New Racial Option

Bravus, like many other realms within the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse, has distinct features. As a result of the divine, arcane, cultural, and geographical nature of the setting, some races are different, and some are entirely unique. Some options are available for players in addition to those presented in the Player's Handbook and other published sources. One such option is presented here: The half-dwarf.

Half-Dwarf

The Azulith Empire has existed for thousands of years, and their influence has spread across the land of Bravus. As a result, there has been a significant intermixing of the dwarven kingdoms with the native populations of the areas where the empire has spread. These half-dwarves exhibit both the hardy nature of their dwarven ancestry and the adaptable qualities of humans.

The Same, But Different

Half-dwarves tend to have what many consider to be the best of both worlds in their parentage. They are almost as tall as humans, but they have the sturdy build of dwarves. They live longer than humans, but the adventurous and ambitious nature not seen in many of their dwarf kin.

Other dwarves can see the human traits in them, and humans see the dwarf side. They have the wide variety of skin and hair tones present in human populations, and the males can grow thick facial hair like dwarves. This causes them to stick out in homogenous communities. To outsiders, though, they can blend in with both, especially in areas with high populations of either race.

Adventurers, Ambassadors, and Outcasts

Half-dwarves are common throughout the empire and their vassal states. This enables them to serve as emissaries and diplomats between both groups. They are familiar with dwarven customs, and they have a connection to the natives of their homelands.

However, in areas which resent the presence of the empire, or regions which were brought under its control unwillingly, this mixed heritage can cause friction and even hostility. Due to this, they sometimes feel unwelcome in their homes. This causes some to drift to the fringes to society, becoming hermits, nomads, or bandits. Others turn the resentment into fuel for adventure, and strike out on their own as heroes and adventurers.

Half-Dwarf Names

Half-dwarves use a variety of names. It is common for them to use dwarven names, particularly in areas where Imperial influence is prominent or popular. However, since half-dwarves can be found in so many different places with unique cultures, it is equally common for their names to reflect their homelands.

Half-Dwarf Traits

Your character has some traits which reflect their dwarven heritage and others which show the versatility of their other half.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.

Age. Half-dwarves physically mature at a similar rate as humans, reaching adulthood in their twenties. Their average lifespan often reaches 200 years.

Alignment. Due to their dwarven heritage, many half-dwarves value structure and social order, and thus they lean toward being lawful. Similarly, their upbringing tends toward good, as they often seek to help others achieve the same well-being they desire. However, they also inherit the mercurial nature of humans and are not bound to a specific alignment.

Size. Half-dwarves can vary in size between dwarves and humans. They are taller than most dwarves, and more stout than most humans. They are typically a little over 5 feet tall, and can weigh more than 200 pounds. Your size is medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. Thanks to your dwarven blood, your eyes are adapted to seeing in dim and dark conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern colors in darkness, only shades of gray.

Dwarven Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and resistance to poison damage.

Skilled Craft. Your blended ancestry has given you specialized training. You gain proficiency in 1 skill and 1 tool of your choice.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write, Common, Dwarvish, and one other language of your choice.

Other bloodlines. Not all half-dwarves are mixed with humans. They can also have elven, orchish, or even planetouched blood. You can use the options in this class to show off your other origins.

For example, if one of your parents is a dwarf and the other is a gnome, you might use your Ability Score Increase to raise your Intelligence. If your other parent is an elf, you might take Perception as one of your skill proficiencies.

Your blood can also influence your other attributes. If your non-dwarf ancestry is halfling, you might only be four feet tall and weigh less than one hundred pounds.
