# The Dragonblood Class
##### by Fallenstar
\pagebreakNum # The Dragonblood Class A lone human walks along the path over the rolling hills. As he walks between two hills, four bandits wielding clubs jump down on him. Normally he would be easily outmatched by the bandits, but this is no ordinary human. He clutches the pendant around his neck, allowing himself to change into his other form. A flash of light. Where the human once stood, now stands a proud gold dragon. The bandits don’t stand a chance. An elf stands at the top of the tower. The flaming building creates a red glow in the distance. She dives off the tower. Summoning her draconic power, she causes two silver dragon wings to sprout from her back. She flies gracefully over to the inferno, then, still airborne, releases the freezing breath that she has in her lungs. The flames are drowned out by the shards of ice, and the building is extinguished, covered in icy crystals. The dwarf, summoning strength beyond what his frame should be able to accomplish, slams the orc’s hand against the table. The wood splits. Luckily, the orc has tough bones, and he is fine. “We have a winner!” Says the referee. Yes, he won the arm wrestle, but his draconic power almost showed. He couldn’t let that happen. Not ever. ___ There are many bloodlines blessed with draconic ancestry in worlds of D&D. Many of these bloodlines lead to powerful sorcerers. However, there’s a rarer, and, in some ways, more powerful effect spawned by these bloodlines, allowing a humanoid to take the form of a dragon. Those who have this ability are loved and feared throughout the Multiverse, and have been given the title of “Dragonbloods”. ___ Dragonbloods are humanoids with a draconic bloodline, but rather than magic, like a sorcerer, gain the ability to actually take the form of a dragon. However, in this form, they’re not always able to completely control themselves, and sometimes become what is known as a “Feral Dragonblood.”, where they go on a rampage. This generates mixed feelings for people who work with Dragonbloods, because they know that they can be a powerful asset, however, if misused, could be a worse threat than that which they are facing. Dragonbloods in their dragon form are much weaker than the true dragons of their bloodline, as a side effect of their humanoid nature. > ##### Alternate Power Sources > Some characters of this class may have gotten their draconic power from a different source. You may actually be a true dragon whose power has been taken from them, or you chose to give it up willingly. Or perhaps you made a pact with a draconic deity, who has granted you this power. Regardless of its origin, you are a member of the dragonblood class, and you gain the class features. \columnbreak #### Optional Rule: Dragonblood Qwirks Occasionally, having an ability to transform into a dragon leads to some interesting effects on the personality. If you think it would provide a fun roleplaying mechanic, you can roll on the following table, and add the result to your personality traits: | D4 | Qwirk | |:---:|:-----------:| | 1 | When the feeling strikes you, you roar. | | 2 | You pocket gold at any opportunity and have developed a small hoard. | | 3 | You enjoy your meat raw. | | 4 | You feel uncomfortable indoors and underground. You need space to spread your wings. | Additionally, you may have strange physical traits, for example, eye or hair color that hints at your draconic blood. ### Class Features As a dragonblood, you gain the following class features: #### Hit Points ___ - **Hit Dice:** 1d6 per dragonblood level - **Hit Points at 1st Level:** 6 + constitution modifier - **Hit Points at Higher Levels:** 1d6 (or 4) + constitution modifier per dragonblood level after 1st #### Proficiencies ___ - **Armor:** none. - **Weapons:** Dagger, Spear, Sickle, Shortsword, Light crossbow, Sling, Club. - **Tools:** none ___ - **Saving Throws:** Charisma, Constitution - **Skills:** Choose two from Persuasion, Intimidation, Athletics, Acrobatics, Perception, Survival. #### Equipment You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background: - A light crossbow and 20 bolts - *(a)* 2 daggers *(b)* a spear or *(c)* a shortsword - A draconic focus - *(a)* an explorer's pack or *(b)* a dungeoneer's pack Alternitavley, you may use 3d4*10 gp to buy your own equipment: **Multiclassing Prerequisite:** Charisma 13 or higher. Next, choose the Red Dragon as your dragon ancestor. \pagebreakNum > ##### Discovery of Power > Dragonbloods usually don't know that they can use their abilities until the dragon inside them is released by some emotional event, usually an event of loss or anger. This could mean the death of a close family member or mentor, or the destruction of a homeland. When this happens, the dragonblood loses control and transforms, leading them to discover their power, for better or for worse. ___

