Vesperti

Physical Traits

Vesperti, or Batfolk, are a race of humanoids with partly vestigial wings, thin fur, large leafy ears, and squat noses. They live in the Underdark or inside of large cave networks in high mountains.
Vesperti have large and tightly-knit families, and litters of children are born roughly a dozen at once. They rely heavily on eachother for protection, and if caught on their own, tend to resort to hiding as their dark fur lets them blend in to their cavernous environment.

Society

Vesperti culture places emphasis on stories as a method of catalogueing information, whether it is for edification, forwarning, or purely entertainment. The Vesperti respond to word-of-mouth and recordings, being an especially aurally sensitive people.

Names

Vesperti communicate using squeaks and high-pitched screeches that are outside the range of what most humanoids can hear. When speaking common, they will adapt a nickname attached to some quirk or behavior.
Some examples are:
Blossom, Breeze, Brightfang, Bristle, Clinger, Dart, Flitter, Flowerkeep, Leafear, Longsong, Redmaw, Scratch, Sanguin, Shadow, Twitch, Whisper

Echolocation

Vesperti depend on sonic vibrations in their environment, rather than their sense of sight. You have Blindsight with a range of 30 feet, and your vision only extends to 60 feet.
You have advantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing, and disadvantage on Perception checks that rely on sight.

Variants

There are two subraces of Vesperti:

  • Aerial Vesperti
  • Sonic Vesperti

Choose 1 when you create your Vesperti character.

Aerial Vesperti

You have adapted to be especially mobile. You rely on your wings and climbing to navigate and perform complex aerial maneuvers.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity increases by an additional 1 point, up to +2.

Fanged Maw

Your needle-like fangs are a natural weapon, which you can use to make an unarmed strike. You deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 plus your strength modifier, instead of the typical bludgeoning damage for unarmed strikes.

Strong Wings

You can use your especially developed wings to glide. Gliding allows up to 30 feet of flight, but you cannot fly upwards with this trait. If you glide less than 15 feet on your turn, you begin falling.

  • When you reach level 3, once per turn, you can make a high-jump by flapping your wings mid-glide.

  • When you reach level 6, you have mastered the use of your wings. You have a normal flying speed of 30 feet.

Sonic Vesperti

You have an uncanny ability to manipulate sound. Your knowldege and skill grants you innate spell-like abilities.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom increases by an additional 1 point, up to +2.

Improved Echolocation

When you reach level 5, your Blindsight is extended to 60 feet.

Sonic Spellcasting

You know the Thunderclap cantrip.

  • When you reach level 3, you learn Thunderwave, and can cast it twice per long rest without expending a spell slot.

  • When you reach level 6, you learn Silence, and can cast it once per long rest without expending a spell slot.

Wisdom is you spellcasting ability for this trait.
