# Grubdog family (and Breadbug Mimics) Grubdogs, more commonly known as Bulborbs, are the most widespread and notable species of PNF-404. With many subspecies, regional variants, and even other species mimicing their young for survival purposes, Bulborbs are a force to be reckoned with. Mammals that are featuring large, bulbous bodies with two spindly legs, two large eyestalks, and gaping mouths, Bulborbs will eat anything that they can fit in their mouths, and they will do so with a surprising ferocity. ## Breadbugs **Mimicry:** Breadbugs are their own species, and yet there exist some subspecies that almost perfectly resemble bulborbs, albeit significantly smaller versions of them. To anyone who isn't aware of their nature, they are assumed to be the bulborbs' young. These are commonly referred to as dwarf bulborbs. Regardless of what species they are mimicking, they are all always the same size. **Guard Squad:** Dwarf bulborbs always stay near their bulborb counterpart in groups of three to four, hunting together and sleeping nearby. Despite not actually being their young, the bulborbs don't seem to care, letting the dwarf bulborbs stay close. In fact, they work well together to hunt and to fend off any attackers, as dwarf bulborbs will defend their "parent" to the death. ### Dwarf Bulborb Small, red with white spots, and weak; Dwarf Bulborbs are not the most intimidating on their own, but when serving as a miniature attack force for a much larger Bulborb, they can be a much more significant threat (seen below). ### Snow Bulborb The Snow Bulborbs share the same white coloration with blue spots as the Hairy Bulborb, but are unable to mimic the hair. They still resemble the Hairy Bulborb enough to get by. ### Dwarf Orange Bulborb Resembling the more observant Orange Bulborb, the Dwarf Orange Bulborbs share the same orange coloration, black eyes, and heightened senses. ___ >## Dwarf/Snow Bulborb >*Medium Breadbug, Neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 10 (natural armor) > - **Hitpoints** 11 (2d8+2) > - **Speed** 30ft >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|14 (+2)|11 (+0)|12 (+1)|4 (-3)|8 (-1)|9 (-1)| >___ > - **Damage Vulnerabilities** Bludgeoning > - **Senses** Passive Perception 12 > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 1/4 (50 XP) > ___ > > ***Pack Tactics.*** The Dwarf Bulborb has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the Dwarf Bulborb's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. >### Actions > ***Bite.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. *Hit* 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage. ___ >## Dwarf Orange Bulborb >*Medium Breadbug, Neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 11 (natural armor) > - **Hitpoints** 11 (2d8+2) > - **Speed** 30ft >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|14 (+2)|12 (+1)|13 (+2)|4 (-3)|9 (-1)|9 (-1)| >___ > - **Damage Vulnerabilities** Bludgeoning > - **Senses** Passive Perception 16 > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 1/4 (50 XP) >___ > > ***Pack Tactics.*** The Dwarf Bulborb has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the Dwarf Bulborb's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. > > ***Observant.*** The Orange bulborb has a +5 to its passive Wisdom (Perception) and passive Intelligence (Investigation) scores. >### Actions > ***Bite.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. *Hit* 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage. \pagebreakNum ## Bulborbs Gigantic brutes with a penchant for swallowing prey whole, all sorts of different Bulborbs are spread across the planet. The one thing they all share are insatiable appetites. **Nocturnal:** Most bulborbs sleep during the day surrounded (and protected) by their band of dwarf counterparts. They have large eyes mounted on stalks to allow them to see in the darkness, but if they are woken up during the day, they are just as capable of eating whatever or whoever bothered them. **Adaptability:** There are many types of bulborbs that have evolved different traits for surviving in different climates. Some have hair to survive in snow, some are more alert to be wary around predators, and some are on fire. ### Red Bulborb The most common species of Bulborb, featuring a large red body with white spots and with matching large eyes and an even larger mouth. Red Bulborbs can be found in any temperate climate, dozing off in some clearing during the day with their entourage of Dwarf Bulborbs keeping watch, waiting until night falls to go hunting. They will use their massive size to their advantage as momentum to blunder forward into opponents, and their large, slightly-pointed maw will snap up prey very quickly. ### Hairy Bulborb Very similar to the Red Bulborb, but adapted to colder climates. The entire body is white with some blue spots, but the hide is entirely covered in long hairs, which also provide some defense in addition to warmth. They tend to stay in caves. ### Orange Bulborb The Orange Bulborb is, naturally, orange in coloration with black spots. Interestingly, the eyes are also black, with slitted pupils and bloodshot eyes. This species has the intelligence to sleep in tight quarters with its back against the wall, to prevent it from being attacked from behind while sleeping. Additionally, Orange Bulborbs are incredibly light sleepers, as they are always vigilant to passerby predators and prey, and will wake and strike very suddenly. ### Whiptongue Bulborb Whiptongue Bulborbs are the most unique-looking grub-dog. They have a white hide with brown spots and a brown head. However, they have very narrow snouts which house a