### Draconic Ancestry The type of dragon that you are descended from is up to you. The following table will help you determine traits later in the class: | Dragon | Damage Type | Breath Range | Breath Save | + Stat | - Stat | Bonus Proficiency | Speed | |:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| | Red | Fire | 30 ft. cone | DEX | CHA | DEX | Intimidation | Climb | | Green | Poison | 30 ft. cone | CON | INT | DEX | Deception | Swim | | Blue | Lighting | 5*60 ft. line | DEX | CHA | DEX | Stealth | Burrow | White | Cold | 30 ft. cone | CON | CON | INT | Stealth | Burrow | | Black | Acid | 5*60 ft. line | DEX | CHA | WIS | Stealth | Swim | | Silver | Cold | 30 ft. cone | CON | CHA | DEX | Arcana or History | Climb | | Gold | Fire | 30 ft. cone | DEX | CHA | WIS | Persuasion or Insight | Swim | | Bronze | Lightning | 5*60 ft. line | DEX | CHA | DEX | Insight | Swim | | Brass | Fire | 5*60 ft. line | DEX | CHA | DEX | Persuasion | Burrow | | Copper | Acid | 5*60 ft. line | DEX | INT | DEX | Deception | Climb | **Languages:** This draconic bloodline also grants you the ability to speak, read, and write draconic. ### Draconic Transformation Where most people with a draconic bloodline would gain magic, you gain the ability to actually take the form of a dragon. As a bonus action, you can release the draconic power stored inside you to transform into a dragon. You can do this a number of times equal to your charisma modifier per short rest (minimum of 1). While you are transformed, your size becomes large, your creature type becomes Dragon, and you gain the following traits: ##### Stat Changes Some of your ability scores change. You gain a +2 bonus to Strength, a +1 bonus to Constitution, and then a +1 bonus to the stat in the “Stat increased” column for your dragon ancestor. However, you also have a -2 penalty to the ability score indicated in the “Stat decreased” column. Using this, a stat can increase past 20, to a maximum of 22. ##### Speed Change Your walking speed changes to 40 feet, if it was not already faster. Additionally, you gain a flying speed of 80 feet. You also gain a climb, swim, or burrow speed, as shown on your dragon ancestry table. If you gain a climb or swim speed, it is equal to your walking speed. (40 feet) If you gain a burrow speed, it is equal to half your walking speed. (20 feet). ##### Increased Durability After applying the bonuses to constitution, your max hit points and current hit points are multiplied by 2. You lose all temporary hit points you had previously. Additionally, your armor class is equivalent to 12 + your dexterity modifier + your constitution modifier. \pagebreakNum ##### Elementally Resistant You have resistance to the damage type indicated on the dragon ancestor table. ##### Darkvision You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. ##### Natural Weapons You gain fangs and claws that you can use as melee attacks when you are in your dragon form. Your fangs have a base damage of 1d12 piercing damage. Your claws deal 1d6 slashing damage and count as having the finesse and light properties. You can make 2 claw attacks as an action, as if you are dual wielding. The base damage of your fangs increases to 2d12 at level 10, and then to 3d12 at level 17. The base damage of your claws increase to 2d6 at level 10, then to 3d6 at level 17. You are considered proficient in your natural weapons, and they both have a reach of 5 feet. ___ You must have at least a 10' by 10' space to transform. Additionally, you can't transform under any effects that negate magic, such as *antimagic field*. You can’t use weapons, besides your natural weapons, can’t use tools, and can’t make sleight of hand checks when in your dragon form. However, you can still cast spells. You can't fully control your dragon form, as shown by the following traits: ##### Draconic Wildness You are not always in full control of yourself while you are in your dragon form. You can only remain in control of yourself for 1 minute. After that time limit, if you are still in your dragon form, you go into a rampage and the DM controls you. You attack all creatures in sight. To regain control and revert to your human form, you must make a charisma check with a DC of 20. You are not proficient in this check. You can gain advantage on this check if one of your allies succeeds on a charisma (persuasion) check with a DC of 8 + your charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus. ##### Optional Rule: Draconic Fury Sometimes, when a dragonblood feels strong emotion, usually rage, they lose control, transform into their dragon form, and instantly rampage, as if they transformed without their draconic focus. At your DM’s discretion, when you feel strong anger, you must succeed on a DC 20 charisma saving throw or instantly transform and rampage. If you failed this save, when you rampage, it’s as if you transformed without your draconic focus. On a success, you may release a roar or some similar effect. ##### Returning to a Humanoid Form It takes an action to return to your humanoid form. When you return to your humanoid form, your current HP is halved, your AC, stats, and abilities return to normal. If you were rampaging when you returned, you