School of Psionics
(Unearthed Arcana, Revised by APM Thel)
Wizards study magical power in all its forms, including the magic of psionics. Those wizards who follow the tradition of Psionics hone the magical potential of their own minds. Sometimes called psionicists or mentalists, these wizards interact with the multiverse through the lens of their psionic aptitude and awareness.
Psionicists channel their magic by focusing their minds. By doing so they can transcend their physical bodies, adopting forms of pure thought, casting spells psionically to bypass the need for components, and perceiving the world with a broader range of senses.
As a member of the Psionics tradition, you might have awoken your psionic potential through the strain of your esoteric studies, or perhaps you joined a scholarly order dedicated to unlocking the magic of the mind.
Psionic Awaken
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, you have taken your first steps on the journey to becoming a psion. Add one 1st level spell of your choice from the enchantment or divination schools of magic to your spellbook, if you choose a spell that doesn't appear on the wizard spell list, the spell is nonetheless a wizard spell for you.
Psionic Talent
You harbor a wellspring of psionic power within yourself, an energy that ebbs and flows as you channel it in various ways. This power is represented by your Psionic Talent die, the starting size of which is a d6.
Psionic Talent Options. You can use your Psionic Talent die in the following ways:
Mind Link. You can form a telepathic connection between your mind and the mind of another. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see, and roll your Psionic Talent die. For a number of hours equal to the number you rolled, you and the chosen creature can speak telepathically with each other while the two of you are within a number of miles of each other equal to the number you rolled. To understand each other, you each must speak mentally in a language the other knows. The telepathic connection ends early if you use this ability to form a connection with a different creature.
Psionic Focus. You have learned to channel psionic energy through an object making into a psionic focus. As a bonus action, choose one object that you and only you are holding completely in your hand, and roll your Psionic Talent die. For a number of hours equal to the number you rolled, your chosen object becomes your psionic focus While your psionic focus is on your person, you gain the following benefits:
- The object is a spellcasting focus for you.
- When you roll psychic or force damage for any of your wizard spells, you can reroll any of those damage dice that roll a 1, but you must use the new roll.
- As a bonus action you can instantly recall the psionic focus to your hand as long as you are within 1 mile of it.
The object stops being your Psionic Focus early if you use this ability to make a new Psionic Focus.
Psionic Understanding. You can use your psionics to pear into its mind which can give you a great knowledge about them. As a bonus action if your Psionic Talent die is available, you can choose one creature you can see within 60 feet of you, You immediately learn one of the following characteristics about the creature of your choice:
- Intelligence score.
- Intelligence saving throws.
- Wisdom score.
- Wisdom saving throws.
- If it is currently under the effect of the charmed or frightened condition.
- If it is Immune to the charmed or frightened conditions.
- Its current emotional state summarised in one word (such as happy, confused or violent).
- If it has told a lied in the last minute.
After learning that characteristic roll your Psionic Talent die and multiply the result by two, if that result is higher then the creature’s CR you learn two additional characteristics about the creature of your choice.
If the creature is hidden from divination magic or that its mind can’t be read, you learn that it’s immune to this psionic talent options and nothing else. Once you have used this on psionic talent option on a creature it can’t be used on that creature or creatures that share its stats block again for another 24 hours.
Changing the Die’s Size. If you roll the highest number on your Psionic Talent die, it decreases by one die size after the roll. This represents you burning through your psionic energy. For example, if the die is a d6 and you roll a 6, it becomes a d4. If it’s a d4 and you roll a 4, it becomes unusable until you finish a long rest. Conversely, if you roll a 1 on your Psionic Talent die, it increases by one die size after the roll, up to its starting size. This represents you conserving psionic energy for later use. For example, if you roll a 1 on a d4, the die then becomes a d6.
Whenever you finish a long rest, your Psionic Talent die resets to its starting size. When you reach certain levels in this class, the starting size of your Psionic Talent die increases: at 5th level (d8), 11th level (d10), and 17th level (d12).
Psi Replenishment. As a bonus action, you can calm your mind for a moment and restore your Psionic Talent die to its starting size. You then can’t use Psi Replenishment again until you finish a long rest.
Psionic Adapt
Starting at 6th level, you have learn how to better use your psionic power, this power aids in both your offense and defense, allowing you the following options;
Psionic Surge. You can overload your psionics to batter down an opponent’s defenses. As a reaction upon casting one of your wizard spells, you can decrease your psionic talent die by one die size to impose disadvantage on a target’s saving throw against the spell you just cast, you must use this feature before the target rolls its saving throw but after you cast the spell.
Psionic Backlash. As a reaction, when a creature you can see hits you an attack you can roll your psionic talent die then subtracting the number rolled from the creature's roll, causing it to miss if the adjust result is less then or equal to your AC, if the attack still hits after the roll the creature who hit you take psychic damage equal to the number rolled plus your intelligence modifier.
Empowered Psionics
Beginning at 10th level, When you deal psychic or force damage with a wizard spell, you can add your Intelligence modifier to the damage against one of the spell’s targets.
Additionally As long as your Psionic Talent die is available, wizard spells you cast ignore resistance to psychic and force damage.
Psionic Mastery
At 14th level you have mastered casting spells using your mind. When you cast a wizard spell, you can choose to cast the spell psionically. If you do so, the spell doesn’t require verbal, somatic, or material components that lack a gold cost.
