\pagebreak # Monsters Walking, running, slithering or crawling. If it moves on Wraeclast, it's almost certainly dangerous. Ever since the catastrophe, new twisted animals have risen to dominance, and small, isolated groups of survivors have fought for survival. Visitors seldom come back, but the few that do have compiled a growing compendium of its inhabitants. This "Bestiary" includes varied accounts, from the scholarly writings of explorers to the terror-filled rantings of lucky escapees. Though their tales differ wildly in tone and substance, one thing is consistent: they warn that Wraeclast is a harsh, deadly, unforgiving environment, and anyone wishing to walk its paths had better be prepared. ## Standard Monsters These are the monsters that players will most commonly come across. Sometimes alone, but more often in larger numbers. ## Statistics #### Life / Energy Shield These (combined) pools correspond to the total damage a monster can suffer before death. #### Armour The flat physical damage reduction a monster possesses. Unless specified otherwise, the default value is 0. #### Resistance The flat elemental damage reduction a monster possesses, corresponding to the specific elemental resistance. Unless specified otherwise, the default value is 0. #### Speed A measure of how fast Monsters act. For reference, the default Speed of a human (or newly washed up Exile) is 2. ### Statistics Block ##### Attack Modifier The amount of flat damage added to the monsters attacks, applied before WAM. ##### WAM WAM determines how much you multiply your 1d10 roll when the monster attacks. ##### Threshold The amount of damage the monster can take before their threshold is broken. ##### Maneuver A character may contest Maneuver checks with a monster to break Engaged, with the valued stated added to the 1d10 skill roll. Alternatively a monster may also contest Maneuver to break Engaged with a character. \columnbreak ## Monster Template ___ > ## Puny Human > > ___ > - **Level** 0 > - **Life** 10 > - **Speed** 1 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| 5 | 1 | 4 | 1 | >___ > ___ > - **Level** 3 > - **Life** 15 > - **Speed** 1 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| +10 | 1 | 10 | 1 | >___ >#### Skills > ***Beg for Mercy***: The pathetic mortal drops to his knees and begs for forgiveness for his crimes. He automatically fails any Maneuver checks due to his grovelling in the dirt. > > ***Blood Spray***: Upon its inevitable death, the puny human sprays blood to dirty the floors it disgraced in life. All characters in its Zone suffer -1 Speed due to the increased lubrication until the mess is cleaned up. > >#### Description > A puny mortal unfit to grace the lands of of a true god with their presence. Their only function is to grovel, pray and finally die.
### Cruel Modifers *For some parties of particularly powerful and grizzled exiles, the standard fare of monster is simply not challenging enough. But such excellence draws unwanted attention from the inhabitants of this damned isle for with great power... comes great wealth. Either for your lives, or for your orbs, stronger beings will seek them out.*
Each type of monster has a Cruel modifier that the GM can apply to the monster type if he/she feels like increasing the difficulty of these encounters. These monsters are amongst the more vicious members of each type, infused with some of the inherent corruption and dark energies spreading through these lands.
\pagebreakNum # Undead Those that cannot die, but must go on age after age adding new victims and multiplying the evils of the world. For all that die from the preying of the Undead become themselves Undead, and prey on their kind. And so the circle goes on ever widening, like as the ripples from a stone thrown in the water... ## Zombies Do not underestimate the bloated, rotted corpses that wander the swamps and bogs of Wraeclast's shoreline. They may lack agility, but the dark corruption animating them imbues them with tremendous strength and ferocity. The island's Zombies are always hungry, and they will pursue the scent of blood relentlessly. \columnbreak ___ > ## Zombie > > ___ > - **Level** 1 > - **Life** 25 > - **Speed** 1 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+8|1|5|-3| >___ > >___ > - **Level** [N/A] > - **Life** [N/A] > - **Speed** [N/A] > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|[N/A]|[N/A]|[N/A]|[N/A]| >___ > > - **Level** 5 > - **Life** 120 > - **Speed** 1 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+35|4|40|-1| >___ > >#### Description >Whenever a person dies on this forsaken island, they rise as the living dead. Zombies are slow and sluggish, but pack a heavy punch if they do manage to attack. Sometimes they lie buried in mud or water, suddenly springing to the surface and trying to tear apart the living.
#### Cruel Modifiers: Zombies Among the most dangerous and the fastest zombies are those only freshly brought into their hideous un-life, retaining much of the agility and 'structural integrity' that they had in life. * **+2 Speed** * **20% increased Life**

