Spellcasting

3rd-level Way of the Four Elements feature

You augment your martial prowess with the ability to cast spells. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and the end of this subclass for its own spell list.

Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from the elemental spell list. You learn an additional elemental cantrip of your choice at 9th level, and an another at 15th level.

Spell Slots. The Way of the 4 Elements Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your elemental spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. For example, if you know the 1st-level spell burning hands and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast burning hands using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher. You know three 1st-level elemental spells of your choice. The Spells Known column of the Way of the Four Elements Spellcasting table shows when you learn more elemental spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn two new spells of 1st or 2nd level.

Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the elemental spells you know with another spell of your choice from the elemental spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your elemental spells, since you learn your spells through meditation and attunement with the elemental forces. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a elemental spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spellcasting Focus. Your own body and ki functions as a spellcasting focus for your spells. Note that maybe you will find difficult or even impossible to cast elemental spells in specific locations with a thin or inexistent connection to the spell element, such as fire spells in the Plane of Water and such.

Elemental Attunement

3rd-level Way of the Four Elements feature

  • You learn to speak, read, and write Primordial and all its dialects.

  • You have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma checks made to communicate with elemental creatures and other natives of the elemental planes.

  • Additionally, whenever you damage a target with an unarmed strike, you can change the damage type to fire, cold or lightning.

Elemental Body

6th-level Way of the Four Elements feature

Whenever you cast a spell, select fire, cold, lightning or bludgeoning. You gain resistance to the chosen type until the start of your next turn.

Elemental Weaving

11th-level Way of the Four Elements feature

You can manipulate your own energy and the primal energy of the world around you to create your magical effects. Immediately after you take the Attack action on your turn, you can spend 2 ki points as a bonus action to cast one 1st level spell with a cast time of 1 action without spending a spell slot.

Starting at 13th level, you can spend 3 ki points to cast spells of 2nd level with a cast time of 1 action in this way.

Starting at 19th level, you can spend 4 ki points to cast spells of 3rd level with a cast time of 1 action in this way.

Fury of the Elements

17th-level Way of the Four Elements feature

The energy liberated when you manipulate the elements enhances your body, improving your physical techniques with magical prowess.

  • You can also use your Flurry of Blows when you take the Cast a Spell action.
  • You can spend an additional 1 ki point when you use your Patient Defense feature to become immune to the grappled, prone and paralyzed conditions. Additionally, if an effect would move you without consent, you can instead ignore that movement.
  • You can spend an additional 1 ki point when you use your Step of the Wind feature to take both the Disengage and the Dash action, instead of only one of those.
