Vehicle Creation in Genesys

By c__beck

Creation

When creating a vehicle, you follow these steps:

  1. Choose frame type
  2. Power Plant
  3. Locomotion: Speed and Handling
  4. Protection: Armour & Defense
  5. Misc

Choose Frame Type

The basic skeleton of all vehicles is the frame. The frame not only determines base statistics (silhouette, Hull Trauma Threshold, crew, passenger, etc.), it also determines is the limiting factor in what can an cannot be equipped in a specific vehicle.

An important note is that while frame types are the basic type of vehicle you are creating, the specifics are up to you. If you are making a sci-fi hover bike or a modern-day motorcycle they both use the same frame because they both fulfill the same role. The narrative effects may be different but the statistics are (largely) the same.

For now I'll be using the frame types from Fully Operational, the Age of Rebellion sourcebook.

Modification to Base Profile

While the base profiles above can be used for most vehicles, some require additional changes.

A vehicle can increase or decrease its silhouette by increasing the base cost of the frame by 20%. This changes only the silhouette of the vehicle, nothing more (I.E. the HTT, compliment, etc don't change).

Additionally, you may increase the HTT of a vehicle by its silhouette for a cost of 1,000 currency per silhouette. This option may be taken a number of times equal to half the vehicle's silhouette, rounded down (minimum of 1).

Choose Power Plant

Power plants determine how much SST is available to the craft.

There are three different power plants available:

Basic Power Plant

Base System Strain Threshold: 2 x Silhouette
Cost: 500 per silhouette
Hard Points: 1

Improved Power Plant

Base System Strain Threshold: 5 x Silhouette
Cost: 1,200 per silhouette
Hard Points: 2

Supreme Power Plant

Base System Strain Threshold: 8 x Silhouette
Cost: 1,600 per silhouette
Hard Points: 3

Power Plant Upgrade

Each power plant type can be Upgraded to increase it's System Strain Threshold.

The improvement increases the SST silhouette multiplier by 1 for 150 currency per silhouette of the vehicle. Or, for 300 currency per silhouette, the SST silhouette multiplier is increased by 2.

Either option increases the hard point requirement by 1.

Locomotion

There are two parts to locomotion: the engine that moves the craft and the manoeuvrability that determines base Handling.

The Engine is what allows vehicles to move. If you don't have a basic engine, it lacks even the most rudimentary navigational systems like maneuvering thrusters.

Engines

Basic Engine

Base Speed: 0
Cost: 700 per silhouette
Hard Points: 0

Improved Engine

Base Speed: 2
Cost: 2,000 per silhouette
Hard Points: 2

Supreme Engine

Base Speed: 4
Cost: 3,000 per silhouette
Hard Points: 3

Engine Upgrade

Each engine can be upgraded to increase the speed of the vehicle by 1. This costs 500 currency per silhouette and takes up 1 hard point.

Maximum Speed

The maximum speed of any vehicle is limited by silhouette. Bigger vehicles just can't go as fast as smaller ones.

Silhouette Max. Speed
2 4
3 5
4 4
5–7 3
8+ 2

Handling

The silhouette of the vehicle determines base Handling, as shown on the table below.

Silhouette Base Handling Max. Handling
2 +1 +4
3 +0 +4
4 -1 +3
5–6 -2 +2
7+ -3 +0
Upgraded Handling

Each increase of handling costs 800 currency per silhouette of the vehicle, up to a maximum as show in the above table. It takes up a number of hard points equal to ½ the amount of handling added (rounding up).

Add Protection

Vehicles are protected by both their Armour and Defense.

Armour

Armour reduces the incoming damage on successful combat checks against the vehicle. The heavier the armour, the less manoeuvreable the vehicle.

All craft start with a base armour value determined by their silhouette, as shown in the table below.

Silhouette Base Armour Rating
2–3 0
4–6 2
7+ 4

Extra armour can be purchased for 500 currency per silhouette per extra point of armour added. It takes up a number of hard points equal to ½ the amount of armour added (rounding up). In addition, the maximum armour value for any vehicle is 1 greater than their silhouette.

Defense

No vehicle is created with a Defense score. Rather, you must install the following component to have a Defense rating. It could be a magical or technological force field, a mental barrier or something else entirely.

Defensive System

Base Defense: 1
Cost: 1,000 per silhouette
Hard Points: 1

Upgrade Defense

The cost to increase the vehicle's Defense is 800 currency per silhouette per +1 increase. This take up a number of hard points equal to ½ the amount of total Defense (rounding up). No vehicle may have a Defense rating higher than 4.

Add Additional Systems

In Progress

Vehicular Weapons

Creating vehicular weapons follow the same steps and rules as creating personal-scale versions, but with slightly different numbers.

Critical Rating

Per page 199 of the Genesys Core Rulebook, the critical rating of weapons range from 1 (the most deadly) to 6 (not likely to crit without a t), with the default rating being 3. The same guidelines apply to vehicular weapons.

Encumbrance

Vehicular weapons don't have an encumbrance rating, but they all take up one hard point.

Cost and Rarity

The cost of any weapon is calculated by adding together the cost of the damage, range, critical rating and any qualities it may have. Rarity is, ultimately, up to you.

Prices

Characteristic Price
1–2 Damage 1,000
3–4 Damage 2,500
5–6 Damage 5,000
7-9 Damage 10,000
10+ Damage 30,000
Critical Rating 5–6 0
Critical Rating 4 250
Critical Rating 3 750
Critical Rating 2 1,500
Critical Rating 1 3,000
Short Range 0
Medium Range 500
Long Range 1,500
Extreme Range 3,000
Strategic Range 6,000
Item Qualities

All of the advice on page 200 applies to item qualities. Size and planetary scale doesn't change any of it with the exception of Breach. Treat the advice for Pierce as applying to Breach.

Quality Price
Accurate 250/rank
Autofire 500
Blast half base damage
Breach 1,000/rank
Burn 1,000/rank
Concussive 5,000/rank
Defensive 250/2,500
Deflection 250/2,500
Disorient 250/rank
Ensnare 1,000/rank
Guided 500/rank
Innaccurate -375/rank
Inferior -500
Knockdown 500
Limited Ammo Special
Linked 1,000/rank
Prepare -500/rank
Reinforced 1,250
Slow-Firing -500/rank
Stun 250/rank
Sunder 1,250
Superior 1,250
Tractor 500/rank
Vicious 500/rank

Limited Ammo is a special case, as higher ranks are actually better. Therefore it has an inverse price discount. -250 for rank 5 and an additional -250 for each reduction in rank. All the way to -1,250 for Limited Ammo 1.