All characters in Tar Zombies zone reduce their speed by 1 until they leave the zone or remove the tar. The tar remains in the Zone for 2 turns. >#### Description > Those lucky enough to wash up on the shores of Wraeclast are oft likely to find their demise in the boggy swamp-lands inland of the coast. Drawn into the tar-like depths exhaustion and finally suffocation claim these unfortunately souls, only to rise and aimlessly wander these lands forever. \columnbreak ___ > ## Poison Zombie > > ___ > - **Level** 5 > - **Life** 220 > - **Speed** 1 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| +50 | 5 | 30 | 1 | >___ >#### Skills >***Poison Cloud:*** Upon death, the Poison Zombie explodes in a massive cloud of poison. Enemies in the Poison Zombies Zone are poisoned, taking physical damage over time while inside the cloud at the start of their turn. All enemies take physical damage, which ignores all forms of Reduction at the start of their turn in the cloud. The cloud lasts for 2 turns. Enemies and allies in the cloud take a 10 penalty to Perception checks, making it nearly impossible to see in or out of the cloud. If an enemy leaves the cloud, they no longer take damage. >#### Description > Wraeclast is home to a near endless supply of venoms, diseases, toxins and other such foulness. Those that eventually succumb to these ailments are doomed to rise and spread the poisons that claimed them in life. \pagebreakNum ## Skeletons Wraeclast's skeletons are not particularly tough or threatening, but they are fairly difficult to injure with some types of weaponry. Archers or swordsmen may find themselves frustrated, watching their blows slide off hard bone or their arrows whistle harmlessly through. If you are beset by skeletons, splinter their bones with a bludgeoning weapon, and you'll likely live another day. \columnbreak ___ > ## Skeleton Warrior > > ___ > - **Level** 1 > - **Life** 15 > - **Speed** 2 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+8|1|2|1| > ___ >

They are notoriously simple-minded, and wise warriors can use that to their advantage. Skeleton Warriors walk slowly towards the nearest enemy and try to attack them. They tend to attack in large herds, dressed in a mixture of rusty weapons and armour.
#### Cruel Modifiers: Skeletons Oddly enough the most dangerous skeletons are those that have already faced the field of battle. Sharpened pieces of shattered bone are a fearsome weapon indeed when wielded with no regard for self-preservation. * **-25% Life** * **+2 WAM**
\pagebreakNum ___ > ## Skeleton Archer > > ___ > - **Level** 3 > - **Life** 50 > - **Speed** 2 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+20|1|15|1| >___ > > ___ > - **Level** 5 > - **Life** 80 > - **Speed** 2 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+35|3|20|1| >___ >#### Description >Skeleton archers tend to congregate together in small groups of 4-6. They usually carry a large bulky 2-handed axe or sword. Skeleton Executioners crit on a 10, and will mindlessly chase and attack the first enemy they see until it is dropped. >#### Description >Raised from the mightest of warriors in life, these skeletons still wield the rusted remains of the mighty weapons that carried them through life. Often their approach is preceded by the sound of those same weapons scraping against the floor.

Its razor sharp beak however is in pristine condition, clearly this part was animated with a particular function in mind.
___ > ## Dreadwheel > ___ > - **Level** 3 > - **Life** 60 > - **Speed** 4 > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|+30|1|5|1| >___ >

Dreadwheels cannot attack within their own zone. > #### Description > A body has clearly been nailed to the spokes of a wagon wheel and left to rot in the sun. Some twisted necromancer has reanimated these bodies and attached sharpened metal spokes around the wheels axis. They attack by rolling into enemies at high speeds with terrifying consequences, however can do little about enemies in close proximity.
\pagebreakNum ## Ghosts *"The blue glow I saw from afar is all around me now, it appears to have crept on board like a living thing. It surrounds me, pulsing, slithering, suffusing the very corpses of my crew mates. As I watch with unbelieving eyes, a blue, shimmering specter rises from the body of the nearest man. It just stands there for a time, and then slowly turns towards me, clutching some sort of ethereal weapon. A moment later, more shapes arise, until I am surrounded by a host of iridescent ghosts. I know not what these things are, but I am certain they afford me no good will."* \columnbreak ___ > ## Ghost > ___ > - **Level** [N/a] > - **Life** [N/a] > - **Energy Shield** [N/a]] > - **Speed** [N/a] > - **Armour** [N/a] > - **Resistance** [N/a] > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >| +[N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | > >___ >___ > - **Level** [N/a] > - **Life** [N/a] > - **Energy Shield** [N/a] > - **Speed** [N/a] > - **Armour** [N/a] > - **Resistance** [N/a] > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >| +[N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | > >___ >___ > - **Level** [N/a] > - **Life** [N/a] > - **Energy Shield** [N/a] > - **Speed** [N/a] > - **Armour** [N/a] > - **Resistance** [N/a] > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >| +[N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | [N/a] | > >___ >

Most often these take the form of sailors, crashed asunder on the rocks along with their ships. Mortal weapons possess no threat to these spectral beings, only the most powerful of blows can hope to disturb them.
#### Cruel Modifiers: Ghosts The most dangerous of these spectres are those with the strongest of grudges, the most bitter of regrets. Those that linger the longest have learned a trick or two to deal with their mortal foes. * **Can cast *Phase Run*** * **+1 Speed**

\pagebreakNum # Humans Tribes of humans that descend from exiles wrecked here hundreds of years ago, they have long since fallen into savagery and cannibalism. It is very difficult to reason or negotiate with them, but they do respect those they see as great warriors. Tribal warriors carry a wide array of simple, poorly made weapons ranging from rusty hatchets to their bare hands. Priests and shamans often accompany them, using powerful soul magic to destroy foes.

