Tool Proficiency

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Painter’s supplies and Calligrapher's supplies. Of you already have proficiency with one of these proficiencies, you can gain proficiency with another type of artisan's tools of your choice.

Illustrator Spells

Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Illustrator Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don't count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Artificer Level Spell
3rd   color spray, silent image
5th   magic mouth, mirror image
9th   hypnotic pattern, major image
13th   hallucinatory terrain, Leomund's secret chest
17th   creation, seeming

Artbook of Creation

At 3rd level, your paintings become more than art, they become the inspiration of creations you can bring to life. When you gain this feature, you can select three of your paintings, or create three new such paintings, to form the basis of your artbook. These can be paintings of creatures, objects, or phenomena (such as fire, storms, etc).

While holding your artbook, as an action you can flip to a page you wish to bring to life and cause it to become real, leaping from the page in a flourish of magic.

Artbook Creations
Creation Limitations
Creature       A creature can be animated from the artbook only if the CR of that creature is equal to 1/3 your Artificer level (rounded down). You can control the actions of this creature with your bonus action while it exists, taking any movement and actions that creature could normally take. The creature acts on your initiative, and remains real until it's hit points are reduced to zero, or one minute passes.
Object       An object can be a mundane or uncommon magical item, or a mundane item under the effect of a magical spell, so long as that spell is an Artificer spell of a level you could cast (you do not need to know the spell) and could normally effect that item (such as a sword under the effect of magic weapon). The item remains real for 10 minutes once invoked.
Phenomena       The phenomena can have the effect of an evocation spell of a spell level equal to the highest level Artificer spell slot you have, and casts as if you cast that spell.

Once you do this, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest. You can bring an painting to life again before than by using a spell slot; the spell slot must be equal to the CR of the creature brought to life, 1st level or higher for an uncommon item, or equal to the level of the spell for an item under the effect of a spell or for the effect of a spell. You can only have one creation real at a time.

You can add an additional painting to your art book at 7th, 11th, 15th, and 20th level. When you gain a level in this class, you can exchange on the paintings in your artbook for another painting.

Flair of Creativity

At 5th level, your art is magic, and your magical is art; where one starts and the other begins blurs. When you cast an illusion spell, you can add your proficiency with Painter's supplies to your spell save DC for that spell.

Additionally, you can add your proficiency with Painter's supplies to hit points of creatures you create, or to one roll damage or healing done by spells you invoke from your artbook.

Rules Tip: Proficiency and Expertise

Note that abilities like "Tool Expertise" allow you to add twice your proficiency modifier to ability checks you make that uses your proficiency. Expertise would not double the proficiency added for abilities like Flair of Creativity or other uses of your Proficiency not using ability checks.

Boundless Creations

By 9th level, you creations are unbounded by some of the limitations; you can have two creations from your art book real at the same time, and they last twice as long in the case of creatures and objects.

Additionally, you can make paintings in your artbook of rare items real with the use of 3rd level or higher spell slot.

Profound Meaning

Starting at 15th level, you can convey simple but profound meanings with simple strokes, as an action you can create a painting that renders profound meaning into creatures that witness them.

  • Essence of Hope. Any allied creature that can witness this painting is filled with sudden hope, gaining temporary hit points equal to your Artificer level and advatage on their next saving throw before the start of your next turn.
  • Essence of Despair. Any creature of your choice that can witness this mark is filled with overwhelming despair, becoming lethargic; at the start of their next turn, they make a Wisdom saving throw. On failure, they end their turn.

Creations last one minute before the power fades from them, and can only effect a creature once. Once you make a use this feature, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest.
