# Wizard: Academic ## Arcane Tradition: Academic The following Arcane Tradition is available for selection at 2nd level in addition to the others available in the *Player's Handbook*. ### Academic Some Wizards use magic as an amplifier, they use it to enhance and expand their already generous amounts of knowledge. They stand as scholars foremost, and wizards secondly. With knowledge of almost everything mundane or magical and the power to take it to further heights, they pride themselves as the brightest of their age, prepared to challenge any others that test their knowledge and mental prowess. | Wizard Level | Feature | |:---:|:-----------:| | 2nd | Magical Skills, Tome of Talents | | 6th | Twisting Retort | | 10th | Expertise Inscriptions | | 14th | Unbounded Smarts | #### Magical Skills You can tap into the weave in order to temporarily expand your knowledge and abilities. Whenever you make a non-Strength ability check, you can spend a spell slot to boost your roll. You roll and add 1d4 to the check per level of the spell slot expended (Ex. Add 2d4 with a 2nd level slot). You can use this feature after the check is made but before the outcome is determined You have a number of uses of this feature equal to your Intelligence modifier. You regain all uses on a long rest. #### Tome of Talents Starting at 2nd level, you can inscribe methods and techniques for skills into your spellbook. You can converse with someone on a skill they have expertise or proficiency in and take notes on that skill. Proficiency can be inscribed with 2 hours in conversation, 4 hours of practice, and 50 GP for inks and otherwise used in the process of writing. Expertise can be inscribed if the other person has it in that skill, taking 5 hours of conversation and an additional 100 GP. You automatically have 3 proficiencies written into your spellbook when you gain this feature. Skills inscribed in your spellbook are not automatically added to your proficiencies, instead you can prepare them at the end of each long rest, same as spells are. To prepare proficiency, you must give up preparing one spell that you normally could. To prepare expertise you must give up 2 normal preparation slots. Expertises can be prepared as proficiencies instead, with the cost reducing to one preparation as a result. \columnbreak #### Twisting Retort Starting at 6th level, you become an expert in outsmarting and staying one step ahead of your fellow spellcasters. You add *Counterspell* to your spellbook if it is not there already. When you cast *Counterspell* you can make an Intelligence check if you successfully have countered the spell. The DC is equal to 11 + the spell's level. On a success, you can change the target of the spell. On a failure, the spell is instead cast as it was intended, uncountered. #### Expertise Inscriptions Starting at 10th level, you can begin the process of refining and improving the techniques written in your spellbook. You can use 200 GP and 8 hours for additional research and study, you can change one proficiency in your spellbook into an expertise of the same skill. In addition, you can speedily alter your prepped spells or proficiencies. During a short rest, you can swap up to 4 spells or proficiencies with others (expertises cannot be be swapped during a short rest). #### Unbounded Smarts Your pursuit of greater mental prowess has paid off, as you can now prepare an additional number of spells or proficiencies each day equal to your proficiency bonus.
