Sacred Oath

At 3rd level, a paladin gains the Sacred Oath feature. The following option is available to a paladin, in addition to the options offered in the Players Handbook.

Oath of the Martyr

There are many in the world who suffer at the hands of injustice, whether it be the choking chains of tyrants, the ripping claws of great beasts, or other kinds of pain. Those who swear the Oath of the Martyr--sometimes called holy saints--sacrifice their vitality to ease the wounds of others.

7th Healer's Sacrifice
15th Holy Barrier
20th Angelic Form

Tenets of the Martyr

The tenets of the Oath of the Martyr have been followed by many figures in various religions the world over, and while their terms may differ, they all share some common ideals.

Blood. Your flesh is worth nothing, and when it is bleeding, your soul is pure.

Sacrifice. The bodies of others cannot withstand the great wounds that yours can. Interpose yourself between your friends and your foes.

Spirit. While your body might die one day, your soul will live on forever. Inspire those around you, and through your sacrifices, let them become enlightened.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Oath of the Martyr Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work.

Oath of the Martyr Spells
Paladin Level Spells
3rd cure wounds, shield of faith
5th prayer of healing, warding bond
9th beacon of hope, life transference
13th death ward, guardian of faith
17th greater restoration, mass cure wounds

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity Options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Blood of the Martyr. As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity to bind your life force to a wiling creature within 60 feet. For the next minute, or until you end the effect (no action required), whenever that creature would take damage, you take the damage instead. Any effects from the damage, such as the movement speed reduction of ray of frost, still apply to only the initial target.

Saint of Healing. As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity to invoke a healing power of the gods. For the next minute, when you would normally roll one or more dice to restore hit points with a spell, you instead use the highest number possible for each die.

Healer's Sacrifice

Beginning at 7th level, you can channel your blood through others, restoring their life. When you restore hit points to a creature other than yourself, you can expend one of your hit dice. You roll the hit die, add your Constitution modifier to the result, and the creature restores additional hit points equal to the result.

Holy Barrier

At 15th level, a translucent shield of radiance protects you at all times. At the start of each of your turns, you gain temporary hit points equal to half of your paladin level.

Angelic Form

By 20th level, your sacrifices have made your soul divine. As an action, you can unleash this divinity, and for the next minute, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have a flying speed of 60 feet.
  • At the start of each of your turns, you regain 10 hit points.
  • When a creature within 30 feet of yourself other than you takes damage, you can use your reaction to reduce that damage to 0.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
