Spells for the survivor

It is said heroes are forged through trial, with the greatest being etched in tales bards will sing for ages to come. Godrick Ogrefoot, Raya Godeater, Eldrin the Untouchable. These heroes have but one thing in common: they're all dead. Instead, here are a few spells to give the average expendable adventurer(ie, you) the tools to survive. Don't be a hero. Save a life.

Breathing Ring

2nd-level abjuration (ritual)

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M (up to three chokers worth at least 20 gp each, which each target must wear for the duration)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour

This spell wards up to three willing creatures you touch until the spell ends. While the creatures are wearing the choker, they are immune to to the Paralyzed and Poisoned conditions. Furthermore, they may breathe in harmful gasses normally.

Glass Guardians

4th-level conjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: Self
  • Components: V, S, M (glass mirror worth at least 50 gp)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Three iridescent panes of light appear and orbit around you until the spell ends. Each pane of light grants a target a cumulative +1 bonus to AC for the duration of the spell. You can use a bonus action to send one or more of these units in range towards a creature or object within 60 feet of you. When you do so, the panes orbit the target, granting them the bonus to AC instead.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot 5th level or higher, the number of units summoned increases by 1 for each slot level above 4th.

Instant Aegis

3rd-level evocation

  • Casting Time: 1 reaction
  • Range: 30 feet
  • Components: V, S, M (30 gp of crushed agate)
  • Duration: 1 round

An invisible wall of force springs into existence at a point you choose within range. It appears as a flat surface as a 5-foot-by-5-foot panel. The wall functions identically to a Wall of Force, but can't be formed into a hemispherical dome or sphere.

If the wall cuts between a creature and an attack or spell, the triggering attack or spell is stopped by the wall and deals no damage to that creature.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you create an additional panel. The panels do not need to be contiguous with each other.

Rebound

2nd-level abjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you are hit by an attack
  • Range: Self
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: Instantaneous

A shimmering field of energy appears and protects you from the triggering attack. The attack deals no damage. The creature that triggered the attack takes 4d4 force damage as energy rebounds into their body.

Spell Eater

6th-level abjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 reaction
  • Range: 30 feet
  • Components: V, S, M (finely crafted bellows)
  • Duration: 1 minute

You open your mouth towards a creature in the process of casting a spell. If the spell is 6th level or lower, energy from it is drawn towards your open mouth before disappearing seamlessly into it. The targeted spell fails for the time being, having no effect for the duration of your spell.

If the spell is 7th level or higher, make an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level. On a successful check, the spell is eaten.

At the end of this spell's duration, the eaten spell activates with you as the target. If the eaten spell has an area of effect you count as the center or origin of the target area.

Swordcatcher

3rd-level abjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take upon being damaged by a melee attack made with a weapon
  • Range: Self
  • Components: S
  • Duration: Instantaneous

A shimmering force appears as you are hit, catching the weapon in response. You can then throw the caught weapon 60 feet in any direction, dealing 4d8 damage to each creature in that line.