long, prehensile tongue that can lash out very quickly and snap up prey from very far away. This bulborb never sleeps, which only aids it's ability for sneaking up on prey and attacking from a distance. ### Fiery Bulblax This Bulborb has the very unique trait of being on fire. It has skin glands that produce a flammable oil that burns perpetually. Due to this, it's face is a melty, horrific mess, and one of it's eyes is abnormally small. Due to this nature, the Fiery Bulblax sleeps wherever it wants with no fear of predation. ### Spotty Bulbear Arguably the most dangerous non-Elder Bulborb, the Spotty Bulbear is slightly bigger than its relatives and twice as savage (and also actually has its own young that follows it around, as opposed to the breadbug imitators of the other species). It has a black body with red spots, glowing purple eyes, and a flatter but much wider maw that spans the entire width of its body. The Spotty Bulbear never sleeps, instead constantly patrolling its territory with its young. ___ >## Red Bulborb >*Huge Grubdog, neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 14 (naural armor) > - **Hitpoints** 168 (16d12+64) > - **Speed** 40ft >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|19 (+4)|12 (+1)|18 (+4)|4 (-3)|8 (-1)|6 (-2)| >___ > - **Saving Throws** Str +6, Con +6 > - **Senses** Darkvision 90ft > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 6 (2,300 XP) >___ > > ***Fast Eater.*** The Red Bulborb can use *Swallow* as a bonus action, with the bite dealing half damage. These are some of the largest and most dangerous monsters on PNF-404, and should not be taken lightly. ### Empress Bulblax The source of all Bulborbs, the Empress Bulblax exists to produce Bulborb Larvae. They vaguely resemble Red Bulborbs, but only in the face. The rest of the body is swollen beyond recognition to form a gargantuan, egg-laying, insect-like abdomen. Their limbs are rendered useless and they can only move by rolling their body. They fashion Bulborb dens out of caves, settle in, and birth larvae, which are small, white, and limbless. Apart from producing larvae and rolling around, they don't do much. ### Emperor Bulblax The two-legged mountain, the Emperor Bulblax exists to eat smaller things. It is an intimidating creature, resembling a Bulborb only by general body shape. It possesses a huge, usually moss-covered backside and a wrinkled face with tiny eyes, suggesting that it is a very mature Bulborb. Most notably, however, is its gigantic purple tongue that can stretch far and consume anything. The Emperor Bulblax makes use of its camouflaged backside by burrowing into the ground, leaving only it exposed to not alert prey. It will burst out of the ground to strike quickly, and, if necessary, utilize its surprisingly powerful legs to hurl its massive body at an enemy, crushing it instantly. ___ >## Bulborb Larva >*Small Grubdog, neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 10 (natural armor) > - **Hitpoints** 2 (1d6-1) > - **Speed** 20ft. >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|8 (-1)|10 (+0)|9 (-1)|2 (-4)|3 (-4)|3 (-4)| >___ > - **Senses** Darkvision 90ft > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 0 (0 XP) >___ > ***Swarm.*** When at least two other Bulborb Larvae are within 5 feet and not incapacitated, the bite attack automatically hits. > >### Actions > ***Bite.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +1 to hit, reach 5 ft., *Hit* 5 (2d4) ___ >## Empress Bulblax >*Gargantuan Grubdog, neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 16 (natural armor) > - **Hitpoints** 264 (16d20+96) > - **Speed** 30ft. >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|25 (+7)|11 (+0)|23 (+6)|6 (-2)|6 (-2)|4 (-3)| >___ > - **Saving Throws** Str +9, Con +9 > - **Senses** Darkvision 90ft > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 14 (11,500 XP) >___ > > ***Hive Mother.*** Can use *Spawn* as a bonus action. >### Actions > ***Bite.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., *Hit* 16 (2d8+7) > > ***Roll.*** *Body Attack:* The Empress Bulblax rolls her body through a space that is 40ft by 40ft. Grubdog Species Though the bulborbs' large body with tiny legs and large eyes is the most easily recognizable feature of a grubdog, there exist other subspecies that appear very different, having evolved to survive in different environments. ### Water Dumple The Water Dumple has significantly fewer distinct features than its bulborb cousins. It is an amphibious dark blue mass with some tiny tentacles for locomotion and a huge mouth for consumption. It has no eyes or apparent orifices, so it is unclear how it senses its environment. Water Dumples usually lurk at the bottom of ponds in dark caves where they blend into the water, waiting for prey to wander near the water's edge when they sneak up and swallow the prey whole. ___ >## Water Dumple >*Medium Grubdog, neutral* >___ > - **Armor Class** 13 (Natural Armor) > - **Hitpoints** 78 (12d8+24) > - **Speed** 30ft. >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|16 (+3)|11 (+0)|15 (+2)|4 (-3)|6 (-2)|6 (-2)| >___ > - **Saving Throws** Str +5, Con +4 > - **Senses** Blindsense 90ft., blind beyond this radius, > - **Languages** Bulborb > - **Challenge** 1 (200 XP) >___ > > ***Terrain Camouflage.*** The Water Dumple has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in dimly lit or dark water. > > ***Amphibious.*** The Water Dumple can breathe air and water. > > ***Slippery.*** The Water Dumple has advantage on ability checks and saving throws made to escape a grapple. >### Actions > ***Bite.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., *Hit* 12 (3d4+3) piercing damage.
