Druid Circle

At 2nd level, a druid gains the Druid Circle feature. The following options are available to a druid, in addition to those offered in the Player's Handbook: the Circle of the Sun.

Circle of the Sun

Druids of the Circle of the Sun live in adoration of the Green. In forests, gardens, and jungles, these druids both cultivate and venerate the sun's gift of plant life.

Druids of this circle can be as unique and fickle as the myriad of flowers, fruits, and trees they cherish. In brightest day, they can grow tall and confident. In darkest night, they can wilt away and sulk. Despite how they vary, these druids are often found to embody the sincerity and generosity that plants display. However, woe to those who desecrate the Green: Roses always bear thorns.

Circle of the Sun Features
Spell Level Spells
2nd Bloom, Firmly Planted
6th Benevolent Bloom
10th Perennial Holophyte
14th Witherless

Bloom

At 2nd level, you gain the ability to surround yourself with blooms of magical flowers by chanting a joyous hymn called a canticle. Each canticle celebrates a given flower, and its bestowed effects are emblematic and unique to that flower. When you gain this feature, you learn two Bloom options of your choice (see "Bloom Options" below).

As an action, you can expend one use of your Wild Shape feature to activate a Bloom option, rather than assuming a beast form.

You gain an additional Bloom option of your choice when you reach certain levels in this class: 6th, 10th, and 14th level. Each time you learn a new Bloom option, you can also replace one Bloom option you know with a different one.

Firmly Planted

At 2nd level, you can use roots that extend from your feet to fortify yourself for an incoming attack. As a bonus action, if you stand on solid ground, you can ingrain roots that extend from your feet. Until the start of your next turn, you have a +2 bonus to AC and +4 bonus Strength saving throws. You can use this bonus action only if you haven’t moved during this turn, and after you use the bonus action, your speed is 0 until start of your next turn.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once) and regain expended uses when you finish a short or long rest.

Benevolent Bloom

At 6th level, the scent of your blooms inspire both you and nearby allies. Whenever you chant a Bloom canticle, you and each allied creature within 5 feet of you gains temporary hit points equal to your druid level.

Perennial Holophyte

Starting at 10th level, you develop a plant-like integument capable of photosynthesis. If you spend at least 1 hour in the sunlight and have access to potable water, you do not need to eat to survive.

Additionally, you become proficient in Constitution saving throws and gain resistance to poison damage.

Witherless

At 14th level, your blooms help you defy even the most of dire situations. If you drop to 0 hit points and don't die outright, you can immediately expend one use of Bloom to drop to 1 hit point instead, in addition to the effects of the Bloom option you choose.

Additionally, you suffer none of the drawbacks of old age, and you can't be aged magically.

Bloom Options

The Bloom feature lets you choose options for it at certain levels. The options are presented here in alphabetical order. They are all magical effects and require an action to perform.

If a canticle has a prerequisite, you must meet it to learn the canticle. You can learn the canticle at the same time that you meet its prerequisite. A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class.

Canticle of the Bougainvillea

Prerequisite: thorn whip cantrip

Your thorn whip becomes a bougainvillea vine impregnated with a pruritic poison. For 1 minute, you deal an extra 1d6 poison damage to a target whenever you hit it using the cantrip thorn whip. The target must also succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC, or it has disadvantage on the next weapon attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.

Canticle of the Camellia

The scent of young camellias rouses vigilance in you and an ally. You gain a +5 bonus the next time you roll initiative and a +10 bonus on your next Wisdom (Perception) roll. As a part of activating this Bloom option, you can also touch one other creature and grant it the same effects.

Canticle of the Carnation

Your carnations amplify compassionate healing. For 1 minute, whenever you roll healing using a spell, you can reroll any roll of 1 or 2 on the dice, but you must use the new roll, even if it is another 1 or 2.

