## Arach I MET AN ARACH CLAN BACK IN MY ADVENTURING _days, and, by all that I've forged, I could tell you that those arach are fierce. I s'pose it mustn't come from all the hate and fear the common folk feel for 'em. 'Least, that's all what I heard, so, don't go telling or I'll end up with an arach dart in me neck!_
--- Borgden Boneshaft, Dwarven Thane.
The descendants of ancient nobles cursed for their ways of intrigue and political web-laying, the arach are a drider-like people whose appearance combines the lower body of a spider with a humanoid, but spider-like, upper body. Fearful that they will be persecuted by others, arach live in xenophobic conclaves, and stalk deep warrens and sunless woods alike, avoiding all others. ### Tight-Knit Clans Most arach spend their lives living in a small clan and never leaving the clan's controlled territory, content to perform their duties so that the entire clan may yet live another day.
But, sometimes, whether it is an individual choice, or the will of the clan leaders, an arach will leave the clan's domain to explore the world outside. Some do so for adventure or glory, and others do so in order to save their. Some might have even been driven out of their clan and exiled for a crime or other misdeed. Regardless of why an arach leaves the clan,
they usually have no knowledge of customs besides those of their own clan, even when among other arach. ### Clan Specialty Each arach clan, by necessity, specializes in one craft, fighting style, or spellcasting type that is accessible in the clan's area. One clan might have extensive knowledge of poisons while another could specialize in weaving tapestries, clothing, and other items.
An arach clan's specialty depends on where it's domain is, the local resources available, and the practicality of spending clan time and resources on pursuing the specialty. ### Arach Silk Like spiders, arach produce a natural material that is referred to as silk. In this case, it is Arach Silk.
arach use their arach Silk to weave clothing, create cloths and armor, build rafts and buildings, and tie large objects or creatures together. Like spider silk, arach Silk is incredibly strong, despite its thin, filmy appearance, and is prized by merchants. Some arach clans offer their arach Silk to others in exchange for food or goods that they cannot make themselves. ### Decentralized Religion arach do not worship one deity or a set of common deities. Instead, individual clans worship different deities, forces, philosophies, or entities that depend on the clan's location, history, and traditions.
One arach clan might worship nature in the way that Druidism espouses, while another clan could be devoted to a human-worshiped deity common in the clan's region. Some clans might even worship nothing more than an ideal; such as expansion or seclusion. ### Feared by Others arach, because of their appearance and mannerisms, are often shunned or hunted in humanoid settlements. arach who venture out of their clans risk violence and mistreatment at the hands of frightened humanoids in most towns, cities, and villages they visit.
This affects individual arach differently. Some become bitter, cursing humanoids as fools and inferior beings, while others strive to prove themselves to the fearful humanoids they encounter.
arach adventurers tend to travel with other outcasts and other Large creatures if they can. ### Sedentary Communities Because most arach clans lay claim to only a small domain, and never allow developing arach to explore outside of the clan's boundaries, many arach grow up with a faulty idea of how large the world is, and might complain if forced to walk more than a few dozen miles away from their most recent \pagebreakNum
place of rest, inn, or residence. In general, although they are usually athletic, arach have poor endurance when it comes to prolonged travel, and are likely to become unsettled when they learn how massive the world truly is. ### Arach Personality You can use the Arach Quirks table to determine a unique personality quirk for your arach character or to inspire a mannerism or clan custom. | d8 | Quirk | |:---:|:-----------:| | 1 | You click your teeth and tongue as if they were the mandibles of a spider, and you expect non-arach to understand the subtle emotions that you're trying to convey. | | 2 | You gratefully devour any enemies you kill. Who knows when your next chance to eat will arise? | | 3 | You don't understand what alcohol is, no matter how many times someone tries to explain it to you. | | 4 | You fear arcane spellcasters, and ingratiate yourself before them to avoid their wrath.| | 5 | You refuse to wear anything on your head or hands. | | 6 | You eat insects where you find them, to the disgust of those around you. | | 7 | You object to anyone doing harm to an arachnid. | | 8 | You are puzzled by the fact that most humanoids can't climb upside down on ceilings. | ### Arach Names Arach have no general names. Their names and naming conventions vary wildly by region and clan. The arach in an Elven forest might take on Elven names, while arach from subterranean caverns beneath the sea might have names developed from an ancient language, supplemented by Undercommon. Work with your DM to determine a name that is appropriate to your arach clan. ### Arach Traits As an Arach, you have certain traits in common with your accursed brethren.

You can carry up to two Medium creatures, four Small creatures, or eight Tiny creatures on your back with no ill effect.
If, for example, you wish to carry multiple different-sized creatures on your back, use the following method to determine how many creatures can mount you:
Your carrying capacity as a mount has a value of 1, and Medium and smaller creatures have values of 0.5 (Medium), 0.25 (Small), and 0.125 (Tiny) respectively.
As long as the number value of creatures riding you does not exceed one, you can carry the passengers. - You can only ride creatures size Huge and larger as mounts.
**_Spin Arach Silk._** As an arach, you are able to produce a substance known as Arach Silk, which is similar to spider silk from your body. As an action, you can produce up to 50 feet of Arach Silk from your body. This length of Arach Silk functions identically to a silk rope (see the "Equipment" section of the _Player's Handbook_). Once you use this ability, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Silk, even among other arach. Not only can weaver arach produce more Arach Silk from their bodies than most arach, they can shape it into the form of a web almost instantaneously. In addition, when you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to cast _web_ once as an action, without expending a spell slot or material components. When you reach 5th level, you can cast web three times using this ability, instead of once. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells. #### Venom Arach Venom arach compensate for their poor web-weaving skills with deadly, innate venom that they can use to paralyze their prey. Furthermore, you have the ability to produce a substance known as Arach Venom, which is detailed below, as an action.
Once you produce Arach Venom using this ability, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest. You can produce enough Arach Venom to coat one weapon or 5 pieces of ammunition as an action. If you don't use the Arach Venom produced within 1 hour of making it, it loses its effect. Arach Venom is detailed below:
##### Arach Venom _Injury_
When a weapon or piece of ammunition coated with your Arach Venom hits a target, the target takes additonal poison damage equal to your Constitution modifier. The Arach Venom applied to the weapon or piece of ammunition then becomes dilute, and loses its effect.
