Way of Re-Tae

Those who follow the teachings of Re-Tae have learned the importance of patience and properly applied power. This style trains it's members in a combination of stealth and brutal combinations.

Inspired by the martial art Renewal Taekwondo from the God of Highschool webtoon (now an Anime too).

Unseen Movement

At 3rd level you gain proficiency with stealth. If you are already proficient, you can choose another proficiency from the monk skill list.

Re-Tae: Basics

At 3rd level, you learn several techniques unique to the style.

  • Arang (Elbows) and Baekdu (Knee Strikes). You have learned to make short swift strikes and can now choose to deal piercing damage with your unarmed strikes.

  • Hidden Step. When you use Step of the Wind, you can now choose to take the Hide action instead of dash or disengage.

  • Homi-Geolyi (Unlocking Guard). You have learned how to loosen an opponent's guard for a moment. When you take the attack action you can spend 1 ki point to change it into an unlocking guard. On a hit, you deal half damage, but your next attack is made with advantage.

  • Three Stage Hoechook (Roundhouse Kick). You have learned to launch a series of three kicks each aimed at the same vital point but from different directions. The end result is a brutal strike that can flatten any creature. When you take the attack action, as a bonus action, you can spend 3 ki points to make three consecutive attacks against the same target. If all three attacks hit, the third attack is a critical hit, and it deals additional damage equal to your monk level.

Follow-Through

At 6th level, you have learned to put your weight fully behind a strike. Your unarmed strikes gain the siege property.

Skilled in Silence

Re-Tae was originally developed to train spies and commandos in the martial arts, learning Re-Tae requires some of the skills developed by such individuals. As a result, you learn that awareness of your surroundings is just as important as moving quietly. By 6th level, when you perform a Dexterity (stealth) check, you can add your Wisdom modifier to the total.

Re-Tae: Advanced Techniques

At 11th level, you learn the secret techniques of Re-Tae:

  • Reverse Hoechook (Reverse Roundhouse Kick). You have learned to counter an enemy's attack and send some of the damage back to them with a rapid counter kick. When you are hit by a melee weapon attack, you can use your reaction and spend 2 ki points to make an unarmed strike against the creature, if it is in your range. If you hit, you take half damage from any bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, and you can add the damage you reduced to the damage dealt to the target as bludgeoning damage.

  • Jin Hoechook (True Roundhouse Kick). This kick uses your ki to cause a concussive burst of air hurling towards your enemies. As an action you can spend 5 ki points to deal 3d8 bludgeoning damage to all creatures in a 10 by 30 foot line. You can spend up to 3 additional ki points to deal an additional 1d8 bludgeoning damage per ki point spent. At 17th level the damage die becomes a d10. Additionally, you can still make an unarmed strike as a bonus action after using this technique.

Recoilless Technique

The pinnacle of Re-Tae techniques is the ability to use the techniques with maximum efficiency. At 17th level, you have learned how to perform the pinnacle version of your Re-Tae techniques. Your previous techniques gain the following benefits:

  • Recoilless Three Stage Hoechook (Roundhouse Kick). If all three attacks hit, you can use your stunning strike feature without expending a ki point and the target makes the Constitution save at disadvantage.

  • Recoilless Reverse Hoechook (Reverse Roundhouse Kick). You can spend 1 additional ki point to reflect all other damage types except psychic. Any damage sent back at the target creature that is not bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, is returned as the same damage type as was dealt to you.

  • Recoilless Jin Hoechook (True Roundhouse Kick). The area of effect is now a 10 ft by 60ft line.
