These wondrous artifacts are the collected notes of a long-dead subject matter expert. When you make an appropriate skill check, you can spend 1 minute consulting the notebook. You gain a bonus to your check equal to 1d4-1, representing how much the book had to say about the topic of your check.
You can spend a week of downtime to increase the die size to a d6, then two more weeks of downtime to increase it to a d8, then three more weeks to increase it to a d10, and four more weeks to increase it to a d12.
