The Purple Smoke

Your patron is an ancient shapeshifting demon as old as some of the planes, known as Portus, the Purple Smoke. A very long time ago, they were one of the greastest generals of the Abyss, sent to conquer Limbo in the name of the demons. However, fate had other plans for Portus, and as a portion of Limbo declared themselves independant, Portus decided to stay with the other generals and become the Catterpillar of Wonderland, guiding people who came across him and his hookah. Occasionally, he woud go to the Material Plane, taking the form of a young girl, the Ill-Fated Child, to unnerve and scare people during the night. This was good fun. Unfortunately, these nighttime escapades led the archmage Edimus Stormwind learning of the demon and Wonderland. In 1749, Stormwind entered Wonderland and captured Portus, sealing him away to be used as a magical source of power. It wasn’t until recently, in 1957, that Portus was released, where he swore to fight against people like Stormwind. So, he began to grant powers to people, his warlocks.

You are one of those warlocks. Did Portus recuit you in Jersey, Wonderland, or the Material Plane? Why did he do so? Do you know him by one of his other forms, like the Catterpillar of Wonderland or the Ill-Fated Child? Which one of his transformations does your magic reflect?

Expanded Spell List

Portus lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Purple Smoke Expanded Spells
Spell Level Spells
1st burning hands, charm person
2nd detect thoughts, pyrotechnics
3rd motivational speech, stinking cloud
4th confusion, wall of fire
5th cloudkill, modify memory

Liberating Smog

At 1st level, you can harness Portus' ability to never be pinned down. When you or a creature within 30 feet of you that you can see becomes restrained or grappled, you can use a reaction to turn that creature momentarily into smoke, ending the grappled or restrained condition on yourself. Alternatively, you can use this ability to unlock a non-magical lock within 10 feet of you. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Fuming Curse

At 6th level, you learn to conjure Portus' smoke in disadvantageous places for your enemies. As a bonus action, you can curse a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you. Once per turn when you hit a cursed creature you can force it to make a Constitution saving throw, and if the saving throw fails, the target is blinded until the end of your next turn. While blinded in this way, the target is also poisoned. You can move the curse to a new creature within 30 feet of you as a bonus action on subsequent turns. The curse lasts for 1 minute, and once it is used, it cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.

Curated Humidor

At 10th level, Portus begins to give you a steady supply of magical cigars. At the end of each long rest, a magical cigar will appear in your hand or in a container within 10 feet of you (your choice). A cigar stay magical for a number of days equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one). Any creature who holds the cigar may light and smoke it as an action. Roll a d4 to determine the type of cigar. Spells casted with these cigars use your spell save DC if applicable.

d4 Cigar
1 This cigar is long with a gold band. When smoked, this cigar generates a cloud that can be read like the effects of the augury spell.
2 This cigar is stubby with a powder blue and mint green band. When smoked, you can immediately cast the enlarge/reduce spell without requiring concentration.
3 This cigar has an orange band with a dragon insignia. When smoked, the creature gains the benefits of the dragon's breath spell for the next minute (no concentration required).
4 This cigar is braided and has a white and red striped band. When smoked, the creature can immediately choose to switch the number of total hit points it has with one willing creature within 30 feet of it that it can see. Both of your new number of hit points cannot exceed your respective maximum number of hit points.

Metamorphosis

At 14th level, you can use a bonus action to manifest a pair of spectral butterfly wings from your back. While the wings are present, you have a flying speed of 30 feet. The wings last until you're incapacitated, you die, or you dismiss them as a bonus action.

Eldritch Invocations

At 2nd level, a warlock gains the Eldritch Invocations feature. Here are new options for that feature, in addition to the options in the Player's Handbook. If an eldritch invocation has a prerequisite, you must meet it to learn the invocation. You can learn the invocation at the same time that you meet its prerequisite. A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class.

Aura of Smog

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Stogie Feature

You find that the smoke in your cigar never runs out. You may cast Fog Cloud at will.

Smokey Familiar

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Chain Feature

As an action, you may give your familiar a smokey form, allowing it to move through any space that is at least 1/2 inch in diameter and it can do so without squeezing. This effect lasts for 10 minute. Once you have used this feature, you cannot use it again until your next long rest.

Heart Breaker

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Blade Feature

When you attack a creature charmed by you with your pact weapon, they become stunned until the end of your next turn. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your charisma modifier. Expended uses of this feature recharge on a long rest.

Protection From Bullies

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Tome Feature

Portus doesn't quite understand things in the way of book learning, but he tries to accommodate. You may cast Shield without expending a spell slot. Once you have used this feature, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Four-Eyes

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Tome Feature

Through a pair of spectral spectacles, you gain proficiency in Intelligence (Investigation), Intelligence (History), and Wisdom (Perception) checks.

Get Outta There!

Prerequisite: Portus Patron

You can cast Expeditious Retreat on yourself at will, without expending a spell slot.

Calling In A Favor

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, 9th Level

Double Bladed Guillotine

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, Pact of the Blade Feature, 5th Level

You can turn your pact weapon into a pair of scissors, usually used for cutting cigars. You can use your bonus action to turn your pact weapon into these scissors or back again. The scissors can be used, without an attack roll or Strength check, to cut any non-magical rope or string within five feet of you.

In addition, when you attack a structure or object with your pact weapon, the damage is doubled through the destructive properties of the scissors.

Wings of Portus

Prerequisite: Portus Patron, 5th Level

You can cast fly once using a warlock spell slot. You can't do so again until you finish a long rest. When you cast fly in this way, you sprout an illusory pair of purple butterfly wings.

Pact Boon

At 3rd level, your otherworldly patron bestows a gift upon you for your loyal service. The following option is available to a warlock, in addition to those offered in the Player's Handbook: Pact of the Stogie.

Pact of the Stogie

You may use your bonus action to create a lit cigar in your mouth. This cigar can have several magical properties to help you get in and out of certain social situations. You may summon a cigar with one of the following traits:

  • You can create a cloud of smoke that obscures your face. You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.
  • You will always have a second cigar to give to someone. Extending the offer makes people partial to you. You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Deception) checks.
  • You can alter your smoke into any shape, color, and odor you see fit, provided it stays in a 5 foot cube centered around your head.
  • You may cast Fog Cloud without expending a spell slot. Once you have used this option, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
  • You can send embers out of your cigar. You can cast Dancing Lights. When you cast it in this way, it does not require concentration.

When you wish for your cigar to go away, you may dispel it as a bonus action. If you attempt to summon a cigar while you already have a cigar summoned, the older cigar vanishes.
