# Mocker ## ## ## *You make it safely down the cliff, stolen dragon egg strapped securely across your chest. A strange tap draws your attention to it. Is it hatching? No. Odd. Later than night, you wake to see the egg isn’t where you left it. You’re sure you left it further away, but it couldn’t have moved. You hear a strange chittering noise in your sleep and you awake to see the egg is gone. You sit up and-* ## ***Arcane Origin.*** The first mockers were magebred by wizards as nest infiltrators. They could lead their masters to the nests of magical creatures and be left there in place of one of the eggs, which the wizards had taken for their study. This gave the wizard time to get well clear of the danger and the blame of the inevitable rampage of the angry mother. Their secondary use was to limit the populations of these monsters by predating upon their young. ## ***Brood Parasite.*** Mockers are monstrosities that use their excellent climbing speed to scurry up cliffsides and along narrow ledges to reach the nests of other creatures. They slip into the nests and use their shapeshifting to appear as one of the eggs. While they are brooded over, they enjoy the shelter and protection of the egg’s mother and actively protect the eggs from vermin and other predators. When the eggs begin to hatch, the mocker will wait until the nest is unguarded and then consume one of the hatchlings. This allows it to take on the hatchling's physical traits and shape and tricks the mother onto assuming she has lost an egg. It continues to enjoy the protection of the mother and is fed alongside the hatchlings. The mocker grows faster than the hatchlings and slowly begins to consume them one by one. At this point, more intelligent creatures will start to suspect something but the mocker’s incredible ability for Deception often means it escapes detection. Eventually, when the mother is away hunting, the Mocker will consume the last hatchling and flee the nest. ## \columnbreak ***Hibernation Cycle.*** At this point most mockers will find an isolated cave and go into hibernation, consuming their own bodies until they are forced once more to slither into the nest of another unsuspecting creature. ## ***Deadly Potential.*** Occasionally, a mocker fleeing the nest will stumble across an opportunity that allows it to consume the living flesh of another creature. These scavengers realise their own suitability as predators and go on to become Renders; ambush predators that slowly grow in size and ability until they are confronted by another apex predator. This usually does not end well for the render, but while they live they can pose a deadly threat to an unsuspecting party. Wiser mockers stick to their tried and tested cycle and live incalculably long lives, save for discovery or accident. ## ***Adaptable Opportunist.*** Mocker’s pick up the traits of the creatures they feed on, which can be chosen or rolled randomly upon the table below. The stat blocks below represent three examples of mocker manifestation, which depends upon the type of creature they impersonate. The fourth and last is and example of a render. ### > ##### A Unique Specimen > According to rumour, and certain tales floating acround the Aechean University, sometimes a render will go unchallenged for so long, imbibing such a devastating array of traits and abilities that it becomes an apex predator itself. Such ferocious creatures, capable of driving off dragons and other creatures of legendary might, might give some clue as to the origins of the m ythical Tarrasque. \pagebreakNum # Adaptable Traits | d6 | Adaptation | |:---:|:---:| | 1 |***Keen Senses.*** The mocker has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on Sight, Smell or Hearing. | | 2 | ***Poison Barb.*** *Melee Weapon Attack*: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage. The target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. | | 3 | ***Constrict.*** *Melee Weapon Attack*: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the mocker can't constrict another target. | | 4 | ***Regeneration.*** The mocker regains hit points(2 for a Type 1, 5 for a Type 2 and 10 for a Type 3 or render) at the start of its turn. If the mocker takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the mocker's next turn. The mocker dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.| | 5 | ***Breath Weapon*** **(Recharge 5-6).** The mocker exhales a blast in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful When this trait is taken, the DM chooses a damage type the breath weapon deals. | | 6 | ***Petrifying Gaze.*** If a creature starts its turn within 30 ft. of the mocker and the two of them can see each other, the mocker can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw(DC 12 for Type 1, DC 14 for Type 2 and DC 16 for Type 3 and Render) if the Mocker isn't incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic. A creature that isn't surprised can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If it does so, it can't see the mocker until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again. If it looks at the mocker in the meantime, it must immediately make the save. | ___ > ## Type 1 Mocker >Small monstrosity (shapechanger), neutral > ___ > - **Armor Class** 14 (natural armour) > - **Hit Points** 30 (4d10 + 6) > - **Speed** 15 ft, 30 ft climb >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|8 (-1)|17 (+3)|14 (+2)|8 (-1)|13 (+1)|18 (+4)| >___ > - **Skills** Deception +6, Stealth +5 > - > - **Senses** Darkvision 60 Ft., passive Perception 11 > - **Challenge** 2 (450XP) > ___ > ***Shapechanger.*** The mocker can use its action to polymorph into an object or creature it has eaten in the past week and back into its true, amorphous form. A mocker can have only one creature swallowed at a time. If the mocker takes 15 damage or more on a single turn from the swallowed creature, the mocker must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the mocker. If the mocker dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.