must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or fall unconscious. \columnbreak ##### Your Draconic Focus You have a draconic focus in your starting equipment. This is a gemstone that allows you to have some minor control over your dragon form. It also stores all equipment on your person in a demiplane until you change back to your humanoid form, at which point your equipment reappears on your person. If you transform without your focus, all the equipment you are wearing, such as armor or clothing, is destroyed, and other equipment on your person, such as weapons, is dropped. Additionally, you must make the check to regain control when you try to revert to your humanoid form. If you fail, you rampage, and you have disadvantage on the check to regain control. | Name | Cost | Weight |:---:|:---:|:---:| | Stone | 2gp | 1 lb. | | Pendant | 3gp | 1 lb. | | Circlet | 10gp | 1 lb. | | Ring | 5gp | -- | ### Breath Weapon Starting at level 2, when you are in your dragon form, you gain a breath weapon. You can use this breath weapon a number of times equivalent to your constitution modifier per short rest (minimum of 1), and it has a recharge of 5-6. The range is indicated on the draconic ancestry table. Each creature within range must make a saving throw, ability indicated on draconic ancestry table, DC 8 + your constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. On a failed save they take 2d8 of the associated damage type, and on a success, they take half damage. The damage increases to 3d8 at 6th level, 4d8 at 11th level, and 5d8 at 15th level. ### Draconic Mindset Different dragonbloods feel differently about their power. This leads to different ways they use it. At level 3, choose 1 draconic mindset from Dragon Shifter, Trait Mixer, or Wyrmstrength, detailed at the end of this document. Your draconic mindset grants you features at 3rd level, 9th level, 14th level, and 18th level. ### Ability Score Increase When you reach 4th level and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th levels, you can increase 1 of your ability scores by 2, or 2 of your ability scores by 1. You can’t increase any ability scores past 20. If your DM allows feats, you can take a feat instead of increasing an ability score. ### Bonus Proficiency When you reach 5th level, you gain proficiency in Perception. If you were already proficient in perception, you double your proficiency bonus when making perception checks. You also gain a skill proficiency shown in your draconic ancestry table. If it lists multiple proficiencies, you can choose one. \pagebreakNum ### Improved Control When you reach level 7 in this class, you are proficient in the charisma check to regain control of your body after rampaging. ### Mastery of Movement When you reach level 10 in this class, you have mastered your natural movement ability. If your dragon ancestor grants a swim speed, you can breathe both air and water in your dragon form. If your dragon ancestor grants a climbing speed, you can cling on to near vertical surfaces effortlessly. If your dragon ancestor grants a burrow speed, you gain the ability to burrow through loose dirt or gravel. ### Frightening Transformation When you reach level 13 in this class, any time you transform, each creature you choose within a 30-foot radius of you that can see you must succeed on a wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + Charisma Mod. + proficiency bonus) or become frightened of you while they can see you. #### Longer Control Starting at 15th level, you can remain transformed for a number of minutes equal to your charisma modifier, minimum of 1, without rampaging. ### Improved Resistance When you reach level 17 in this class, you become immune to the type of damage associated with your dragon ancestor while you are transformed. ### Master Control When you reach level 20 in this class, you no longer rampage, unless you choose to. When you do rampage, you automatically succeed on the charisma check to regain control. Additionally, you can remain in your dragon form for up to 1 hour before you are forced back. You no longer need your draconic focus. ## Draconic Mindsets Many different dragonbloods feel different ways about their power, and thus use it in different ways. However, there are three main ways that dragonbloods generally use their power. ___ ### Dragon Shifter Dragon shifters focus mainly on their skills as a dragon. Though they may only be able to do it for a minute, some of them enjoy their dragon form more than their humanoid form. Or maybe they realize that their dragon form has more potential than their human form. They most resemble the true dragons that their bloodlines come from. ### Tail attack Starting when you take this draconic mindset at 3rd level, you gain a 3rd natural weapon. Your tail attack has a reach of 10 feet and has a base damage of 1d10 bludgeoning damage. The base damage of your tail increases to 2d10 at level 10, and then to 3d10 at level 17. #### Multiattack At 9th level, when you make a bite attack, you can make 2 