School of Vancian Magic
As a vancian, you study a lost tradition of spellcasting that was old even when the gods were young. Living spells leap from your mind when they are cast, freeing yourself up for other tasks and arcana. Practicing this art requires a disciplined train of thought that can weave together multiple focused effects simultaneously. At higher levels you can ensnare stray magic and even develop superior spells with twice the normal magnitude.
Concentration Savant
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd Level, the gold and time you must spend to copy a spell into your Spellbook is halved if that spell has the concentration tag.
Vancian Magic
Starting at 2nd Level, you can unburden a living spell from your mind. When you expend a slot of 1st level or higher for a spell that has the concentration tag, you can remove it from your list of prepared spells (but not your Spellbook) to make it Vancian. You no longer need to maintain concentration on the spell and it continues for its full duration unless you end it early or it is dispelled. You can sustain a number of Vancian spells equal to your Intelligence modifier at any one time.
Mnemonic Recovery
Starting at 6th level, you have more familiarity with living spells. When you use your Arcane Recovery feature and have fewer than your maximum number of spells prepared, you may choose a number of concentration spells from your Spellbook and prepare them. The spells can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your Wizard level (rounded up), and none of the spells can be 6th level or higher. You cannot use this feature to prepare more spells than your maximum.
Spell Conservationist
Starting at 10th level, you are able to rapidly move living spells into and out of your mind. Once per long rest you can choose to activate one of the following features, and you gain an additional use at 16th level.
- Capture: As part of successfully ending a concentration spell early or preventing one from being cast, such as with Dispel Magic or Counterspell, you can add the stopped spell to your Spellbook for free.
- Release: If your concentration on a spell of 1st level or higher would break for any reason, you can use your reaction to release the spell at its current duration using your Vancian Magic feature.
Split Attention
Starting at 14th level, your trained mind can maintain two streams of thought. You gain advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, and losing concentration. Additionally, you can double either the duration or the target count of any spell you cast that has the concentration tag and which doesn't target only yourself.
