The Shapeless

Your Patron is a formless entity, an unfathomable being whose nature you can't ever hope to comprehend. Its nature is unknowable, either appearing as an amalgamation of silhouettes, as an impossibly complex geometric shape or existing in a form of pure energy or thought anchored to the very fabric of reality itself. This being may have originally been a powerful creature, perhaps even a god, that sought to abandon the limits of its corporeal form, or an entity from a reality far beyond your own. Its motives are inscrutable, born from a higher understanding of existence and desires and needs above those of mere mortals.

Expanded Spell List

The Shapeless lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Shapeless Expanded Spells
Spell Level Spells
1st disguise self, dissonant whispers
2nd blindness/deafness, silence
3rd blink, sending
4th arcane eye, polymorph
5th passwall, Rary's telepathic bond

Grasp from Beyond

Beginning at 1st level, you know the mage hand cantrip, which does not count against your known cantrips and is considered a warlock spell for you.

In addition, you can move the hand through solid objects, and when you cast this cantrip you can choose to make the hand invisible. When doing so, you will know instinctively where the hand is, but other creatures cannot percieve it unless they succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Arcana) check againtst your Spell Save DC to discern the presence of it.

Fleeting Form

Also starting at 1st level, you can disperse your physical being and remanifest your being at will.

When a creature makes an attack against you and hits, you can use your reaction to flicker out and reappear at an unoccupied point within 10 feet of the attacking creature. You take the damage as normal, and this movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

You can use this feature twice and regain all expended uses upon finishing a short or long rest.

Harrowing Presence

Starting at 6th level, the grip of reality on you loosens.

You can move through creatures. Spaces occupied by creatures are considered to be difficult terrain, and if you end your turn in an occupied space you are ejected into the nearest unoccupied space and take 2d10 force damage.

Additionally, as an action you can slip into a creature within 10 feet of you. Until the start of your next turn, you occupy the same space as the chosen creature, following its movements. Attack rolls against you have disadvantage, and if the attack misses, it instead hits the creature you are melded into. At the start of your next turn, you are ejected into an unoccupied space within 10 feet.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Facets of Madness

Starting at 10th level, you can split your being into twisted facets of yourself.

As an action, you fracture your being into two distorted facets of yourself that appear within 10 feet of where you stood and last for up to 1 minute. These facets will take up a form similiar to that of your patron, perhaps as a flickering silhouette or a distortion of space itself.

On each of your turns while the effect is active, you can control one or both of these facets, able to move each of them equal to your movement speed, and being able to use actions, bonus actions and reactions as normal. Your facets have hit points equal to half your maximum hit points, and spells cast by them do not consume spell slots, but can only be cast at 2nd level.

When the effect ends or when you end the effect as an action, the facets dissolve and you reform where either facet was. When a facet is reduced to 0 hit points, you must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be forced to reform and take 4d8 psychic damage.

Once you use this feature, you can'no't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Dissolution

Starting at 14th level, you can dissolve and reconstruct the material form of objects and other beings.

As an action, you can disperse any creature of a size of Huge or smaller or an object no larger than a 20 foot cube. An affected creature must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be dissolved. The target creature or object is erased, leaving behind a glowing sphere of energy that contains the essence of its being. The affected creature or object is in a form of stasis, and unaffected by the passing of time. You can absorb this sphere into yourself and at will, using an action, reform the creature or object in an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet of you.

You can only affect one object or creature at a time using this feature. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Quirks

Warlocks of a Shapeless patron often seem normal on a surface level, but closer inspection reveals minor, yet offputting details. The following quirks for a Shapeless patron warlock are made to give a little flavour to one who has made a pact with an ever changing, incorporeal being.

Shapeless Warlock Quirks
d8 Quirk
1 The color of your eyes seems to always be changing.
2 Sometimes when you go to grab an object your hand simply phases through.
3 You are never happy with your appearance and always try out new clothes, hairstyles and accessories.
4 You refer to yourself as "we".
5 You do not bleed when injured, with wisps of shadow billowing out of your wounds instead.
6 When flustered, your silhouette begins to flicker.
7 You run into walls a lot, expecting to simply pass through.
8 Weapons sometimes pass through you, but the wounds still appear.

Your Pact Boon

The following are suggestions for the appearance and style of your pact boon as a warlock of the Shapeless.

Pact of the Chain. Rather than using the form of another creature, the Shapeless patron prefers to bestow upon their servants fragments of their selves to watch over and serve their Warlocks. Incorporeal and capable of camouflaging, these so-called Onlookers excel at espionage and sabotage.

