The Stregoni
SECOND EDITION

Stregoni

Stregoni are the remnants of a once-mighty, star-spanning empire. Once as powerful as the mightiest of dragons and as beautiful as the most perfect of Angels, a blood curse was cast upon the Stregoni in ages past, turning them into a race of living vampires doomed to prey upon others or lose their immortal souls to the terrors of the Warp. Once the protectors and herders of the mortal coil and the younger races that came after them, cruel fate or the machinations of a sinister entity has turned them into the bloodthirsty predators of today!

Blood calls to a Stregoni as the flame calls to the moth. Always hungry, they are forced to hunt and feed upon living creatures they once protected and nourished as their own children. For, the alternative is to risk their sanity and their immortal souls to the horrible ailment known among their kind simply as the Curse of the Blood Moon.

Originally a race of humanoids with wondrous Divine Powers that allowed them to spread to numerous worlds throughout the Cosmos, they are now afflicted with a curse of blood dependency which cost them their once mighty star-spanning Empires.

Despite their tragic past and everything they have endured in the name of survival, the Stregoni have managed to flourish once again. Nowhere near as numerous as they once

were, now they are mostly found in the fringes of

society, living secluded lives in the guise of

decadent nobles and halfwild madmen.

Also known as the Pale Lords or the

Living Vampires, Stregoni are often

remote, distant, and secretive. Their

condition weighs heavily upon them so they

are slow to let outsiders get close to them,

and for good reason: They never know when

the Blood Curse might overtake them and

those they would now call friends become

nothing more than prey. Better to keep others

at bay and not get attached. That way, they

only need to mourn the loss of an innocent life

and not a friend who trusted them.

If you want a character who is mysterious and

mistrusted if not feared, with a predatory,

almost alien outlook on mortality and life, who

struggles to fit in society, you should play a

Stregoni.

YOU MIGHT...

  • Strive to embrace, fight, or dismiss the vampiric

reputation of the stregoni.

  • Carefully monitor your relationship with other, shorter-lived ancestries, either keeping them at a distance or making sure you are not easily approachable, both in a physical and an emotional way.
  • Dress and act in a way that is strange or unfamiliar to most, with mannerisms and etiquette of a bygone era.

OTHERS PROBABLY...

  • See you as a dangerous individual, predatory and dominant in nature, whether this is true or not. Some admire, while others avoid you.
  • Consider you eccentric and convoluted, with motives that are hard to follow and relate to.
  • Expect you to turn into a blood-crazed madman at any moment without prior warnings.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Stregoni are physicaly similar to humans, if slightly taller and with a few other notable differences. Their skin is white as snow, not simply ‘Pale’ as their moniker suggests, while their eyes have slit pupils like those of cats and their colors range from yellow and orange to gray and green.

By far the most striking feature of a Stregoni, however is the retractable fangs most possess. Some Stregoni are able to hide them, others however have no such luck giving them the appearance of a terrible cat of prey. Accentuating the entire look is usually a thick mane of hair, usually snow white or silver in color but blonde, scarlet red, or coal black are also common.

Stregoni fashion typically follows that of the humans of the area they occupy, if a bit old fashioned and out of date. Most tend to wear darker colors and hats or other headgear when out in the public eye.

Stregoni mature much like a human does until their late 20s but their aging slows down to a crawl afterwards. Due to their tendency of staying isolated as well as the low birthrate of the cursed race, young Stregoni are all but unseen by outsiders.

A Stregoni could in theory live forever, violence, diseases, and accidents being the only true threats to their immortal lives. Most however grow tired of the passage of time under the constant nagging of their cursed hunger or the endless preying upon those they would have called friends. Few Stregoni live passed the age of 400 for these reasons.

SOCIETY

Aldenalim society once spread throughout the multiverse influencing and affecting every other major and minor race they came in contact with. Unfortunately all that ended with the Curse of the Blood Moon and the fall of the Ancients into savagery and eventually what would become the Stregoni. Ancient ruins and lone towers from that long forgotten civilization and time can still be found occasionally, hidden in foreboding forests or high mountaintops.

Stregoni are a people on decline. Each death brings the entire race one step closer to annihilation, since births are so rare.

At the same time however, it also brings them one step closer to release from the Blood curse.

This unique mindset has made the Stregoni grim, almost looking forward to their end while at the same time dreading it. For death under the blood curse brings eternal damnation and undeath!

No Stregoni would willingly submit to an eternity of unlife as a True Vampire and in fact the hatred they hold for undead is only compared to that for their other eternal enemies: the ones they hold responsible for their downfall, the alien and enigmatic Alfen!

ALIGNMENT AND RELIGION

Stregoni are often seen as cruel and cold-hearted, and in a manner they have to be to survive under their curse. They do not create strong bonds with most short-living creatures since today’s friend could be tomorrow’s prey in their eyes. While other creatures often see them as monsters, the truth is that to a Stregoni each life lost to their Hunger is a burden they have to live with for an eternity. Most are Neutral.

They follow their own religion and have their own deities they worship which are thought to be the Patriarchs or Matriarchs of their various Bloodlines. Dragomir is venerated as the Protector and Guardian of the dwindling race, while the abhorred Weisner is not worshiped, except in small cells of fanatical doomsday cults.

