Wizard: School of Sympathy
Arcane Tradition
At 2nd level, a wizard gains the Arcane Tradition feature. The following option is available to a wizard, in addition to the options offered in the Player's Handbook.
School of Sympathy
The school of sympathy is based on principle that like affects like. Students of this school learn to create links between similar objects or creatures, binding the two together. The nature of these bindings can vary, allowing different effects to be transferred between the ends of these links.
Rather than focusing on a school of magic, sympathists study ways to create bindings and practice creative applications of their powers. Successful sympathists are not just powerful spellcasters but are also quick-witted and tactical, able to create bindings as needed to give them an edge.
| Wizard Level | Feature |
|---|---|
| 2nd | Sympathetic Binding, Sympathist's Pouch |
| 6th | Consanguinity |
| 10th | Spell Extension |
| 14th | Double Binding |
Sympathetic Binding
At 2nd level, you learn to create sympathetic bindings to magically link two creatures or objects together. As a bonus action, you can create a magical connection between two targets you can see within 60 feet of you. Each target can be either a creature or an object, and the targets must share some degree of similarity (for example, a boulder and a pebble, or a humanoid and a doll). The DM decides whether the targets are similar enough to create a binding.
Maintaining a sympathetic binding requires concentration, as if on a spell. A binding lasts one minute, or until one of the targets is destroyed or reduced to 0 hit points, or if you and both targets are not all on the same plane of existence. When you create a binding, choose one of the following effects.
Force. When one target moves, you can choose to have the other target move with it. Both targets move the same direction and distance. An unwilling creature can make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC to avoid being moved. While this type of binding is in effect, the weight of either target is equal to the combined weight of both. If either target is a creature, it moves as if it is carrying the other target.
Pain. As a reaction when one target takes damage, you can choose to have the other target take damage equal to half the original amount. The amount of damage dealt to the second target cannot exceed the current hit points of the first.
Dowsing. While touching one target, you know the direction to the other. You can create this type of binding even if only one target is visible.
Sympathist's Pouch
Also at 2nd level, you learn to enhance a component pouch with conjuration magic, transforming it into a sympthist's pouch. When you are carrying your sympathist's pouch, you can reach in and pull out a nonmagical inanimate object such as a twig, lump of wax, or piece of string. This object must be no larger than 6 inches on a side, weigh no more than 1 pound, and be worth no more than 1 cp. It disappears after 1 minute, or when another item is produced in this manner. This item can be produced and used as part of creating a sympathetic binding.
If you lose your sympathist's pouch, you can create a new one over the course of a long rest by enchanting a component pouch with 25 gp of materials.
Consanguinity
At 6th level, you learn to create stronger bindings using fragments of your targets. If one target of your sympathetic binding incorporates a piece of the other (for example, binding a tree to a twig from it, or adding a hair of a creature to a doll), your bindings are strengthened as described below.
Force. Creatures automatically fail their saving throw to avoid being moved. Creatures have advantage on Strength checks made to move objects linked by this binding.
Pain. The damage dealt to the second target is equal to the original damage.
Dowsing. You know both the direction and distance to the other target. You can create this type of binding even if only one target is visible and within range.
Spell Extension
Beginning at 10th level, you learn to channel your spells through sympathetic bindings, extending their range. When you cast a wizard spell with a range greater than self, both targets of your sympathetic binding are considered within range of the spell as long as at least one target is within its normal range and the other is within 120 feet of you.
Double Binding
Starting at 14th level, you can maintain two simultaneous bindings. You cannot have more than one binding of a given type between the same two targets. If your concentration is broken, both bindings end.