Pact of the Blade. Your pact weapon may appear to be adorned with impossible shapes and fractals, or may seem to flicker out of existence at times, as if it were only loosely anchored to the material plane.

Pact of the Tome. Your Book of Shadows appears as a book with pages of ever shifting inscriptions and illustrations, or as a tome that appears to be empty to anyone other than you.

Pact of the Talisman. Your Talisman may take the appearance of a necklace adorned with amorphous, shape shifting gems, a ring made of a dark, non-solid material or a pair of glasses with lenses that refract light in bizarre ways.

Pact of the Chain Familiar

The following familiar is provided as an additional choice for warlocks who have chosen the Pact of the Chain.

Onlooker

The onlooker is a small being of energy, appearing as a distortion of reality, a shadowy blob or a writhing mass of eyes. Their incorporeal form and unrivaled ability to silently scout make them highly desirable as a familiar.

Onlooker

tiny construct, unaligned

  • Armor Class 13
  • Hit Points 10 (3d4 + 3)
  • Speed 0 ft., fly 30 ft. (hover)

STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA
5 (-3) 16 (+3) 10 (0) 16 (+3) 16 (+3) 5 (-3)

  • Skills Investigation +5, Perception +5, Stealth +5
  • Damage Resistances bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, psychic
  • Senses darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 16
  • Languages all languages known by its master, but cannot verbally communicate
  • Challenge 1/2 (100 XP)

Incorporeal. The onlooker can fly through creatures and solid objects that are not warded or affected by abjuration magic.

Paracausal Bond. The onlooker can establish a telepathic bond with a willing creature within 1 mile that it is familiar with and resides within the same plane. The bonded creature can then perceive sights, sounds and smells from the perspective of the onlooker without requiring an action or disabling the creatures own senses. This bond lasts for 1 hour, and ends when either the onlooker or the bonded creature travel to a different plane, or are more than 1 mile from each other.

Calculated Retreat. The onlooker can take the Dodge and Disengage actions as a bonus action.

Actions

Maddening Ray. Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 20ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d4 + 4) psychic damage.

Disperse. The onlooker distorts its form to become imperceptible. For the next 10 minutes, the onlooker is invisible to any creature except its master. The invisibility ends if the onlooker takes any action or bonus action.

3

Eldritch Invocations

The following invocations have been added as additions for the Shapeless patron. Your DM can lift this restriction to better suit the campaign if these invocations are also appropriate for another warlock patron.

Be as One

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, Pact of the Chain feature, 5th level

The unique bond between you and your familiar deepens, and your familiar becomes an extension of your being.

If your familiar would take damage, you can use your reaction to grant your familiar resistance to all damage until the start of their next turn, and take the same amount of damage as psychic damage.

In addition, you can use a bonus action to instantly swap positions with your familiar while they are within 120 feet of you. Once you swap positions this way, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.

Form of Thought

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, 7th level

You can cast the greater invisibility spell once on yourself using a warlock spell slot. You can't do so again until you finish a long rest.

Aspect of the Ephemeral

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, 11th level

As an action, you can temporarily manifest an aspect of your patron in an unoccupied space within 60 feet of you for 1 minute. All creatures within 20 feet of the aspect must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or become destabilized.

A destabilized creature cannot be attacked by or attack another creature that is not destabilized, and cannot leave the range of the aspect. At the end of each of its turns, a creature can roll another Charisma saving throw. On a success, the effect ends.

Once you call forth this aspect, you can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Distortion

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, 5th level

If you use the Disengage or Dash actions on your turn, or have not used the Attack or Cast a spell actions on your last turn, you are considered to be under the effects of the blur spell. This effect ends if you use the Attack or Cast a spell actions.

Shifting Pages

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, Pact of the Tome feature

Whenever you finish a long or short rest, if you have spent at least 10 minutes of the rest reading your Book of Shadows, you can exchange any cantrip you know for a different cantrip from any spell list. The cantrip counts as a warlock spell for you. If you finish a long rest, you can exchange two cantrips in this way.

In addition, you can use your tome to invoke a single spell that you are unfamiliar with. As an action you can concentrate on the pages of your tome and cast a single spell of your choice from any spell list. The spell must be of a level equal to or lower than your Slot Level.

Once you do so, you can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Phase Rush

Prerequisites: The Shapeless patron, Pact of the Blade feature

Once per turn, when you take the Attack action with your pact weapon and have advantage on an attack, you can forgo advantage on the attack to phase through the creature as a bonus action.

You move in a straight line through the creature, dealing force damage equal to your proficiency bonus and ending in a space up to 10 feet behind the creature from where you started. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Additionally, you can summon your pact weapon as a bonus action instead of an action.
