Champion Fighter Rework

The theory behind this design is to make the subclass still simple and accessible but have some choices to make as you level and help you feel like the 'champion' of fighters.

Focus Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus +

your Strength OR Dexterity modifier

Improved Critical

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Critical Focus

Also at third level you can augment your critical strikes, choose one of the following Critical Focuses:

  • Brutal Focus. When you critically hit a creature, they take extra damage equal to half your level (rounded up).
  • Cruel Focus. When you critically hit a creature, they must succeed on a strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Slashing Focus. When you critically hit a creature, they must succeed on a dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the end of their next turn.

Remarkable Athlete

Starting at 7th level, you can add half your proficiency bonus (round up) to any Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution check you make that doesn’t already use your proficiency bonus. In addition, you are at the peak of your physical prowess. You gain proficiency in Dexterity Saving throws.

Fighting Style Expertise

Your fighting style you chose at level 1 becomes much stronger, as a reflection of your growing mastery as a fighter. For example if you chose the archery fighting style you gain the Archery Expert ability.

  • Archery Expert. When you have advantage on a ranged attack you may also make an extra attack as a bonus action. In addition, you gain +2 to damage rolls with a ranged weapon.

  • Defence Expert. As a reaction to being attacked, you may gain resistance to the triggering attack. In addition, your armor class bonus increases to +2 up from +1.

  • Dueling Expert. As a reaction to being attacked in melee, you can impose disadvantage on the attack roll. While fighting a creature that isn’t adjacent to any of your allies the damage from your fighting style increases to +4.

  • Great Weapon Expert. When hitting a creature with a two-handed weapon. Choose another creature within 5 feet of the original target and within your reach. If the original attack would hit the second target it takes damage equal to half the damage dealt to the original attacker.

  • Protection Expert. While wielding a shield you provide 3 quarters cover to allies if you are standing between them and their attacker. If you impose disadvantage on an attack roll due to your Protection Fighting Style and the attack still hits. You can choose to take the damage instead of your ally.

  • Two Weapon Expert. While wielding a weapon in each hand you may make an extra attack when taking the attack action. This extra attack cannot get advantage from any source. In addition, when a creature provokes an attack of opportunity from you, you may make two attacks instead of one.

Superior Critical

Starting at 15th level your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 18-20.

Apex Fighter

You are no longer just a champion amongst commoners. You are a champion amongst heroes. The pinnacle of fighting prowess.

  • While conscious and not at 0 hitpoints, you regain hitpoints equal to your con modifier at the start of each of your turns.
  • You gain an extra action surge per day. This recharges on a long rest, unlike your other action surges.
  • When using indomitable you roll two die instead of 1, taking the higher of the two results.
