Way of the Draconic Soul

Some monks gain their powers and prowess from teachers. Some from inner searching and training to perfect their bodies. Some by channeling powers above or within. The Way of the Draconic Soul is for monks who wish to embody the aspects of Draconic heritage they either possess by virtue of birth, or wish to possess by rigurous training.

Aspect of the Dragon

At 3rd level, as you awaken your draconic heritage, part of your skin is covered by a thin sheen of dragon-like scales, and your senses become more keen. You gain +2 to your passive Perception as long as you are not blinded, deafened or incapacitated.

Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. The damage type associated with each dragon is used by features you gain later. In addition, you learn to read, write and speak Draconic.

Devour Elements

Starting at 3rd level, when you are targeted by an effect of the same element as your draconic heritage's element, you can consume the element of the attack as a reaction, negating 1d10 + your Wisdom modifier + your monk level of the damage. In addition, you can spend 1 ki point to make a ranged attack to spit the energy back at a target within 20 ft. for 1d10 element damage.

Draconic Strike

At 6th level you gain the power to emulate the breath weapon of your draconic heritage.

As an action, at the cost of 2 ki points, you can exhale destructive energy of the element that you chose as your heritage. The type of breath weapon is linked to your choice, as displayed in the table. The DC for the save is 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Wis Bonus. A creature takes 2d4 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage die is linked to your Martial Arts damage die and increases as it does.

At level 11, you've learned to channel more power into your roar, and can add your wisdom modifier to the damage and may use Dragon Roar once with no ki cost per short rest.

Note: If you already have a breath weapon from your racial features, you can use this to improve the damage it causes by adding this feature to it for 3 ki points instead of 2.

Dragon Hide

Starting at 6th level, you gain resistance to your chosen element, and your chosen elemental damage ignores a target's resistance. At level 11, you can turn a target's immunity to your element into resistance.

Draconic Presence

At 11th level, you gain the ability to sprout a pair of dragon wings from your back using your parents element, gaining a 40 foot flying speed. You can create these wings as a bonus action on your turn. They last for one minute or until you dismiss them as a bonus action on your turn. You can't manifest your wings while wearing armor unless the armor is made to accommodate them, and clothing not made to accommodate your wings might be destroyed when you manifest them.

On the turn you sprout the wings, you can spend 4 ki points to channel the dread presence of your dragon parent, causing those around you to become charmed or frightened. As an action, you can exude an aura of awe or fear (your choice) to a distance of 60 feet. For 1 minute, each hostile creature that starts its turn in this aura must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed (if you chose charm) or frightened (if you chose fear) until the aura ends. A creature that succeeds on this saving throw is immune to your
aura for 24 hours.

Alternatively, you can spend 2 ki points to unleash a breath weapon attack as an action once during your transformation. Damage type and shape are determined by your heritage, and damage is 2x your martial arts damage die.

Awaken the Dragon

At 17th level, you are able to draw on the full power of a dragon temporarily. As a bonus action, you may spend 4 ki points to channel your Draconic Heritage. This effect lasts for 2 minutes, until you are reduced to 0 Hit Points or until you dismiss it and grants you the following benefits:

  • Your AC increases by 5.
  • You gain the ability to use a breath weapon as an action. Damage type and shape are determined by your Heritage, damage is 2x your martial arts damage die.
  • When you hit a target with a unarmed strike that target takes extra damage equal your Martial Arts damage die.

Immediately after this transformation ends, you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion as your body was pushed past it's limit. Once you use this feature, you can not use it again until you finish a short rest.

Heavily inspired by the Dragon Slayer, a Monk-variant class. I wanted to make a monk subclass based off of it to make sure it was more balanced for actual use.
