Ausera
The lone adventurer, choosing to forgo companionship, begins to feel tired. He decides to camp where he is, barely able to even put up a tent as protection against the bugs of the swamp. He lets himself relax, dropping his guard, kicking back by the fire. He looks his death straight in the eye as it comes for him, but does not panic. He couldn't even if he wanted to. That is how we hunt.
Ausera and Member of the Thieves' Guild
The Ausera, or Croxulis as they are often referred to by other species, are a strange scaleless lizard like race. They live in swamps and other aquatic areas. Their appearance is similar to that of a large lizard, but where a lizard would have scales, they instead have a translucent membrane, revealing a swirl of colors underneath. These intelligent predators use their natural toxins to hunt their prey.
Gooey Biology
Ausera's forms are similar to that of a large lizard like a Komodo Dragon or Alligator. They prefer to walk on all fours, but can stand up on their hind legs, using the opposable thumbs on their forepaws to manipulate tools. They stand about 6-7ft tall when upright and can weigh up to 200 pounds. Their skin is a translucent color, revealing the goo layer underneath.
All Ausera have a swirl of two vibrant colors underneath their skin. These colors are caused by a gooey liquid under their translucent skin. This goo is used to both lure prey on, as well as help the Ausera control their cold blooded temperature.
If an Ausera's skin is cut or punctured, the goo inside will spill out, and eventually congeal to stop the flow, much like blood in a human does. During this time, the translucent skin repairs itself, rarely forming a visible scar afterwards.
Strange Language
The Ausera language is strange and flowing, with lots of vowel sounds. It is reminiscent of the babbling of a brook or a river. This makes their language incredibly calming to listen to. They create their vocalization by creating a vibration in their chests, and then shaping the noise it creates rather than by pushing air through vocal chords to create a sound. This, however, makes their language very hard to pronounce for other species.
As such, this leads to their names, and their species name to be changed by other species. To most races, Ausera are known as Croxulis, a name given to them by other species based on the sounds the Ausera make while trying to speak other languages. When speaking harsher languages like Common, they vibrate more harshly, causing the goo around their chests to shake turbulently. They often don't like speaking these languages due to the harsh feeling compared to their own.
Toxic Powers
Ausera have two types of toxins. Their skin secretes a toxin that just the scent from a distance can be incredibly calming and relaxing. And on contact, makes it hard to focus due to how relaxed it makes the victim.
The effect this poison has on other Ausera is minimal. It is limited to only relaxing them slightly, but not enough to cause any threat. However, this often leads to them piling up together to relax.
Strange Sight
Ausera lack eyes. In their place, they possess incredibly heat sensitive patches. This allows them to "See" in infrared light. This ability is incredibly useful as a predator, because Ausera are able to distinguish their prey from the surrounding area. However, they often struggle to see creatures who will blend in with the ambient temperature or are able to mask their body temperatures in some way.
Invisible Ink
Ausera art is also very different. What would appear to be a blank wall that is warm to the touch for a human, can be a beautiful mural to an Ausera. This is due to their invention of substances that primarily reflect infrared light, not visible light. They use these special inks to write their books and signposts.
Semi Aquatic Environment
Ausera are a semi aquatic species. Water is a huge part of their life, mostly due to living on a water world. Even the parts of land that do exist are mostly covered in rivers, waterfalls and lakes. As such, Ausera can hold their breath for a long time while underwater, and can reach depths that would crush a human.
Alluring Personalities
Ausera know the effect that their poison has on other species and will act on it. They can be incredibly charming, despite their unusual appearance and love the praise and admiration they can get from other species.
Ausera Names
An Ausera's name is chosen upon their hatching by an elder of their tribe. Each name is soft and flows off an Ausera's tongue, but might be difficult for a human to pronounce. As such, they often take nicknames that other races would find easier to say. Males are typically given names with a soft consonant ending, while females tend to have names with soft vowel endings.
