Mind Rot

4th-level enchantment

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 60 feet
  • Components: V, S, M (a shriveled worm in a jar)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
  • Classes: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

You attempt to inflict the mind of a creature in range with a progressive deterioration. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw or succumb to a gradual shutdown of its mental faculties.

While affected by this spell, the target must make another Intelligence saving throw at the end of each of its turns. After the initial failed saving throw and every failed saving throw thereafter, the target's Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores each decrease by 2 (to a minimum of 1), and, if you choose, it takes 3d6 psychic damage.

On a successful saving throw, the spell ends on the target. When the spell ends on the target and at the end of each of its turns thereafter, it regains 2 points to its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, up to their original values.

If the target can cast spells and this spell reduces their spellcasting ability to 1, they can no longer cast spells until their spellcasting ability is brought back above 1.

At Higher Levels. If you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the duration increases by 1 minute and the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 4th. If you cast this spell using an 8th or 9th level spell slot and reduce any of the target's ability scores to 1, the target does not recover these scores when the spell ends. Rather, the target's original ability score(s) must be restored using greater restoration, heal, or wish cast at a level equal to or greater than the level of the casting that caused the permanent effect.
