Storm Chaser

A Ranger Archetype Option for the Ranger Class

Storm Chasers protect those in the path of nature's wrath. Thrill seekers at heart, these rangers love nothing more than encountering nature at its most savage and severe. Wild and unpredictable like the storms they chase, they can be seen as the most courageous or foolhardy. Regardless, one cannot deny the resolve a Storm Chaser has to plunge headlong into the howling tempest.

Storm Chaser Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Storm Chaser Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Stormbringer

At 3rd level, you learn to draw energy from the atmosphere to empower your attacks.

As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The next time you hit that creature on this turn with a weapon attack, it takes an extra 1d6 lightning or thunder damage (choose each time this ability activates) from the attack. When you reach 11th level in this class, the extra damage increases to 2d6.

When the target of your Stormbringer takes the extra damage, it can't take reactions until the start of its next turn (if you chose lightning damage), or you can push it up to 10 feet away from you in a straight line (if you chose thunder damage).

Predict Weather

At 3rd level, your connection to the weather heightens your senses to changes in the atmosphere. As an action, you accurately predict what the weather will be at your location for the next 24 hours.

Additionally, you don’t suffer disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks when your surroundings are lightly obscured by weather.

Lightning Sidestep

At 7th level, your walking speed increases by 10 feet. Additionally, whenever you succeed on a Dexterity saving throw, you can choose to immediately teleport up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see. If teleporting positions you outside the triggering area effect, you instead take no damage.

Ravaging Thunderbolt

At 11th level, your affinity with the storm deepens, amplifying your strikes. When you deal damage with your Stormbringer, the attack gains additional effects based on the damage type:

Lightning. The target’s speed is reduced by 15 feet until the start of your next turn.

Thunder. Before the target is pushed, other creatures of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of it take thunder damage equal to 2 + your Wisdom modifier.

Storm's Retort

At 15th level, when a creature that you can see hits you with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to attempt to block its attack with the might of the storm. Make a Wisdom check, adding your proficiency bonus. If the result of this roll exceeds the creature's attack roll, the attack misses you.

You can choose to use this feature after the creature makes the attack roll, but before the creature deals its damage.
