Kitsune

The kitsune are a people with one foot in the physical world and the other in the realm of spirits. Known throughout the Dragon Empires for their love of art, beauty, and trickery, kitsune are shapeshifters who, in their true forms, appear as lithe, anthropomorphic foxes. In these true forms, they often possess a downy coat of auburn fur, although more exotic coloration is possible. The most magical of their kind sport multiple tails; stories of very powerful kitsune with up to nine tails are told in certain parts of Minkai. Each kitsune also possesses a single human form, typically strikingly beautiful and retaining the lithe and agile frame of their true form. Regardless of which of their two guises a kitsune adopts, their eyes retain the same hue—an arresting color that ranges from golden to brilliant blue.

Kitsune society is enigmatic and largely impenetrable to non-kitsune. While kitsune prize loyalty among friends, their delight in trickery often spawns rivalries and ill will among strangers. This reputation for shenanigans precedes them throughout the Dragon Empires and beyond, leading most kitsune who dwell within human societies to take great pains to hide their true natures and live public lives as humans, taking to their true forms only after twilight to pursue entertainment and other nocturnal delights.

Kitsune Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Dexterity increases by 1.

Age. A Kitsune generally reaches adulthood around 15 years of age. They age similarly to humans from birth through their ninth birthday, at which point an enormous growth spurt occurs, leading the kitsune to full adulthood in only a few years. Save for the very powerful sorcerous kitsune and the lucky few, most kitsune to not pass beyond their 80th birthday.

Alignment. Because of their love of good-natured trickery, there are very few lawful kitsune. They run the gamut between good and evil, however, but the majority of good.

Size. Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

  •  Size modifier = 2d8
  •  Height = 4 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
  •  Weight in pounds = 100 + (2d4 x your size modifier)

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. Thanks to your connection to the realm of spirits among the Dragon Empires, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Agility. You have proficiency in the Acrobatics skill.

Shapechanger. As an action, you can chance into a human or half-elf form, or back into your humanoid fox form, which is your true form. Your statistics remain the same. Your human or half-elf form cannot be changed and remains the same each time you take its form. You can remain in your chosen form until you use an action to revert to your true form or until you die.

Bite. While in your true form, you have a fanged snout. It is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Tien and Senzar.

New Feat

Nine-Tailed Heir

Prerequisite: Kitsune

Unlike the average kitsune, you were born with extra tails; nine, to be exact. Because of this, you have some magical capabilities. You know the dancing lights cantrip. In addition, you know either the charm person or disguise self spell, as well as either the invisibility or suggestion spell, and may cast each once without expending a spell slot. You regain the ability to cast your chosen spell when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
