Bloodmetal Soul

Version 1.0
By Morgan's Brews (Tumblr)

While many sorcerers draw their power from inate magics seeped into their boodline, certain sorcerers gain their magic from something far more physical. These sorcerers draw their magic from minuscule fragments of arcane metals in their blood, appropriately named "bloodmetal." Bloodmetal can infuse itself with any other metallic material, giving it's wielder the ability to manipulate it to create deadly weapons and masterful creations.

Bloodmetal Soul Spells

Starting at 1st level, the connection to your bloodmetal grants you new magic. You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Bloodmetal Souls Spells table. The spell counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn't count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Bloodmetal

Your magic comes from a substance known as bloodmetal: a piece of metal magically bonded to you that provides you with magical over metallic substances.

After finishing a long rest, choose one metallic weapon or a metallic object weighing 10 pounds or less. This weapon becomes infused with your bloodmetal. While infused, you can magically mold the shape of the object into a different shape over the course of 1 hour. If the infused item is ever more than 5 feet away from you for more than 1 minute, it will liquify and attempt to take the shortest path back to you, and reform in your hand.

If the infused object is a weapon, you gain proficiency with that weapon while it's infused. Infusing a different object with your bloodmetal ends the infusion on the previous object.

Swirling Steel

Using your metallic attunement, you can magically will your bloodmetal to fly around you as sharp blades. As a bonus action, you can create several metallic blades that immediately make one attack at a foe, and then start orbiting around you.

Attacks with the blades are a special type of attack with a range of 5 feet. You are considered proficient in them, and you use your Charisma modifier for their attack rolls. They deal 1d4 piercing or slashing damage (your choice, whenever you attack), which is considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity. This damage increases to 2d4 at 6th level, 3d4 at 11th level, and 4d4 at 17th level.

The blades will orbit you for 1 minute, or until you dismiss them with a bonus action. While they orbit, you can use a bonus action to attack with the blades again. Additionally, if you are hit by an attack while they orbit, you can use your reaction to deflect the attack with the blades. You gain a bonus to AC equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1) until the end of the round, including against the triggering attack. You also gain temporary hitpoints equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

You can create these blades two times, and you regain all expended uses after a short or long rest.

Controlled Form

At 6th level, you gain two more ways to control your bloodmetal. To use either of these techniques, your Swirling Steel feature must be active, but doing so will immediately end the feature.

  • Retreating Strikes. As a bonus action, you can use your blades to cover your escape, flailing them wildly in the faces of your opponents. Every creature in a 15 feet cone in a direction of your choosing must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking damage equal to your Swirling Steel damage on a failure, and half as much on a success. You then gain the benefits of either the Disengage or Dash actions.
  • Pin Down. As a bonus action, you can attempt to pin down a foe with your bloodmetal. Choose a creature within 5 feet of you, who must make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, they take damage equal to your Swirling Steel damage and are restrained. On a success, they take half as much damage and are not restrained. A restrained creature can make the saving throw again at the end of each of its turns. You can end the restrained condition on the creature as a bonus action.

Fury of Blades

Starting at 14th level, the metallic weapons you create from your bloodmetal are even more sensitive to magic. Whenever you cast a spell of 1st level or higher while your Swirling Steel feature is active, you can immediately make an attack with the blades (no additional action required). After making this attack, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1).

Puremetal Blessing

At 17th level, your control over you bloodmetal has allowed you to purify it. A metallic substance similar to your bloodmetal now coats you, instilling your body with the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
  • You gain a +2 bonus to AC.
  • You are immune to disease and the poisoned condition, have advantage on saves against poison, and have immunity to poison damage.
  • Whenever you roll initiative and have no uses of your Swirling Steel feature remaining, you regain one use.

Author's Notes

The Swirling Steel attacks can ONLY be made with a bonus action while the feature is active, not with the Attack action or any other feature that would grant a weapon attack. You do not add any modifier to the damage of those attacks.
