# Artificer Subclass - Gadgeteer ## Introduction There's going to be some descriptive text here, but we're all about area of effect spells and zapping a group of people all at once. It's primarily a blaster caster. the basic build doesn't have a ton of AOE, so I figured this could be a good chance to experiment. The subclass is tied to a created device, which only you can use, but this is as an alternative to the pets in the two existing UA subclasses. Inspiring characters: E.Gadd (*Luigi's Mansion*), Egon Spengler (*Ghostbusters*), Rocket (*Guardians of the Galaxy*).- /u/diagnosisninja, V1.0 ### 3rd Level #### Gadgeteer spells Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Gadgeteer Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare. |Spell Level|Spells known| |---|---| |1st|*Faerie Fire, Fog Cloud*| |2nd|*Shatter, Web*| |3rd|*Fireball, Slow*| |4th|*Confusion, Vitriolic Sphere*| |5th|*Dawn, Synaptic Static*| #### Tools of the Trade By the time you adopt this specialty at 3rd level, you’re deeply familiar with employing its tools.
**Proficiencies**: You gain proficiency with jewellers tools and potters tools, assuming you don’t already have them. You also gain those tools for free — the result of tinkering you’ve done as you’ve prepared for this specialization.
**Crafting**: You can create one-use devices, based on your Artificer spells. If you do, it takes a quarter of the normal time and half as much of the usual gold. You can use any tools you are proficient with to create them, but the devices follow the rules for spell scrolls as a consumable.
#### Improvised Device Starting at 3rd level, you can create a temporary magic item out of common materials as part of a long rest. Only you can use this device. Describe the item and its mechanisms. As long as you possess the item, it can modify how you can cast spells, and you can use it as a spellcasting focus. While you have the improvised device, your spells range is extended by 10 feet. This doesn't affect self-targeting spells, but can apply to targeted spells with a range of touch. This range increases by 5 feet at 6th and 14th level.
If you cast a cantrip with your action using the improvised device, you can cast the same cantrip as a bonus action. You can then reset this function by spending a bonus action on a future turn.
### 6th Level #### Spell Diffuser When you reach 6th level, you modify your device so that it can adapt how you can cast spells with an area of effect. When you cast an area of effect spell you can choose to modify it with one of the below options, and roll a d20. If you roll a 1, the feature cannot be used until you repair it at the end of a long rest. You gain the below options: ||| |---|---| |**Volley**: Increase the radius or length of the effect by 5 feet. Reduce the damage dice size of any effects in the spell by 1 increment (minimum of d4).| |**Focus Fire**: Reduce the radius or length of the effect by 5 feet. Increase the damage dice size of any effects in the spell by 1 increment (maximum of D12). This option cannot be used if it would reduce the area of effect to 0.| #### Device Triggers Methods When you reach 6th level, you can create your one-use devices with a timer or remote trigger. If you do, you must spend the normal amount of gold for the device. Any spell cast in either of these ways is centered on the device when it activates, and it takes an action to place a device. You can still use these devices without the below options in the usual fashion.
You can disarm these devices, or provide information to other people on how to do so. They can also be disarmed by taking an action to make an Investigation (INT) against your spellcasting DC. ||| |---|---| |**Timer**: A timed device duration is measured in rounds. Specify this when the device is placed and start the clock! Time must run out for the spell to cast.| |**Remote**: A remote trigger has a maximum range of 100 feet, and the trigger is part of your improvised device. You can activate the device as an action. | ### 14th Level #### Minor Spell-Storing Device Once you reach 14th level, whenever you finish a long rest, choose one cantrip from the artificer spell list, or a 1st or 2nd level spell from your list of artificer spells. You can imbue your improvised device with this spell, and you can cast it with your spellcasting modifier while you have your improvised device. You can cast a cantrip any number of times. You can cast a spell without using a spell slot a number of times equal to your Intelligence bonus (minimum once).
