School of Arcana

While most wizards dedicate their focus to the study of a single school of magic, you have decided to take on a more generalist approach. Your studies focus more on the history and application of magic and its practical use in real world scenarios. This knowledge allows you to better understand magic from sources other than your own, and to use this to improve the effectiveness of your own practice.

School of Arcana Features
Level Feature
2nd efficient learning, arcane prodigy
6th practical spellcasting, ritual researcher
10th improved potency
14th arcane reclamation

Efficient Learning

Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold you must spend to copy a wizard spell into your spellbook is halved.

Arcane Prodigy

Also at 2nd level, you have been able to sculpt your own set of spells whose effects mimic those historically used by other casters.

Select two cantrips from any class's spell list, including this one. You learn the selected cantrips, which don't count towards your total cantrips known, and the selected cantrips count as wizard spells for you.

Practical Spellcasting

Starting at 6th level your general knowledge of magic allows you to be more efficient with the use of material components, either by substituting cheaper alternatives or simply reducing the amounts required.

You can reduce the gold cost of the material components required by your wizard spells by an amount equal to either 10 times your wizard level or half the initial material cost, whichever is less.

Ritual Researcher

Also at 6th level you can copy any spell into your spellbook that has the ritual tag on it, even if it is not normally a wizard spell.

In order to copy a ritual spell into your spellbook that is not normally a wizard spell you must spend 4 hours and 100 gp per level of the spell, as you need to not only acquaint yourself with the spell but also carefully study and create a substitute for the source of its magic. Nevertheless, the spell then becomes a wizard spell for you.

Improved Potency

At 10th level you can apply your research to slightly increase the potency of your learned spells.

When you cast a wizard spell of 1st level or higher you can add your Intelligence modifier to a single damage roll or roll made to determine how many hit points of creatures the spell can affect (such as by the sleep and color spray spells).

Arcane Reclamation

At 14th level you can contain the residual magic from your most powerful spells to reuse at a later time. After you use a spell slot to cast a wizard spell of 6th level or higher you can recover one of your spent spell slots of a lower level. The level of the recovered spell slot must not be higher than the spell's level minus 4.

For example, if you cast a wizard spell as a 7th level spell you can recover a spent spell slot of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level.
