Variant Kobolds

Most kobolds are considered puny annoyances and scrawny pests; they are generally seen as a selfish, cruel, and cowardly lot. However, it's a mistake to judge all of a race based on their worst stereotypes.

Variant Kobold Traits

Your Kobold has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity Score increases by 2 and one ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age. Kobolds reach adulthood at age 6 and can live up to 120 years but rarely do so.

Alignment. Kobolds are seen as selfish, with many judging them as evil, but their perceived reliance on the strength of their group makes many assume they trend toward law. In reality the alignment depends on the individual.

Size. Kobolds are anywhere between 1 and 4 feet tall and weigh between 20 and 50 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Superior Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Taunt, Distract, and Annoy. As a bonus action on your turn, you can harass and iratate nearby foes. Until the end of your next turn, your allies gain advantage on attack rolls against enemies within 10 feet of you that can see you. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Pack Tactics. You have advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.

Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic.

Draco-Blood Kobolds

In stark contrast to their underground kin, Draco-Blood Kobolds are much more in tune with their drconic heritage. Often they carry themselves with an air of superiority over other small folk and even taller humanoid and monsters, in the particularly bold. Draco-blooded Kobolds also have greater number of winged urds and spellcasters due to the stronger dragon blood running through their veins.

Draco-Blood Kobold Traits

Your Kobold has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution or Dexterity Score increases by 2 and your Intelligence or Charisma score increases by 1.

Age. Draco-Blooded Kobolds tend to mature more slowly, reaching adulthood at age 10, but can live twice the lifespan of regular kobolds, and in extremely rare cases can live up to 300 years old.

Alignment. Draco-Bloods can be just as selfish and cruel as their normal kin, but are more often not Neutral with a Lawful bent, due to their perceived draconic nobility. Though an individual may lean towards one side or the other due to their upbringing.

Size. Draco-Blood Kobolds tend to be, taller and stouter than the average kobold. Draco-Bloods vary anywhere between 3 to almost 5 feet tall and can weigh between 50 to 120 pounds in some cases. Your size is Small.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Dragon Blood Magic. You have special draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. The spells you learn are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Ancestry

When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Dragon’s Breath Spell (of your chosen damage type) once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. You choose Intelligence or Charisma as your spellcasting ability for these spells. (If your DM allows it, you can also exchange the spells you learn with ones that correspond with your damage type, such as a Gold scale Kobold learning the Fire Bolt Cantrip, 1st level Burning Hands Spell, and 2nd level Scorching Ray spell.)

Pack Tactics. You have advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.
