## Multi-Subclassing Whenever you gain a level in a class that you have already acquired a subclass for, you can choose to train in a different subclass. If you do so, you progress as follows: - You are considered a first level character for the purposes of gaining subclass features when you begin progressing in a new subclass. This may mean that you will have to take several levels in the class, before you gain the new archetype. For example, a level 6 battle master fighter who chooses to advance as a champion for their 7th fighter level, will have to reach level 9 as a fighter before they gain the champion features that would normally be gained at 3rd level. - You select which archetype you progress in whenever you gain a level in the appropriate class, however you may only progress in a single subclass per level. - While progressing in a new subclass, you still gain all of your non-subclass class features based on your overall class level as normal. The number of subclasses a character can have in a single class is limited to two.
##### Jared, The Swashbuckler Assassin Jared is a 9th level assassin rogue. Upon reaching 10th level, Jared decides to expand his talents in fencing and open 1 on 1 combat by choosing to become a swashbuckler. Although he begins his training in this new archetype, his assassin skills do not improve and he is still a level 9 assassin, but is now also a level 1 swashbuckler. After gaining 2 more levels as a swashbuckler, Jared becomes a 12th level rogue (assassin 9, swashbucker 3), and finally gains the 3rd level swashbuckler features. By the time Jared becomes level 20, he chose to polish his skills as an assassin, whithout overly-relying on his fencing. He is now an Assassin Swashbuckler Rogue 20 (17/3). Capable of dealing out extreme punishment as a level 17 assassin before the fight even begins, but also capable of making quick work of his opponent in single combat as a level 3 swashbuckler, should his foe survive the preemptive strike.
## Prerequisites In order to begin learning a new subclass, a character must fulfill all of the following requirements: - The character’s proficiency bonus must be +4 or higher when they first gain a feature from their new subclass. - The character must have taken at least 5 levels in the subclass’s class. Moreover, whenever an additional spell list is presented, and a character would gain the benefits of one, they do so based on the levels they have in that class, but also only within that spell list’s subclass. In other words, a level 10 Cleric with only 6 levels in the Death Domian would only have access to the spells of that domain as if he were a level 6 cleric, not level 10. Aside from expanded spell lists, if any character with multiple subclasses within the same class gains a feature from either of those subclasses, that feature, if it does, would only scale on the character’s levels in a given subclass. For example, a level 15 sorcerer with only 11 levels in the Draconic Bloodline, would have their Draconic Resilience grant them additional hit points as if they were a level 11 sorcerer, rather than 15. ## Multiclassing & Multiple Archetypes Multiclassing in and of itself can become rather chaotic and difficult to keep track of, and when a whole different type of it is added to a campaign... Well, let’s just say that things can get quite stressful, which is why I am choosing to throw in another restriction that a DM may feel free to circumvent. #### Four Specializations The number of classes a single character can possess is restricted to four. Every single subclass after their first one, in any given class, counts toward this limit of four. Once a character‘s total extra subclasses + classes equal four, they can no longer gain more of either.
##### Voll, The Devoted Conquest Sorcerer Voll is a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer 9 who had taken the oaths of conquest and devotion as a paladin. Making him an Oath of Conquest & Devotion Paladin 8 (5/3). Thus, he is a level 17 character. This makes him a 13th level spellcaster with an interesting mix of qualities. He has a single use of his choice of 1 of 4 options for his channel divinity, in addition to the oath spells from either subclass. However, with two oaths as an 8th level paladin, Voll only gains access to the oath spells provided at 3rd level from his Oath of Devotion, and spells granted at 5th level by his Oath of Conquest. Moreover, as a character who has advanced in a total of 2 classes and gained one extra subclass, Voll is either 1 more class or extra subclass away from reaching his Four Specializations limit.
