Starship Mechanic

You have spent your life modifying and repairing starships. From airlock to hyperdrive, you know ship parts and components inside out. Getting ship systems back online quickly is essential to space survival, and you've got the experience to do so.

Maybe you worked in a shipyard, repairing different vessels on a daily basis to make ends meet. Perhaps you lived aboard a starship for a good portion of your life, learning the ins and outs of power routing and sublight engine maintenance. Maybe the crew of your last vessel is only alive because your well-timed percussive maintenance got the hyperdrive operational again.

  • Skill Proficiencies: Choose 2 from Investigation, Piloting, Technology, and Perception
  • Tool Proficiencies: Mechanic's tools
  • Languages: One of your choice
  • Equipment: A set of mechanic's tools, a hydrospanner, a fusioncutter, mechanics coveralls (common clothes) and a pouch containing 50 cr.

Feature: Grease Monkey

You can easily recognize and estimate the value of common starship components. You are also good at diagnosing and repairing starship problems. You may choose to reduce either the cost or time required (but not both) by half when you make ship repairs or perform routine maintenance.

Suggested Characteristics

Starship Mechanics are needed all over the galaxy, perhaps you work for a faction or organization, ran your own business, or traded repair work for a lift to another system. Either way, you're good with your hands, and can easily find work. Mechanics are often grimy and sweaty from crawling through dusty access panels, and sometimes their demeanor is just as nasty. Some of them clean up better than others when their work is done.

d8 Personality Type
1 I prefer to get my job done, get paid, and move along quietly.
2 I am loud and gruff, and tell it like it is, whether that's what you want to hear or not.
3 I love to brag about all the famous ships I've been on, or system I've worked in.
4 I hear tales and stories from all types, and have no reason not to believe them all.
5 I am a sucker for a nice classic ship or a fast new model, always comparing engine ratings, and power output with others.
6 I like to watch and listen to ships crews while I work quietly in the background and try to piece together their stories.
7 I am always fascinated by new technology, and constantly on the lookout for the latest ship upgrades.
8 I take great pride in doing the finest quality work on every ship I touch.
d6 Ideal
1 Community. It is the duty of all civilized people to strengthen the bonds of community and the security of civilization. (Lawful)
2 Generosity. My talents were given to me so that I could use them to benefit the galaxy. (Light)
3 Freedom. Everyone should be free to pursue his or her own livelihood. (Chaotic)
4 Greed. I’m only in it for the money. (Dark)
5 People. I’m committed to the people I care about, not to ideals. (Neutral)
6 Aspiration. I work hard to be the best mechanic I can be. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 The place I learned my trade and the people who taught me mean everything to me.
2 I work hard to earn credits so I may one day secure someone's love.
3 I rigged a ship to break down for a large sum of money or a favor, now I'm on the run.
4 I want to track down the first ship I worked aboard, there are so many memories there.
5 I've been stuck in a dingy hangar all my live, now I want to get out and see the galaxy.
6 I was accused of stealing something off a customers ship, now I must clear my name.
d6 Flaw
1 I never turn down work, even when I can't keep up with it all.
2 I like to snoop through the ships I repair and often swipe a small memento.
3 I only fix it good enough to get paid. If it breaks again later, that's not my problem.
4 I often doubt my own work, sometimes redoing it again and again until it's perfect.
5 My job is to fix the ship, not fight. At the first sign of trouble, I'll bolt.
6 If I get frustrated with a difficult situation, I sometimes loose control and smash something.
