Artificer Specialist

Threadspinner

A Threadspinner specializes in the craft and manipulation of fibers and silks as magical conduits, capable of manipulating the flow of positive and negative energy. Artificers of this subclass use their finely animated strands to weave a battlefield tapestry of their own design, focused on control instead of firepower.

Tools Proficiency

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with weaver's tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan's tools of your choice.

Threadspinner Spells

Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Threadspinner Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Artificer Level Spells
3rd inflict wounds, ensnaring strike
5th hold person, mind spike*
9th life transference*, vampiric touch
13th blight, grasping vine
17th danse macabre*, hold monster

Spells marked with * are found in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

Prehensile Textiles

At 3rd level, you learn how to create thread imbued with positive energy drawn from your own essence to animate them with life and manipulate them as an extension of your body.

Whenever you finish a long rest and your Weaver's Tools are with you, you can create a number of spools of this prehensile thread equal to your Intelligence modifier + half your artificer level, rounded down (minimum of one). These spools will lose their connection to you when you finish your next long rest, but so long as you have your Weaver's Tools you can simply imbue them again.

So long as they are on your person (not necessarily in hand), each spool's thread can be used in one of three ways:

  • You can use a thread to deliver a spell with a range of touch, or a melee spell attack granted by a spell you have cast on yourself, to a range of 10 feet.
  • You can use a thread in place of a hand to initiate and maintain a grapple. As an action, you can perform a grapple up to a range of 10 feet, making an Intelligence (Weaver's Tools) check in place of Strength (Athletics). You also make an Intelligence (Weaver's Tools) check in place of Strength (Athletics) when a creature you are grappling in this manner attempts to escape the grapple with a contested ability check.
  • You can use a thread to trip a creature, which functions as a shove. As an action, you can perform a shove up to a range of 10 feet, making an Intelligence (Weaver's Tools) check in place of Strength (Athletics).

After the spell effect has been delivered, the grapple has ended, or the shove attempt has been made, that spool's thread is left unwound and unusable until you finish a short rest.

Rapid Spinner

Starting at 5th level, you can grapple or shove twice, instead of once, with your prehensile thread as an action on your turn.

Conductive Weave

Beginning at 9th level, you can more efficiently channel your spells through your prehensile thread. When you cast a spell with a range of touch, you can deliver it to multiple targets by expending an additional spell slot of the same level or higher per additional target. In the case of a cantrip, you do not need to expend any spell slots. The targets of the spell must either be willing or grappled by your magical thread and must be within 10 feet of you. If the spell requires an attack, you make separate attack rolls for each target.

Once you have used this feature, you can not use it again until you've finished a short or long rest.

Custom Tailoring

At 15th level, your mastery over your prehensile thread allows you to effectively bind creatures much larger than yourself. You can use your prehensile thread to grapple creatures that are larger than one size category larger than you. Doing so requires extra time and material, however. You can not perform another grapple or shove with the same action as would otherwise be granted by your Rapid Spinner feature, and you must use a spool of thread for each size category larger than you your target is.