claw attacks as a bonus action. #### Improved natural Weapons Starting at 14th level, your fangs, claws, and tail count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity. Additionally, they all get a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. #### Dragon Stats Increase At 18th level, your dragon stats increase. Rather than the original bonuses and penalties, your strength score increases by 4, your constitution score increases by 2, and your increased stat increases by 2. Your decreased stat decreases by 1. The maximum for these stats, while you are in your dragon form, is now 24. ### Trait Mixer Some dragonbloods don’t view their dragon and humanoid forms as separate. They learn to limit their shapeshifting, allowing them to take on some of their draconic traits without completely transforming or losing control. #### Shapeshifting Limiter Starting at 3rd level, you can limit the amount you change your body. You can’t gain the bonuses to ability scores you can gain by shapeshifting fully, but you can take 1 of the following traits while still in your humanoid form as a bonus action. You can also dismiss it as a bonus action. * **Dragon’s breath:** You gain the ability to use the breath weapon of your dragon form. * **Dragon’s Claws:** You gain the ability to use your claw attacks. However, you cannot make sleight of hand checks, cannot use tools, and cannot use weapons. Optionally, you can just change one of your hands, and still use a one-handed weapon, with your claw as the other hand. * **Dragon’s Fangs:** You gain the ability to use your bite attack. * **Dragon’s Wings:** You gain a flying speed equal to twice your humanoid walking speed.. However, you cannot wear armor or a shirt unless it is designed with wings in mind. * **Dragon’s Scales:** You gain the AC of your dragon form. When you take on one of these traits, you must make a DC 10 charisma saving throw or transform into your dragon form and instantly rampage. At 9th level, you can take on 2 of the above traits at once, and at 18th level, you can take on 3. #### Improved Control Starting at 14th level, you no longer need to make the saving throw to not rampage when you take on your dragon traits. \pagebreakNum ### Wyrmstrength The dragon form of a dragonblood is a little bit uncontrollable (most would say that's a bit of an understatement.). This leads to many to fear dragonbloods. They worry that they might lose control and become a feral dragonblood. This worry sometimes even extends to the dragonblood themselves. They suppress their dragon form, and they try not to let it show. They try to pretend to be a normal humanoid. Sometimes, they decide to use that power to supplement their own humanoid strength. However, suppressing that power makes it want to be free to spread its wings all the more. #### Bonus Proficiencies Wyrmstrengths focus on the abilities of their humanoid forms rather than their dragon form. As such, you gain proficiency in simple and martial weapons, light and medium armor, and shields when you take this draconic mindset at level 3. #### Dragon's Strength Starting at level 3, you gain the ability to borrow the strength of your dragon form and use it in your human form. As a bonus action, you can apply the stat increases and decreases of your dragon form in your human form. You can also dismiss them as a bonus action. However, borrowing that strength runs the risk of having your dragon form be released. At the start of each turn you have these stat increases, you must make a charisma saving throw starting at DC 10. Each turn after the first, the DC for the save goes up by 1. If you fail the save, you lose control and go into a rampage. You instantly transform into your dragon form and rampage. It works as if you transformed without using your draconic focus. The DC also goes up by 1 when you take any damage with the stat boosts applied. #### Fighting Style At 9th level, you can choose one fighting style from the fighter class. #### Extra Attack Starting at 14th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, when you take the attack action on your turn. #### Improved Control At 18th level, you have advantage against the saving throw to keep control when you have your stat boosts applied. ###
At level 20, as the Dragonblood class you can take the following epic boon: #### Epic Boon: Boon of Control **Prerequisites: Level 20, Dragonblood class, Charisma 18 or higher** When you transform, you can remain in your dragon form indefinitely, without rampaging. You no longer need to make the charisma check to not rampage, and the duration of your transformation is now infinite. You no longer rampage. \pagebreakNum ## Changelog * Before 2/6/2020: Didn't record changelog, sorry :( * 2/6/2020: Added "Mastery of Movement", moved some stuff around in dragon shifter subclass, added tail attack for dragon shifters, made it so that everyone gets longer control, not just dragon shifters. * 2/7/2020: Added a note block suggesting alternate origins for a dragonblood's power. For roleplay purposes :)
