Monk Tradition: Way of the Drafter

Drafters are monks who specialize in studying the mystic art of color-drafting: channeling their life force into physical prismatic form. Each drafter specializes in a few colors, and each color behaves differently. More powerful drafters can draft more of the color spectrum, even reaching beyond the visible range.

Red is the color of passion, and flame. Red drafters create a thick, sticky, red goo which can be ignited.

Orange is the color of slippery deception. Orange drafters create a slippery, wet slime.

Yellow is the color of radiance and adaptability. Yellow drafters create a thin wet liquid that can evaporate into shining mist or condense into yellow steel.

Green is the color of flexibility and resilience. Green drafters create a tough, springy solid like thick leather or the wood of a sapling.

Blue is the color of resolute logic. Blue drafters create a hard, brittle, glassy substance.

Color Drafting

Starting at 3rd level, you gain the ability to draft a color of your choice, chosen from the list above. You gain 1 Cantrip and any two 1st level spells from that color's spell list. To cast a drafter spell, spend ki points equal to its spell level (cantrips are free to cast). Your casting attribute is Wisdom, and you may use colored glasses (a type of arcane focus) as a spell focus.

You gain access to higher level spells as your Drafter level increases. You may spend additional ki to cast a spell at a higher level, but you cannot cast higher than the highest level spell you know.

Every time you gain a level in this class you may forget a spell to learn a different available spell. At levels 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 you gain another spell of your choice from your known colors, of a level you can learn.

Free Drafting

Starting at 3rd level, you can summon your known colors into physical form adjacent to you. The materials can be any shape you want, but no more than 1 foot per Drafter level in their longest dimension. They follow the physical properties of your color materials, listed above. You can summon one color, or a mix of any you know.

Once you use this feature you cannot do so again until you finish a short or long rest. Any summoned materials last until the next time you use this ability.

Polychromat

Starting at 6th level, you gain the ability to draft another color of your choice, gaining access to the spells associated with it. You also gain another cantrip of your choice from your known colors.

Combat Drafting

Starting at 6th level, when take the Attack action you may cast a Cantrip associated with one of your drafting colors as a Bonus Action.

Superchromat

Starting at 11th level, you gain the ability to draft another color of your choice. You also gain another cantrip of your choice from your known colors.

Additionally you gain the ability to draft either Sub-Red or Super-Violet.

Sub Red

  • You gain the Control Flames cantrip and the Heat Metal spell
  • You gain darkvision out to 60 feet. As an action, you may shift your vision to detect all sources of heat within your line of sight.
  • When you deal damage with a Drafter spell, you may increase the damage dealt to a single target by your Wisdom modifier. This effect can only occur once per spell casting.

Sub Red is the color of mania and furious assault. Sub Red drafters create crystals which ignite when exposed to air.

Super Violet

  • You gain the Hunter’s Mark spell.
  • You gain the True Strike cantrip. You may cast True Strike as a free action on your turn by spending a Ki Point.
  • As an action, you may shift your vision to see invisible creatures and perceive the ethereal realm for one round.

Super Violet is the color of dispassionate analysis. Super Violet drafters create thin, fragile ethereal webs.

Prism

Starting at 17th level, you gain the ability to draft any color. You gain another cantrip of your choice from any color. You also gain the option you didn’t choose at 11th level.

Starting at 17th level, when you cast a Drafter spell that has a casting time of 1 action, you can spend 2 extra ki points to change the casting time to 1 bonus action for this casting.
