Potion Effects

The following are homebrew potions designed to function better at higher tiers of play, so that they can stay relevant no matter how stronk your players are. Some of these may feel a tad OP, so feel free to omit them.

1. Deadly Poison

A creature that consumes this potion makes a constitution save. On a fail, the creature takes poison damage and becomes poisoned for 1 minute. On a success, They take half as much damage, and are not poisoned.

T1: DC:14, 3d6 poison/ T2: DC:16, 6d6 poison/ T3: DC:16, 6d6 poison and an additional 1d6 poison damage at the start of each of its turns/ T4: DC:18, 8d6 poison damage, and an additional 2d6 poison damage at the start of each of its turns.

Looks like water. Smells like water. Tastes like burning.

2. Flight

You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed.

T1: 1d6 rounds/ T2: 1 minute/ T3: 1 hour/ T4: Until your next long rest.

Looks like milk. Smells like copper. A small sip makes you feel lighter.

3. Fire Breath

You can breath out a 20' cone that deals fire damage as a bonus action for 1 minute. Dex save for half damage.

T1: DC:13, 3d6/ T2: DC:15 4d6/ T3: DC:16, 5d6/ T4: DC:18, 6d6

Looks like lantern oil. Smells like dragonfire (metal, ashes, and ozone). A small sip makes small licks of flame escape your mouth for two seconds.

4. Gaseous Form

As per the spell gaseous form.

T1: 1 minute/ T2: 10 minutes/ T3: 1 hour/ T4: Until your next long rest or you dismiss the effect as an action.

Looks like greenish pond water. Smells like chlorine. A small sip makes you burp.

5. Giant Size

Your size category increases by 2. Your physical attacks deal double damage, and you are resistant to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. When making Strength checks or saves, treat your strength score as 24 (+7). These changes last for 1 minute.

Looks like brownish water. Smells like armpits. A small sip makes you an inch taller for two seconds.

6. Healing

You regain hit points.

T1: 1d8+5/ T2: 2d8+10/ T3: 4d8+15/ T4: 5d8+20

Looks like faintly-bluish milk. Smells like sugar. A small sip makes your aches and pains fade for two seconds.

7. Heroism

You are filled with energy for the next minute.

T1: +2 to all checks and saves/ T2: +3 to all checks and saves/ T3: +4 to all checks and saves/ T4: +5 to all checks and saves.

Looks like wine. Smells like ammonia. A small sip makes you feel heroic for two seconds.

8. Invisibility

As per the spell.

T1: Persists for 1 minute. Ends early if you make an attack or cast a spell/ T2: Persists for 10 minutes. Ends early if you make an attack or cast a spell/ T3: Persists for 1 minute/ T4: Persists for 10 minutes.

This potion is invisible. Smells of salt. A small sip numbs your tongue for a few seconds.

9. Nondetection

All magical attempts to discern your location or perceive your thoughts fail. People forget you exist as soon as they stop looking at you.

T1: Persists for 1 minute/ T2: Persists for 10 minutes/ T3: Persists for 1 hour/ T4: Persists until your next long rest or until you dismiss it as an action.

Looks like water. No smell. A small sip does nothing.

10. Petrification

The drinker makes a DC:14 con save. On a fail, they begin turning to stone and are paralyzed. They must make a DC:16 con save at the end of their next turn, becoming petrified on a fail, or ending the effect on a success. The effects of this potion can be removed with a Greater Restoration spell, or similar magic.

11. Polymorph

As per the spell. A piece of a creature must be added to this potion before it can be used. You transform into an exact copy of that creature.

T1: Persists for 1 minute/ T2: persists for 10 minutes/ T3: Persists for 1 hour/ T4: Cannot be removed without the aid of magic.

This potions changes colors randomly each day. It smells like a different fruit each day. A small sip makes your face rearrange itself for two seconds.

12. Shrink

Your size category decreases by 2, to a minimum of tiny size. Your attacks deal half damage, and you are vulnerable to bludgeoning damage. The distance you can jump is trippled, and you have advantage on dexterity checks and saves. These changes last for 1 minute.

Looks like water with tiny bubbles on the bottom. Smells like mice. A small sip makes you shrink an inch shorter for a few seconds.

13. Sovereign Glue

Glues anything to anything. It takes 6 seconds to dry, and cannot be removed by anything but Universal Solvent or a Wish spell. If spread over a surface, it requires a DC 17 perception check to notice. a creature glued to something must succeed on a DC:20 str check to free itself.

Looks like amber-colored water. Smells like acetone. A small sip sticks your lips together—they must be cut apart (they'll heal).

14. Spider Climb

As per the spell.

T1: Persists for 1 minute/ T2: Persists for 10 minutes/ T3: Persists for 1 hour/ T4: Persists until your next long rest.

Looks like brown salsa. You can see exactly eight different shades of brown and black in the liquid. Smells like dust. A small sip makes your hands mildly sticky for a few seconds.

15. Breathlessness

You no longer need to breath and are immune to gases. You cannot speak or cast spells with verbal components.

T1: 1 minute/ T2: 10 minutes/ T3: 1 hour/ T4: until you inhale (no action required), or you take a long rest.

Looks like milk. Not only does it have no smell, it actually prevents you from smelling anything for a few seconds. A small sip briefly paralyzes your lungs.

16. Bounty

You gain 50 pounds. If poured on food, it erupts into 3d6 more servings of that food. Copies are delicious, fancy, and have none of the magical properties of the original food (if any). “Food” is limited to human food.

Looks like bacon grease. Smells like lard. A small sip is immensely filling, leaving you sated for a few seconds.

17. Burrowing

You gain a burrow speed equal to your walking speed and blindsight out to 30ft.

T1: 1 minute/ T2: 10 minutes/ T3: 1 hour/ T4: Until you finish a long rest.

Looks like water. Smells like earth. A small sip gives you the uncomfortable feeling that your fingernails are too long.

18. Comprehension

You can understand all spoken and written language. Other creatures can understand what you say and write regardless of the languages you know.

Looks like water. Smells like water. A small sip makes you feel like you suddenly found great insight, but forgot it as soon as the thought occurred to you.

19. Courage

You are immune to fear. If a creature forces you to make a save against a fear causing effect, you instead gain a bonus to attack and damage rolls made against the source of the fear.

Looks like beer filled with golden glitter. Smells like brandy. A small sip makes you feel fearless.

20. Ethereality

You fall under the effects of the Etherealness spell for the duration. You can end this effect as an action.

T1: 1 minute/ T2: 10 minutes/ T3: 1 hour/ T4: Until you finish a long rest.

Looks like water. Smells like ozone. A small sip makes your lips transparent for two seconds.
