From Another World

You lived in a developed modern society, where magic is but fantasy. You held employment, paid rent, drove cars, and used the internet. You were a normal human.

You began your adventuring career suddenly and unexpectedly. Perhaps you were transported to a fantasy world. Perhaps your modern mundane world turned out to be more than you expected. How will you use the influences of the modern world in your adventure?

  • Skill Proficiencies: Choose 1. Instead of Arcana, you may choose Technology.
  • Tool Proficiencies: Choose 1.
  • Equipment: A cell phone with 1d100 percent of its charge left, a set of modern clothes, a set of house or car keys, a metal or plastic water bottle, a wallet containing $50.

Former Employment

Your past life has provided you with some proficiencies and equipments from your former employment. You gain these in addition to the proficiencies and equipment from this background.

Feature: Modern Technology

As someone from a modern (and nonmagical) society, you are woefully incompetent when it comes to the mechanisms of magic. However, you may be familiar with the intricacies of modern technology: how to hotwire a car, how to assemble a computer, how to make chemicals like thermite. In lieu of Arcana, you can choose the Intelligence (Technology) skill.

Cell Phone

Technological Item

A cell phone can be used in a variety of ways. A cell phone consumes 1 percent of its battery every minute it is in use.

  • Torch: The phone provides bright light in a 10-foot cone and dim light for an additional 10 feet.
  • Clock: The phone tracks time and can be set to ring at specific times.
  • Recorder: The phone can be used to record and replay sounds or conversations.
  • Audio Player: The phone can play songs or other audio files saved in it.
  • ... and many more!

Painkillers

Technological Item

Painkillers can be taken in order to dull pain. Each pill provides 1d6 temporary hit points when consumed, which come into effect 10 minutes after taking the pill. You can take a number of pills equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum 1) at a single time. If you take more pills, you become poisoned and do not gain temporary hit points from the additional pills. If you take a number of pills that exceeds your Constitution Score, you die.

For example, a character with a +3 Constitution modifier can take 3 pills at once, gaining 3d6 temporary hit points.