NAMES

Stregoni have names often associated with old Noble Houses among humans. That is not coincidental since they often pose as old, secluded families of human ancestries with Noble ties. They usually have ancient and out of use names but some prefer to simply use their Surname when interacting with others not of their kind, while others yet adopt names common in the cultures they live in.

SAMPLE NAMES

Antiopia, Bartholomeos, Dragomir, Drakwald, Elhena, Guindwer, Klaus, Manfred, Nicodemus, Ophelia, Savarus.

Relations

Stregoni are not true vampires. they are alive, if barely, but due to their blood curse are required to feed upon the blood of other living creatures or perish. This has made them avoid getting close to others not of their kind. At the same time, they also feel the need to guide and protect their one-time wards, leaving them in a very precarious position both closer and afar from those they would prey upon. The only creatures a Stregoni would have no qualms feeding upon are ones inimical to their needs, the cursed Alfen!

STREGONI HERITAGES

Stregoni come from ancient Bloodlines dating back to the time of the Aldenalim. Choose one of the following Ancestries at 1st level.

DRAGOMIR BLOODLINE

You come from a Bloodline of nobles and rulers. You can spend 1 blood Point from your blood pool to cast Charming Words as per the Focus Spell of the same name. In addition, you gain a +1 circumstance bonus to checks to Make an Impression using the Diplomacy skill usually, or recall Lore related to nobility and social status.

DRAKWALD BLOODLINE

Your Bloodline has always been renown for its deep connection to the Arcane. Choose one cantrip from the arcane spell list (page 307 of the Core Rule book). You can cast this spell as an arcane innate spell at will. A cantrip is heightened to a spell level equal to half your level rounded up. You can change this cantrip to a different one from the same list once per day by meditating to realign the power in your Blood; this is a 10-minute activity that has the concentrate trait, and you spend one Blood Point to complete it.

GRESWIER BLOODLINE

Your nature is more beastly than most of your kind. You have sharp Claws in addition to your Bite attack. You have a Claw unarmed attack that deals 1d4 slashing damage and has the agile and finesse traits. By spending a blood point you can increase the size of damage caused by your Claws to 1d8 for 10 minutes.

NAZARR BLODLINE

You are descended from Nazarr the Bloodhound, the most feared Aldenalim Bounty Hunter of all times. You gain a Special Sense: Imprecise Scent with a range of 30 feet. This means that you can use your sense of smell to determine the exact location of a creature. The GM will usually double the range if you are downwind from the creature or halve it if you are upwind.

In addition, you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to Survival checks to track creatures you have previously sensed with your Scent. By spending a Blood Point you can improve your degree of success on a check by one category (Critical Failure to Failure, and failure to Success) when tracking by scent.

SADHARRE BLOODLINE

Whether your ancestors hail from lands close to the Night, or have lived underground for countless of generations, you can see in complete darkness. You gain darkvision.

ANCESTRY FEATS

At 1st level, you gain one ancestry feat, and you gain an additional ancestry feat every 4 levels thereafter (at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th levels). As a Stregoni, you select from among the following ancestry feats.

1ST LEVEL

The Aldenalim had deep knowledge of the dark secrets of the cosmos before their Fall. Even though a lot has been lost to the ravages of time your family still holds some of that forbidden lore. You gain the trained proficiency rank in Arcana and Occultism. If you would automatically become trained in one of those skills (from your background or class, for example), you instead become trained in a skill of your choice. You also become trained in Stregoni Lore.

Stregoni

Blood Pool

All Stregoni have Special focus points called Blood Pool, which they can replenish only by using their Fang attack. A Stregoni with no Blood Pool is starving. You start with a blood pool of 1 and can increase it to a maximum of 3 (as per normal focus points) through special Stregoni feats, or through abilities that give you focus points. A Stregoni always uses the blood Pool to power focus spells even those gained from other sources.

Cursed Metabolism

You gain nourishment through the consumption of fresh blood. You typically do not need to pay for food. If you go without blood for a week you begin to starve, as you do if your Blood Pool drops to 0. You can derive Blood from preserved blood potions (10gp per bottle, but only good enough to stave starvation).

Fangs

Your fangs are sharp. You gain a Fangs unarmed attack against any creature you have grabbed, dealing 1d6 Piercing damage and Drain 1. Using your fang attack against a living humanoid or animal increases your blood pool by 1, the first time you do so on each target per day.

ARCANE BLOOD

STREGONI
Drakwald Bloodline Heritage
The Drakwald blood is particularly strong within you. You gain the Eschew Materials Wizard Class Feat except that you do not use intricate sigils in place of materials but a drop of your blood (which you need a free hand to draw from). Like the normal feat, this doesn’t remove the need for costly materials listed on the spell list.

In addition, your Blood Pool increases by 1 (maximum 3).

Stregoni 1

STREGONI

You gain a +1 circumstance bonus to damage with weapons and unarmed attacks against creatures with the Alfen or Undead trait. If your attack would deal more than one weapon die of damage (as is common at higher levels than 1st), the bonus is equal to the number of weapon dice or unarmed attack dice.

In addition, if a creature critically succeeds at an attack against you and deals damage to you, you gain your bonus to damage against that creature for 1 minute regardless of whether it has the chosen trait.