\pagebreakNum ### Bandit Elite Ruled by the three bandit lords, an unsteady peace has settled around the Forest Encampment. \pagebreakNum # Undying Gemlings still walk Sarn, hundreds of years after the cataclysmic effects that brought their way of life crashing down around them. Caught in between life and death, these undying gemlings still have their virtue gems embedded in their flesh, beating like a second heart. They sought to propel themselves beyond the limits of humanity, and in return, they have surpassed the greatest and final limit of humanity: death--at least, natural death. These Undying stalk Sarn, believing they are living as they always had. #### Cruel Modifiers: Undying Unlike many other species the most powerful of the Undying is not simply a matter of age (for they do not age), or capacity to learn (for they have none). Instead luck is the most crucial factor; the strength of the infused gems, the position within their body, and the damage it inevitably causes all contribute to the strength of their unnatural vitality. * **Undying have +10 to Armor and Resistance** * **Undying regenerate 10% of their maximum life at the end of each round.**

That wasn't true of the boy they called "The Fawn". He was born on a cold, moonless night, his birth bed illuminated only by flickering torches. The midwife who pulled him free caught one glimpse of his hairy face and stubby horns, and ran screaming from the tent. Although not limited to her, the tragedy of Mervail is perhaps the best example of this. Merveil's tears mixed with the waters of the sea, producing a dark alchemy of rage and magical corruption. The taint of her grief imbues the briny waves with life, filling them with a deadly energy and purpose. Merveil's tears can manifest as an Elemental in any body of water on Wraeclast. From a small pond, to a waterfall, to the ocean itself, nothing is free from her wrath and corruption. The Elementals appear out of nowhere, bursting up in a violent spray. They attack with makeshift appendages fashioned from the scavenged bodies of dead sea creatures, and they are extremely difficult to defeat. \columnbreak ___ > ## Water Elemental > >___ > - **Level** > - **Life** > - **Speed** > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| - | - | - | - | >___ > > ___ > - **Level** > - **Life** > - **Speed** > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| - | - | - | - | >___ > > ___ > - **Level** > - **Life** > - **Speed** > >|Attack Modifier|WAM|Threshold|Maneuver| >|:-------------:|:-:|:-------:|:------:| >| - | - | - | - | >___ >#### Skills > ***Cold Snap*** Typically Water Elementals prefer to crush their prey and cast Cold Snap on any that seem to be trying to escape their watery grave. > > ***Ice Nova*** Water Elementals disturbed at rest usually ambush their prey by erupting upwards with an **Ice Nova**. > >#### Description > Anyone foolhardy enough to venture into Wraeclast's countless swamps and bogs may well find themselves beset by the dreaded Water Elementals, born of Merveil's sorrow. They appear as rippling columns of animated, brackish water that slide over the earth, bent on destruction.
#### Cruel Modifiers: Elementals There isn't much to say about the elementals aside from bigger is better. Some men and some beast, there is little remaining of what they once were for now they are nothing but thralls to their creators. Now they are but hideous monstrosities that vaguely resemble their past selves. Either touched by the darkest magics, blessed on the altars of the damned or assembled on the butchers block, Demons can be created in many ways. Cruelly however these creatures stomachs are far smaller than their eyes and violently expel the contents upon gorging too heavily. Luckily they are mainly harmless and rarely attack unless their feasting is disturbed. \pagebreakNum # Constructs These ingenious creations are born of tempered steel, hardened rock, or other more unworldly materials. Although their makers are varied one thing none of them lack is genius. To take the inanimate and bring it to life, to grant true motion to the motionless. Some are powered by mechanical means, most by magical these constructs do exactly what their masters order them to, not one hair more or less. With none of the mortal requirements or inherent fragility, these creations are feared even more than the undead. Possessing neither greater speed nor strength over than its lesser brethren, what makes these Constructs so dangerous is their sheer durability. * **+20 to Armor and Resistance** * **Threshold becomes equal to maximum Life**.
\pagebreakNum ### Constructs of the Vaal The ancient Vaal civilisation, the founding fathers of construct technology, created a legion of these beings to enforce their rule with an iron fist which still lingers in the darker corners of Wraeclast to this very day.
