Dragonmark focus rod

Wonderous item, very rare (requires attunement)

This rod always has a Siberys dragonshard mounted prominently at the top, but one that is not tied to any one specific dragonmark. This rod can be used by any caster as a spellcasting focus. For a creature with a dragonmark, it serves as much more than a spellcasting focus.

When attuned and held in hand by a creature with a dragonmark, true or aberrant, the rod allows the wielder to tap into the magical energies of their dragonmark to cast a limited number of spells found in their Spells of the Mark racial ability table (a.k.a. dragonmark spells).

This has the equivalent effect of granting the wielder an additional number of spell slots. These spell slots can only be used for casting spells found in the wielder's Spells of the Mark table, even if the wielder is not a spellcaster. Any expended spell slots provided by the dragonmark focus rod is regained at the end of a long rest.

The number of dragonmarked spell slots increases as the wearer gain levels, as listed in the table below.

Level 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
1st 1
5th 1 1

Spellcasting Ability

A spellcaster attempting to cast a dragnomark spell through this rod will retain the use their own spellcasting modifier as described by the class's spellcasting feature.

For non-spellcasters such as fighters or rogues whose class does not provide a spellcasting feature, the spellcasting modifier for casting dragonmark spells is listed in the Dragonmark Spellcasting Modifier table. All the usual spellcasting rules apply, including the requirements for vocal, somatic and material components when casting a dragonmark spell.

Note that attuning and wielding this item does not make the wielder a spellcaster.

The dragonmark focus rod can also be used by a creature with an aberrant dragonmark, allowing them to gain the same ability to cast dragonmark spells. In addition, the aberrant dragonmark user gains knowledge of a number of spells from the sorcerer spell list as listed in the Aberrant Dragonmark Spells Known table below.
