Way of the Thundering Sky

Monks of the Way of the Thundering Sky are said to be heralds of coming storms and defenders of the defenseless. They teach the importance of weathering life's storms and value things such as honor, justice, and oaths kept. As they uphold these values, support others through hardship, and hone their techniques, they shorten the spiritual gap between themselves and their divinity. The subject of their reverence is the god of storms, who began the tradition and first taught how to harness and manipulate the electrical energies within, and around, ones body in order to become a destructive force rivaling that of nature.

Drums of War

You gain proficiency with the drum. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of musical instrument of your choice.

Flash and Thunder

At 3rd level, you learn the following Thundering Sky Techniques:

Flash Engagement. You know the lightning lure cantrip and can spend 1 ki point to cast it in place of a normal attack. You can use this technique only once per turn.

Thundering Palm. You can spend 2 ki points to cast the thunderwave spell without any spell components as a bonus action. You can choose to center the spell on yourself, and you cannot damage yourself with this spell. Upon casting this spell, the exact location of each creature within 60 ft. of you is revealed to you until the end of your turn.

You can spend additional ki points to cast thunderwave as a higher level spell. Each additional ki point you spend increases the spell's level by 1. The maximum number of ki points that you can spend on the spell equals half your monk level.

Gathering Storm

When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your skin begins to ripple with lightning which can be used to aid you in combat. Whenever you hit a creature with two consecutive attacks as part of the same action (such as the Attack action once you have Extra Attack) or bonus action (such as with Flurry of Blows), you gain a static charge. While you have at least 1 static charge, you can change the damage type of your melee weapon attacks to lightning. You can also spend static charges to fuel your Thundering Sky Techniques as if they were ki points. All of your static charges dissipate after 1 minute has passed without gaining a new one. You can have a maximum number of static charges equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1).

Lightning Warrior

At 6th level, you learn the following Thundering Sky Techniques:

Pierce the Clouds. If there are clouds, you can spend 1 minute in meditation to cause them to split open and begin to rain. Rain does not obscure your vision. While in rain, you can see as if it were day.

Ride the Lightning. Whenever you deal lightning damage, you can choose to ride the lightning. If you do so, you teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the target that took lightning damage. You can use this technique only once per turn.

Static Ki Wave. You can blast a distant target with a bolt of electric infused ki energy in place of a normal attack. Make a special ranged attack targeting a creature within 30 feet. On a hit, the creature takes lightning damage equal to your Martial Arts die + your Wisdom modifier.

A Weapon Fit for The Gods

Be it for beating drums, heads, or bolts of lightning into shape, a common similarity between storm gods is their favored weapon, the hammer. When a monk that practices the Way of the Thundering Sky uses a light hammer to make a ranged attack, it returns to the wielder's hand immediately after. The light hammer does not receive any other benefit.

Tempest Soul

When you reach 11th level, your soul becomes one with the raging storm. You gain resistance to lightning and thunder damage and learn the following Thundering Sky Techniques:

Almighty Surge. You can spend 3 ki points to cast the lightning bolt spell without any spell components.

You can spend additional ki points to cast lightning bolt as a higher level spell. Each additional ki point you spend increases the spell's level by 1. The maximum number of ki points that you can spend on the spell equals half your monk level.

Fulminating Strike. When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you can spend 3 ki points to send a creature flying with a violent storm-charged strike. The target takes extra thunder damage equal to three rolls of your Martial Arts die, and must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed to the end of a 20 foot long, 5 foot wide line and fall prone. Each creature or object in the line takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage. This attack deals maximum damage to objects.

Wind Running. Whenever you use your Step of the Wind, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed until the end of your turn. If you use Step of the Wind while outdoors in a thunderstorm, the flying speed is maintained until the storm ends or you leave it.

Chosen of the Storm

Upon attaining 17th level, you become the chosen vessel of the god of storms, able to take their form and call upon their absolute might.

Storm God Ascension. As a bonus action, you can spend 9 ki points to ascend into an avatar state for 10 minutes. This ascension ends early if you are incapacitated or die. While you are ascended, you gain the following benefits.

  • You can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. You can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. Furthermore, whenever a creature hits you with a melee attack, the creature takes 2d6 lightning damage.
  • You generate maximum static charges at the start of each of your turns.
  • You can attack thrice, instead of twice, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
  • The weather within 5 miles of you rapidly changes to that of a thunderstorm for the duration. When your ascension ends, the weather gradually returns to normal.

Once you use this technique, you can not use it again until you finish a long rest.
