#### Otherworldly Patron: ## The Gray Portrait There are legends of artists trapped within their own paintings. It's a common story, an artist so obsessed with their work that it becomes their prison. There are also stories of artists who sell their soul to create the perfect piece of art, or artists who reveal a work of art so astounding that it must surely be from the heavens themselves.
Amidst these stories are tales, tales of a fabled work of art known only as the Gray Portrait. Legend has it that the owner must sell their soul to acquire one. Others say that only the greatest artist of an age could produce one, and that even he must work tirelessly to do so. Regardless of the source, the story always says that once you have one, your life shall never end. Creatures will bow as you pass, your skin will never wrinkle, and your time will be one of enchantment and wonder.
However that is only half the story. The tales never speak of the desire beneath. You see, the portrait tempts. It begs, cries, whispers just one more and leads its owner forever downward. For you see, the portrait is desire. It is eternal as a portrait, but forever trapped to wander the moment for that last bit of pleasure. You have gained a Gray Portrait, some way, somehow, and with it you shall be forever tempted. #### Expanded Spell List The Gray Portrait lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you. ##### Gray Portrait Expanded Spells | Spell Level | Spells | |:---:|:-----------:| | 1st | Bane, Command | | 2nd | Calm Emotions, Phantasmal Force | | 3rd | Fast Friends, Incite Greed | | 4th | Confusion, Phantasmal Killer | | 5th | Creation, Dominate Person | #### Gray Portrait Beginning at 1st level, you've gained a gray portrait, a mystical work of art that prolongs your life. The gray portrait is a small or medium object (your choice), has an AC of 15, hit points equal to your warlock level, resistance to all damage and uses your statistics for saving throws. Whenever you take a long rest and your portrait is not destroyed, it regains all its hit points.
If a spell has the sole effect of restoring you to life, such as *revivify*, the caster can cast the spell on your portrait as though it were your body without using material components. When they do so, you step forth from your portrait. However if your portrait is destroyed and you are dead, you can't be revived without the use of the *wish* spell.
As a reaction to taking damage, you can transfer the damage to your portrait instead. When you do so, the portrait takes the damage instead of you. If your portrait is reduced to 0 hit points, it is destroyed. You must spend a long rest repairing the pieces to restore it to full hit points. #### Fragment of Desire Beginning at 6th level, you've learned to capture the desires of others with your magic. Whenever a creature fails a saving throw against a Warlock spell you cast of 1st level or higher, you gain a fragment of desire from them. You can expend a fragment of desire to cast a spell from your Expanded Spell List without expending a spell slot. You must still have a slot of a level high enough to cast it and when you cast this spell, you cast it at the highest level you have a slot for.
You can cast a spell in this way once. Beginning at 14th level, you can cast a spell in this way twice. You regain all expended uses upon completion of a long rest. #### Escape Artist Beginning at 10th level, you've learned to break apart to escape harm. Whenever a creature hits you with a melee weapon attack on your turn, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage to 0 and move up to 30 feet away to a space you can see as your body drifts away in a puff of paper, ink, or other similar materials.
Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest. #### Artisan's Lounge Beginning at 14th level, you've found a place between places to rest your weary form. You know the *mordenkainen's magnificent mansion* spell and can cast it without expending a spell slot. When you do so, you must cast it using a piece of art such as a painting or a scroll. It then crafts a magnificent lounge tailored to your liking. The art used to cast the spell acts as the gateway, looks exactly as it did before casting the spell, and one can only enter the mansion if they speak a command word you decide when you cast the spell.
Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest to use it again. #### Immortal Body Also at 14th level, your body has grown timeless like the fabled tales of gray portrait owners before you. You no longer age, and do not require food or drink, though you must still breath and rest as normal. You do not gain the benefits of this feature if your portrait is destroyed. \pagebreak ## Eldritch Invocations #### Tome of Enticement *Prerequisite: Gray Portrait patron, Pact of the Tome feature*
Your book of shadows contains enchanting text and alluring images that entice anyone else when they read it. If a creature reads your book of shadows of its own volition, you can use your reaction to force them to make a Wisdom saving throw against your Warlock spell save DC. On a failed save, they are charmed. They must spend their action on their turn to continue reading through your book of shadows. This effect ends after 1 hour or when you end it as a bonus action. #### Blade of Scripture *Prerequisite: Gray Portrait patron, Pact of the Blade feature, 5th Level*
You've learned to craft a blade of exquisite paper and use it to shield yourself from harm. Whenever you damage a creature with your pact weapon, you can choose to inscribe their name upon your sword (no action required). A creature who's name is written on your sword must make a Wisdom saving throw against your Warlock Spell Save DC if they target you with a harmful effect. On a failed save, the attack misses. If it's an area of effect such as the *fireball* spell, the effect instead fails completely.
Once you use this invocation, you must complete a short or long rest to use it again. #### New Pact of the Chain Option As a Gray Portrait Warlock with the Pact of the Chain feature, you can summon the following creature as a familiar: ___ > ## Animate Image >*Small construct, unaligned* > ___ > - **Armor Class** 16(natural armor) > - **Hit Points** 22 (5d6 +5) > - **Speed** 30 ft. >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|10 (0)|16 (+3)|12 (+1)|10 (0)|10 (0)|11 (0)| >___ > - **Saving Throws** DEX +5 > - **Skills** Perception +4, Performance +4 > - **Damage Resistances** Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from nonmagical weapons > - **Condition Immunities** Blinded, deafened, exhaustion, poisoned, restrained > - **Senses** Blindsight 30 ft., passive Perception 14 > - **Languages** Understands those known by its master but can't speak > - **Challenge** (200 Xp) > ___ > > **Two Dimensional** The animate image cannot stand on its own, but it can cover any surface without being harmed. The animate image does not occupy a space. > > **On Your Skin.** Any attack that targets and hits the animate image inflicts full damage to the surface or creature that the image is covering, even if the image takes no damage. > > > ### Actions > ***Multiattack.*** The Creature Name makes Number and type of attacks > > ***Papercut.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +5 to hit, reach 0 ft., one target. *Hit:* 5 (1d4 + 3) slashing damage. > > ***Inscribe.*** The image burns a copy of itself onto the surface it is covering. > ##### Credit > Credit to Genuine Believer from the Discord of Many Things for the idea.
