Abyssal Grimoire

This black leather clad tome is heavy and its pages are half-rotten, and smells faintly of decay. Upon close inspection of the book, there are gentle, rasping whispers that emanate through the closed cover. A large lock rests as though it once kept the book firmly closed. It has since been bent and broken.

Its bindings are thick black-iron straps and the thick cover appears to be a grey and tanned hide, folded over itself and creased as though fighting to escape the contents.

Malevolent Intent

Upon opening the book and beginning to read, the words seem blurred and unclear. The reader must immediately make a Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the reader takes 4d6 psychic damage and is able to read the book without any further effects. On a failure, the reader takes no damage and is immediately attuned to the book, which does not occupy one of the reader's attunement slots. They gain the following effects, which can only be removed by either destroying the book, a blessing from a deity specifically designed to free the reader from the attunement or a Wish spell.

Beacon of Undeath

  • Your link to the realm of the undead acts as a beacon to its lord and ruler. Orcus, the Demon Prince of the Undead, knows your exact location for the duration of the time you are attuned to the Grimoire.

Unnatural Resilience

  • You gain resistance to necrotic damage.
  • Your body hardens and grows strong, while your mind withers and drains of life. Increase your Strength and Constitution scores by 2, to a maximum of 24, and decrease your Intelligence and Wisdom scores by 2, to a minimum of 5.

Undead Fortitude

  • When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Fragile Soul

  • When you die, your soul is torn from your body and into the hands of Orcus, and retrieving it once it is in his possession it no easy task. You cannot be revived by any spell other than Resurrection, True Resurrection or Wish.

Grave Appearance

  • Your skin, from the ends of your fingers and toes, and around your eyes, begins to grow black and cracked. This consumes your body within 1d4 days.
