characters with at least 1 rank of Invocation can learn any Rokugani invocations.

When increasing the effects of invocations cast by Invocation checks, they are based on the caster’s Knowledge (Lore).




Schools

The following is a list of schools that a player character can start as. As described in question 3 from Book 1: Earth, each PC will choose one school according to their Clan of origin.

Characters typically do not take a school that is not part of their clan, and may only do so at the GM’s discretion. Additionally, characters may train in a second school at the GM’s discretion; the specifics of how the character does this and how much XP it may cost to take additional schools is up the player and the GM. When a character does take an additional school, they add that school’s bonus career skills to their own career skills (but they do not gain any new free skill ranks).

Only characters with Invocation as a career skill may take a school with the “Shugenja” tag.

Crab Clan Schools

Hida Defender [Bushi]

Hida Defender Skills: Athletics, Discipline, Melee (Heavy), Resilience.

Once per encounter, when your character would be incapacitated due to exceeding their wound or strain threshold, spend a Story Point. Your character is not incapacitated until the end of their next turn. If your character reduces their wounds or strain below their threshold before the end of their next turn, they are not incapacitated.

Once per encounter, make a Negotiation check to acquire an item with a rarity no greater than 2 x your character’s ranks in Way of the Carp (the difficulty of the check is based on the rarity of the item being sought; see Genesys Core Rulebook p. 82). If successful, your character may gift the item to the target of a social check and subsequently upgrade the ability of the check by your character’s ranks in Way of the Carp.

Treasures of the Carp

Once per session, your character may introduce into negotiations one potential concession that an opponent will do nearly anything to obtain.

What the concession is should be up to you and the GM. It should be something that one party is willing to give up or exchange, and it should be something concrete. The lengths the other party is willing to go are dependent on the scenario, and may range from offering a drastic decrease in price to agreeing to an immediate cease in an ongoing conflict. At minimum, the difficulty of further Negotiation checks should be decreased.

Crane Clan Schools

When your character makes a social check to knowingly work with the target's Strength or Desire Motivations (see Genesys Core Rulebook p. 123), your character may spend a Story Point to upgrade the ability of their check. Upgrade once if your character is working with the target's Strength, and upgrade twice if they are working with the target's Desire.

Voice of Honor

Tier: 4
Activation: Action
Ranked: No
During a social encounter, select a target and make an opposed Negotiation check. If successful, one bystander equal to your character’s Presence sees one of the target’s points (chosen by your character) as maliciously unreasonable.

The GM has the final say as to whether bystanders could see a point as unreasonable, based on who those bystanders are and what the point is. In these cases, the GM can suggest a modified version of that argument that would be more believable.

 

Dragon Clan Schools

Mirumoto Twin Sword [Bushi]

What this entails exactly is up to you and the GM, and the GM may rule that some actions (such as causing your character to fly) are too obvious to be ignored.