Canticle of the Chrysanthemum

During a short or long rest, you brew a fortifying tea of chrysanthemum florets and ten goodberries. At the start of the rest, you cast the spell goodberry as a part of this canticle without expending a spell slot. Choose up to three creatures to brew this tea for. Drinking this tea increases a creature's hit point maximum and current hit points by a number equal to your Wisdom modifier, and nourishes to sustain a creature for one day. These benefits last for 24 hours.

On a successful hit, you can expend a druid spell slot to deal an extra 1d8 slashing damage to the target, plus another 1d8 per level of the spell slot.

Canticle of the Lavender

You encircle yourself with a welcoming aura that smells of fresh lavender. The aura extends 5 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover. It lasts for 1 hour or until your concentration ends (as if you were concentrating on a spell). You can dismiss it as a bonus action.

You send a nimbus of lilies to safeguard an ally from death. You cast the spell death ward as a part of this canticle without expending a spell slot.

Canticle of the Magnolia

Prerequisite: 14th level

Woody vines twist to engulf your form, transforming you into a large magnolia tree that sheds magical petals. You gain 10 temporary hit points per druid level and a vulnerability to fire damage, your speed is reduced to 0, and you are incapacitated. For as long as you are in this form, the ground within 30 feet of you is difficult terrain for your enemies.

When any ally starts their turn within 30 feet of you, the petals you shed heal that ally for a number of hit points equal to half your druid level. This has no effect on a creature that has half or more of its hit points, and it has no effect on undead and constructs.

When any enemy starts their turn within 30 feet of you, that creature must succeed on a Strength or Dexterity saving throw (its choice) or be restrained by the tree's vines. While restrained by the vines, the creature repeats the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. On a success, it frees itself and the vines vanish from it.

These effects effects last for 10 minutes or until you lose all these temporary hit points.

The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC, or it can’t take reactions until the end of its next turn. On its turn, the target can’t move, and it uses its action to make a melee or ranged attack against a randomly determined creature within range. If the target can’t attack, it does nothing on its turn.

Canticle of the Orchid

Prerequisite: charm person spell

A bouquet of orchids gives makes your allure irresistible. You cast the spell charm person as a part of this canticle without expending a spell slot. The creature you attempt to charm makes its saving throw against you with disadvantage. If you or your companions are fighting it, it still makes its saving throw with advantage.

Canticle of the Peony

Prerequisite: 6th level

Briefly surrounded by a flurry of peonies, you teleport yourself to an unoccupied space you can see within 60 feet. You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed what you can carry.

You can also teleport one willing creature of your size or smaller who is carrying gear up to its carrying capacity. The creature must be within 5 feet of you when you cast this spell, and there must be an unoccupied space within 5 feet of your destination space for the creature to appear in; otherwise, the creature is left behind.

Canticle of the Ranunculus

  • You can use the thorn whip to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial. The thorn whip can't activate magic items or carry more than 10 pounds.
  • You can stow one object the hand is holding in a container worn or carried by another creature.

The poison damage increases to 4d10 when you reach 14th level in this class.

Creating a Canticle

As a druid of the Circle of the Sun, your choice of flower to celebrate is special and deeply personal. When you learn or replace a Bloom option at 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 14th level, you can choose to create a canticle and use it instead of the ones listed above.

Choose one spell from any class, including this one, that you feel is emblematic to the flower you wish to celebrate. Your spell of choice may have meaning in floriography or have cultural or personal significance. At 2nd level, the spell you choose can be of 1st level or a cantrip. The spell you choose can be of higher level when you reach higher druid levels: 2nd level or lower at 6th level, 4th level or lower at 10th level, and 6th level or lower at 14th level. Your Bloom canticle is then casting this spell as an action without expending a spell slot or material components. If the spell requires components that are consumed, those materials are still required to cast the spell.

For example, you might choose to celebrate the daisy. Instead of symbolizing innocence and love, you may focus on the daisy as an expression of dissembling or disguise, like in the play Hamlet. Choosing disguise self would be appropriate for a druid of 2nd level or higher.
